Turn signal lenses breaking
« on: December 25, 2015, 07:19:33 AM »

This will make the third lens that needs to be replaced...  The first one to fail I noticed when washing one day.  Three of the tabs were cracked.... The second was missing in action after a ride a few weeks later and now this one was just like the first...about to fall off and three tabs are cracked.  Trying a little model glue until I can make it by the dealer.   I'm wondering if the plastic is just too brittle..

Is this happening only at 1 housing?  If so maybe it is distorted

Different lights each time.  Down to one original lens....  Hoping the replacements don't have the same issues.

Had the same problem with my bullet turn signals on the '05 SEEG.  After replacing the lenses just to have the replacements also fail with one tab breaking, I gave up and installed them with a thin bead of clear silicone sealer, leaving an open space at the bottom for drainage.  They've been fine ever since, and when I had to replace a bulb a good twist broke the silicone loose.

I've always assumed it was a combination of a poorly manufactured lens and the fit to the housing.  The tabs that broke on mine always seemed to be the same location btw, indicating it was more of a lens problem than a housing problem.  See if you can find a mold number on the lenses that broke, and if you do find a common number for the broken ones, make sure when you buy the next replacement that you don't accept one with that same mold number.

I also installed the CD LED's in the bullet tail lights on my '14 SG Special............after a few months,  one of the lens was missing,  obviously it fell out at some point.   I went to the Dealers Service dept and the guy went in the shop and brought me out two (one as a spare),  he said it was common for them to pop out.  No charge for those lens. :cherry:

If one pops out again,  I'll also do the silicone treatment.

Silicone works, I have had quite of few of them break over the years and like Jerry I always reattached with a thin bead of clear silicone.  Never had one fall off.
