09 mods and warrenty
« on: September 07, 2008, 08:38:47 AM »

I'm sure this has been asked a 1000 times but, what has been some of your expericiece with MOCO's warrenty pertaining to somebody else do some upgrades.  I have a local guy who I feel is 10 times smarter than the service guys at my dealer.  I would like for him to do the power commander and slip on's at 500 miles but don't want MOCO giving me trouble and voiding my warrenty.  Not to mention would rather put amsoil back in the holes when its time for that first change.  My sales guy made it sound like it was mandatory for the 1000 mile check up to bring to harley.  I'm sure this isn't a free service but like I said don't want them to hassle me if I end up having problems with the bike.
Last stupid question.  The air cleaner on my 09 serg I'm assuming is hi flow or do I need to have some work done it also?
Thanks Terry

Terry, you're right, it's been asked many times before but that's OK.  The more this gets repeated the more likely the word gets spread enough to put a stop to the lies from the Harley dealers.  You do not have to take your bike to a Harley dealer for maintenance, and you do not have to use their fluids or filters.  This is all spelled out in Federal law (Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975).  All I would suggest is that you keep detailed receipts from whomever you have do the maintenance, not because it's required but just because it helps eliminate the BS if your dealer tries to jerk you around later.

The same Federal law protects the consumer's rights with regard to use of non-standard parts.  Unless they can prove your non-standard part caused a failure to a standard part, they can't legally void your warranty.  If you worry about such things, or know your dealer is prone to try to play games, just put the stock mufflers back on the bike and remove the PC before you take the bike in for the warranty repair.

Hey All - what about addressing the second half of tdowell65's question, "The air cleaner on my 09 serg I'm assuming is high flow or do I need to have some work done (on) it also?"

I'm wondering about that too.

Yes the A/C on the SERG is a high flow.  Compare it to a new SEUC and you'll see the difference.  Also, the MoCo now sells it as an upgrade for other bikes...

Screamin' Eagle® "Ventilator" Performance Air Cleaner Kit - Chrome

Stylish low-profile exposed element air cleaner kit provides increased airflow to boost the power of your fuel injected engine. The track-inspired exposed element adds a purposeful look to the bike, and the included waterproof rain sock protects the filter during inclement weather. This easy-to-install kit includes low-profile air cleaner cover, high-flow filter element, back plate, Screamin' Eagle® badge, protective rain sock, and all required installation hardware. Street legal when used with stock mufflers. All EFI-equipped models require ECM calibration (priced separately).

 29490-09

Fits '08-later Touring models. Also fits '09 FLHTCUTG models.

OK my 2cents..... Any exhaust or engine mod will void your warranty. Dealers will "take care of you" in most cases if something lets go and goes ka boom in the first 2 years...... because...... just because. They get thing's fixed... do to your loyalty. Other wise "change er back to stock any time issues arise" and cross your fingers! ;)

I wonder , my stock one runs great ( till now , as far as i can see and feel it ) , there is no need of any mod in performance .
But this is my first 110 cui and i am sooo impressed of the power . ( allthough my 96cui Fatboy stage 1 -thundermax autotune was running very very good ) . I´ll wait whether i need to do a mod , but i don`t think so .

My opinion is the CVO 110 motor is lean from the Factory.

Mods needed in my opinion are not many, good free flowing baffels, a cat removal or 96" head pipe and a tuner to richen the fuel mixture.

I put on the Klocks Werks, but I wanted to use the stock round tips, to do that I needed to turn off 1/32 off the stock tips where they slid into the Klock Werks, (they will still fit the stock exhaust if required)  I'll let you know what the dyo says, keep in mine I always go for whats best for long distance cuiserng, I'm not in to beating the other guy to the next stop light.

as an innocent bystander reading your moans and groans about "warranty" issues it seems as if many of the responses that are posted seem to belittle the service departments and dealers as incompetent buffoons. Lets put stuff on on our scooters (which by the way is your right and choice, hey you paid for it) have something go haywire and take all of that stuff off, put it back to normal then take it to the shop, dont tell them what was on it when it took a s**t and get upset when they can't figure it out. It is a machine, it can and will break, but if your goal is to deceive the very guys trying to help you, shame on you sorry about your luck. change the ecm on your benz or porsche fu*k it up and see if it gets warranted. Just because you have the cash to buy a cvo doesnt make you the smartest guy on the planet, if so you would build your own instead of buying it.

Let me say up front: My dealer in Lubbock "Wild West" has been very good to me. But, this has not been the case with all my friends on this forum. Soooo...

If you would like to offer some suggestions, in the proper etiquette, in dealing with a MOCO service depts, that some of my friends are unhappy with..... then do tell..... but this all inclusive attitude that we are "all wrong" just won't fly with me.

Chill Man, we are all friends here !  :drink:
