Y'all are not going to believe this...AND HERE'S THE COLPRIT
« on: October 31, 2009, 11:17:42 PM »

...so, we're on a BEAUTIFUL ride in southeast Texas, going to Chappel Chill just north of Chappel Hill.  We are going about 25 MPH through down-town Chappel Hill (population 23), when I hear something hit the bottom of the bike, then a puncture sound.  We pull over and by the time I get the bike shut off, the rear tire is flat.  We ran over this (yes, it's a crescent wrench)...

Hang up some "Found Crescent Wrench, if lost please contact" signs and whomever calls send them the repair bill, you know there in hooterville someone is searching their pick up bed far and wide for that crescent wrench - probably has rubbed all there hair off by now..............

I would have never believed it.  When I heard it hit the bottom of the bike, then puncture, I knew it wasn't going to be pretty!

Weird incident.  That's for sure.  In a way besides the obvious you're lucky though.  Obviously lucky it wasn't a sudden blow out at high speeds and that you got the bike pulled over without other incident.  Also lucky it went all the way in.  If it's stayed stuck out on more of its handle it might have torn up the rear light harness inside the fender or beat up the fender itself as it went around.

Dang!   I'm glad you had a few moments of warning before the rear went flat.   A lot of times a flat rear will take you down before you get it stopped.

At least you can add to your tool kit now.

would like to see the other end once you pull it out, can't picture how a rounded end can puncture a tire like that unless its sticking straight up. :nixweiss:

It's an Avon tire.  It only had about 1500 miles on it cause the original tire picked up a nail and had to be replaced.  I was skeptical about buying a tire/wheel road hazard policy at the time of bike purchase, but this is the second tire in 8500 miles.  Policy has already paid for itself.
I put 44,000 miles on my last bike and didn't have one tire incident. :nixweiss:

Actually, I can easily figure out how this happened (not because I am a rocket surgeon, but because I used to have all the bad luck).
After the front tire runs over the wrench, it get thrown upwards and the rear tire hits the handle while the wrench is angled to where the head is on the pavement the the handle is stuck between the tire and the pavement, at a 45 degree angle.  The wrench can't bend, so it is forced into the tire.
There should be a couple of hundred analysts around here who have been laid off by NASA and could model this and calculate the probabilities.

Put it on a piece string/rope and hang it over your garage door. It can actually be a new "lucky charm" for you.

Incredible...

Hi Highjagger,
Not a banner, I painted it.  Did the Bar and Sheild with spray paint and the Sreamin' Eagle by brush.  Being a vampire, I have a lot of time on my hands while everyone else is sleeping!  :huepfenjump3: ;) :huepfenjump3:
