ESP question
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:51:44 PM »

This may be a dumb question...but.....I have the ESP with tire and wheel coverage on my SESG. Will they cover ANY tires I put on, or do they need to be the Harley replacement tires that are spec'ed for my bike?  My rear tire is especially noisy on turns when leaning and I am thinking of replacing it over the winter since I am close to the 10,000 mile mark anyway and don't want to do it in the middle of next years riding season.

Mike, I know two guys that have been, after the fact, in positions that illustrate the old "it's all up to the local situation" answer.  One guy had installed his own tires and was told to pound sand by his local dealer because the tires weren't OE.  They wouldn't even initiate a claim on his behalf.  The other had an E3 on the bike and damaged the tire.  The local dealer didn't miss a beat.  Perhaps didn't even think about it.  Just took the tire off, did the paper work, put on an OE tire from the stock and sent him on his way.

The ESP paperwork very likely gives some guidance here.  Call them to see if there is some guideline you can wave in the dealer's face should they get pissy.  It's not something you want to have to fight over on a Saturday afternoon when the real goal is just to get back on the road for home.

Good advice Don...I will give them a call before I order anything.....Don't need any headaches when on the road and in and out of town dealer. Although who knows what the local dealers around here would do either :confused5:

Mike ,
Unlike the manufacturer's warranty, your ESP is a contract, the terms of which govern the parties' rights.  The only way to answer this question is to read the contract.  Most ESP's require the bike be stock and OEM.  In my recent case, (lifters, cams, etc.) the service department faxed in the needed work to the ESP who ok'd the work without sending out an inspector.  You dealer could do this for you but would be sticking it's neck out.  Probably not wise just for a tire.

FYI :

I just learned today that the Extended Service Plan had a rate increase effective September 3rd.

I hope that anyone who wanted one has already made the purchase.

It really is HOW your dealer or mechanic sends in the claim.  My mechanic is authorized to do work, and is working very well with CNA (warranty company that underwrites ESP) on an engine issue I have.  Luckily, my bike is all stock ;)

Going back to the OP question:

Spoke with my dealer GM today.   He said that the wheel and tire plan says that as long as the wheels and tires are the stock sizes, they are covered.  Brand does not matter.  It is an insurance policy, after all.

Straight from my ESP contract.  The form is dated 08/10 and I do not know if it has perhaps changed since then.  Items in 'caps' are in caps on the contract form:

TIRE AND WHEEL COVERAGE
WE will pay for COSTS to repair or replace the original equipment or like replacement tires and/or wheels of YOUR MOTORCYCLE that fail due to contact with a road hazard (pothole or debris on the road surface such as nail, rock or tree limb).

If a dealer balked at honoring the contract simply because you did not have the oem tires I would argue the point directly with the ESP carrier, CNA Insurance whose number is listed on the contract.

Like the previous poster stated I think this language would exclude tires and wheels that were of a different size than oem, but same size different model or manufacturer should be OK the way I read this.
