Keeping oil where it should be when changing.
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:33:29 PM »

Got a great little gadget to keep oil off things. Called Form-a-Funnel from Pig.
http://formafunnel.com/
Can shape into almost any shape and easily cleans after use.

Looks like a great idea.  Let us know how well it works after you change the filter on your Harley; that will be the real test.

Damn, I like the idea.  But just checked eBay and anywhere from $25 to $40?  Really?  For a funnel?  That's worse than a $90 air cleaner....

I couldn't resist that one. Was going to buy one of those Harley ones but haven't heard good things from them. On the dyna the cardboard from a  case of beer always worked well but with the oil cooler and added real estate on the ruse not sure how that would work. This looks promising.

I do not think a soda bottle does what this thing can. Is like asking a 50 y/o to do what a 20 y/o could do. Is all about flexibility  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I use a 99 cent for sale sign...bends easily into a U shape and slides right up under the filter.

Have used them on all kinds of things. Works great on my Avalanche. This one was a gift so I have two of 'em. Works on the '99 Dyna without any oil getting where I don't want it.

I just bought the new one from the moco. I was very pleasantly surprised. It works great, especially when trying to access the filter on these 2011's with the oil cooler and the lowers. The part # is 63794-10. It's definately worth the $20.00

I use a 1/2 gallon plastic milk container cut to make a trough.  It's volume is just enough to hold what comes out of the engine and filter IF you don't dump the filter in it.  Just hold the filter horizontal to get it out.  The commercial troughs are larger and won't fit due to the oil cooler and hoses that are in the way.

Damn, I'm a sucker for that 'Form-a-Funnel' sales video.  Now I want at least one if not more.  Wonder if people would appreciated them as gifts (weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, baby showers, Easter baskets,  etc)?  Wonder if they're cheaper by the case?  Group buy anyone?  Gotta be a hugh margin/ mark-up on 'em if we could just find a source.  Ideas?  spyder

Made my own from a 1/2 gal milk container, sort of in a shape of a trough.  Has enuf capacity for the typical blob of oil that comes out and is the right size to fit under the oil filter and clear the oil cooler hoses, etc.

Man you guys are high tech.

I just punch a hole in the end of the filter down low and drain the oil out before I take it off.

Nah, just make sure you are ready to catch the oil with something when you make the hole, and wipe the end off good before you remove the filter.
I don't usually spill a drop.

Whatever works for ya though.

I've got the HD version...it actually worked well on the one oil change I've done thus far.  It also helps to have the K&N filter with the nut on the end...that makes the whole process easier, IMO.

I use the cover of Hot Bike Bagger magazine... pull the staples, make a U and slide it up under the filter... spin it off and the oil runs down the cover into a cup.  No mess, no fuss.

Pretty much the same here. I get the filter loose to where I can easily turn it by hand and drill the hole at the 12 o'clock postion; then spin counterclockwise to the 6 o'clock once I've got my 'catch' item in place. Then I drill one in the 'new' 12 o'clock postion for a vent. Once it's empty, off it comes. No sweat.

You'd think after buying a $30k+ motorcycle I wouldn't balk at a $25 funnel...but I do.  I pick up these "magic" funnels at J&P Cycles, etc., but just can't take them to the register when I see the price tag.  Mark up has to be 500%.

Guess I'll resign myself tin foil and water bottles...

One would think when the 110" CVO engine was designed and it was decided that an oil cooler was needed that the oil filter would have been relocated.  Without the cooler, pulling the filter is a clean, easy removal - my '96 Heritage with an 80" EVO motor is a piece of cake to replace the filter.

I have always fabed one from cardboard for my harley's. I even made a master pattern thinking I might have a friend bend me one up from sheet metal. But once I saw the HD version I just coughed up the money and bought one. Actually I also bought the primary fill funnels! It looked cool and simple and I am sure I could continue to get by without it but what the hell? I did get them at 20% discount online hd dealer. I think this web site should be called the jones? Seems like I am always keeping up ? LOL

By the way How about that FXR oil filter? Could that be any easier? I miss it!!! That's a hint MOCO!

The primary funnel did not fit well, made it hard to see the level, fell out too easily and was just one more thing to clean. The techs in the shop all had the same opinion.
Just didn't meet expectations.
I got my full purchase price back ( the 20% #).
