Rocker side to side clearence.
« on: December 03, 2015, 08:41:30 PM »

Hey Guy's I am in the process of re dong my rocker assembly. Want to shim up the side to side clearance of the rockers. What is the clearance I should be going for. They range from 8 to 11 thou right now..  And with the clearance that I have is it even worth it? I am using the SE supports and S&S roller rockers. Will also machine set screws to prevent the shafts from hitting the rocker bolts. Trying to make things quiet up there. Thanx for the info.

I would not mess with it.  You don't want shims that thin taking any type of load.  I think you'd eventually find pieces of ship circulating in your oil system, for awhile anyway...    :(

I was just wondering how much diff in noise there would be between .003 and .010  That's why I was asking if its even worth it.  I think .003 is HD's recommended clearance. Right?

I don't believe you'd notice any noise reduction by reducing side clearance from .010 to .003.  I think if you researched this you'll find the rocker arm always rides in one direction and does not oscillate back and forth within the clearance (causing noise).  But if you decide to find out for yourself, I'd suggest first increasing the clearance so any shims would be more substantial in thickness...   :2vrolijk_21:

More trouble than its worth. The rocker lockers are more beneficial.

Without being obvious it does not hurt to check clearances

How would the rocker locker compare to installing set screws. I have them all taken apart and going to take them to the machine shop guy this evening. What do you think is a more true and tested way of doing it. Want it to last for ever. Thanx.

They both work , the rocker lockers are do it yourself.

Perfect, just seems that once you insert the rocker locker they are kind of in there for ever. Are they removable?

They are just bushings that easily press in and out.  Two per support plate.

I drilled mine from the top and used split pins instead of the "rocker lockers" or set screws.
It did reduce the top end noise a small amount. I will now shim the rockers using .040 in. hardened shims.
