ConV Mod - fork air deflectors
« on: July 14, 2010, 04:22:47 PM »

So, even with the fatboy windshield in place you will get wind buffeting at 60+ or more MPH. Wifey's helmet turning in to a plane wing and making her uncomfortable. So... experiment time to eliminate the wind hitting the tank and to the rider.

HD part # 58125-90B... about 70 bucks.

Here's a few shots. I think we will need to continue to experiment with the look. Maybe the larger headlight and or aux lights too?

Take a few minutes and let it sink in..  it does take a minute truly but it works perfect. Wifey hit upper 70's and kept right on hauling butt.

OK, I took the few minutes and I'm still drinking...

All my previous bikes had no fairing at all so I just don't get it. Yes there is wind in your face but that's part of the experience. I did get the CeeBailey +4 and that helped just enough to break up most of the annoying turbulence. I guess I just don't expect the air to be still when riding 70+ mph on a MC.

Don't get me wrong, I would probably love it...I'm just not ready to find out what I'm missing. So leave me and my denial alone already OK?  :freak:

The problem is the wind that is coming from under the tank. Really has nothing to do with the windshield. She has always ridden a bike with a windshield and simply would not like the "wind in my face" ride for long. Since we take long rides she would get tired too quickly just attempting hanging on without a windshield.

This is why we chatted about the fork deflectors and got a set. It eliminated all the updraft air that grabs her helmet and slams her around.

The look on the ConV is different but I think it will be better when I do the headlight mod and maybe the aux lights too.

Mike,

What you don't understand is that The Wizard is OLD, really old.  If you haven't met him, I can tell you he looks a lot like Gandolf, the wizard in Lord of the Rings.  Too much "wind in his face" blows his long white beard up into his face and he can't see where he's going!  And he can't see too well anyway.  What I don't understand is why he started with a  FLSTE and started adding mods to make it more comfortable.  To get the results he's after, he could have started with a Lexus 450 sedan and simply removed the doors, replaced the wheel with ape hangers and he'd be done. ;)

That's a Lexus 460 sedan you dingle berry.

The ConV is the wifey's bike and was from the beginning as she had to sell her beloved "Tinker" Deluxe to get this one. I get to ride it from time to time if I pay homage and have enough points for the week built up and that's only to test a new mod or tweak the tune. I am banned to the Trike or SESG.

What I would like to know is... why are you guys riding a girl's bike.  :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock:

(oh, I'm going to pay for that one. I can feel it in my bones.)

btw, I'm tuning a Purple People Eater today if you feel like dropping by Ron.

I guess I may as well let you in on my little secret . . .

That takes care of the OEM Fairing/Shield buffeting problem.

As soon as the weather started getting warmer, I needed more air. I put the original shield back on with the deflectors I bought to go with my FatBoy Shield, and now I ride comfortably with no more buffeting. Notice my sig file? I've had the deflectors on for some time now.

Actually I didn't put the stock shield on until Saturday..

I just couldn't believe it myself. It's like I riding a stock Street Glide now. I'm getting a nice clean breeze in the face. It's great!!

The only thing I don't like is the look. There is about a 4" gap between the bottom of the mini-fairing and the top of the deflectors. I'm tooling around with the idea of a small piece of plexiglass bolted to the top of the deflector, tinted the same as the dark shield to close the gap.

Pop on the org. shield Wiz, and take her for a spin. LMK what you think..

I"ll speak with wifey when she get's home and get her permission...  I like being fed and having a warm place to sleep.  :2vrolijk_21:

Who knows... she may like it but she will lose her beloved windshield bag.

I've made up my mind that the mini-fairing stays on until mid Sept. When it cools off I'll switch back to the FatBoy Shield

I have a 58278-95 FB Windshield and 58125-90B fork deflectors. They don't fit. I can not figure out how to get them on. The FB windshield brackets hit the deflectors. Are these the same parts that you used? Please help. I'm lost!

Remove the windshield.

Loosen the top windshield hardware bolt on the forks, both sides. Do not take them off just yet.

Loosen the bottom windshield hardware bolt on the forks, both sides. Do not taken off just yet.

Take the left side deflector in hand.
>>The left one is the one with the flat bracket with the three holes facing left and the top of the widest part of the blade of the deflector bend pointing toward you.<<

Take the bottom windshield hardware bolt out. Remove the hardware from the bolt. Put the bolt and washer through the bottom bracket hole. Slide the rest of the windshield hardware onto the bolt.

Screw the bottom windshield bolt with hardware and deflector in the same hole you removed it from. Do not tighten yet.

Repeat for the top bolt hole.

Repeat for the right hand side.

Tighten all windshield hardware bolts now.

Install the windshield as it was before.

The problem is that the deflector hits the windshield mounting brackets. I will try again tomorrow and maybe take some pictures. I don't know what I'm missing?? Thanks Wiz.

It sounds like the deflectors are on the outside of the windshield brackets when everything is installed. Is that correct? I'm going to give another try today and verify everything you said Wiz. Thanks for all the help.

I just got the fork deflectors installed and took it for a test drive. Man, what a difference!!  Those things are assume!!  It's almost like I'm not even moving.  The air moving around my head is nil.  I think they're the best thing I've done so far to the bike.  Highly recommended!!  Too bad they're not pretty.

Wifey said no to putting the stock shield back on and loosing her fatboy windshield. She wants the above now. Sounds like another future mod thread.

When I ran this idea by the wifey she said the bigger headlight looks to manly on this bike  :nixweiss:

Well after all.. I did tell her I was buying it for her so...... I guess the small headlight is here to stay.

The mini-fairing is on to stay as well. At least until the weather begins to cool.

I have a quick question for you guys. Over the summer I have made several trips to the beach with the fat boy ws and like most, have the buffet problems over 60. based on the excellent data provided by you guys, I'll spring for the deflectors. Problem is, when around town (Annapolis) or when I reach the beach, the first think I do is strip the bike back to street version, which is the look I love. I'm worried about unscrewing and reattaching the deflectors over and over, possibly risking the integrity of the mount over time. Any of you guys have any input on this?

Thanks

Mickey

I have a quick question for you guys. Over the summer I have made several trips to the beach with the fat boy ws and like most, have the buffet problems over 60. based on the excellent data provided by you guys, I'll spring for the deflectors. Problem is, when around town (Annapolis) or when I reach the beach, the first think I do is strip the bike back to street version, which is the look I love. I'm worried about unscrewing and reattaching the deflectors over and over, possibly risking the integrity of the mount over time. Any of you guys have any input on this?

Thanks

Mickey
I to have thought about this. It would be nice if we could design a quick release for the deflectors too. Maybe we could slot the holes and figure a lock of some sort. You'd want them tight so the don't blow from the wind and rattle. Any ideas?

This may sound odd but you might try some rare earth magnets. Those suckers really hold and with enough of them no amount of wind will move them. Might be worth testing with some scrap metal to see how it holds.
