What type of boots do you recommend for winter?
« on: October 10, 2013, 04:45:31 PM »

I think I have narrowed it down to one of the following Harley branded boots but still unsure. Only requirements are warm when needed, cool if needed, breathable, & durable.
    Harley heated boots (D98314)
    FXRG-3 (D98304)
    FXRG-5 (D98012)

Many thanks for your feedback

None of the above.  Get yourself a pair of Danner Ft. Lewis 200G Boots and some good wool socks.  Supplement them with heated insoles if need be.  I've had mine for nearly 20 years and used them for everything from hiking to riding to hunting.

That is one nice boot. Thanks for sharing this info.

The FXRG boots are far superior to anyother motorcycle boots out there. The Danners/Ridge/Original Swat are all just sucking hind tit compared to the FXRG. Cost more, but you get what you pay for and I have owned them all over the years.

What makes the FXRG so much better than a Danner in your opinion?

As I said, I've had my Danners for 20 years.  Got T-boned by a texting teenager 2 years ago and did a tumbleweed impression when I hit the ground...You'd never know it looking at my boots.

It depends on how they are taken care of.
Danners are good boots.
Treat them like they are the only thing that protects your feet and they will.
I have a pair of SIDI's that are 16 years old and other than a few scuffs are just as comfortable as new.

Went the other route on riding boots with work type Rocky w/Gore Tex, 700gr insulation and going on 17 seasons with them.  Never had my feet wet, cold or tired riding or walking in them after riding.  Don't make 'em anymore (that model) so don't know what I'll do when they finally do wear out.  Bought a pair of "waterproof" HD boots (don't know the model...timberland was the manufacture for HD) but they resembled assault boots...socks got wet in a light rain in Iowa, washing the bike in Rapid City and stayed wet the entire trip home after our Saturday all day rain.  Needless to say, they were returned for a full refund when I got back.  Shows just because they say waterproof, don't mean they are.  The Rockys have been cross country 8 times, to the Keys and in all day rains many time...never let me down or had wet feet.

Whatever you get, make sure you have a return policy just in case.... :2vrolijk_21:

Yup, other than the scuffs you'd never guess their age.  I'll probably send them back to Danner this spring to get refreshed.  They've earned it.

I've got a pair of the Combat Lites.  They're decent boots, but not nearly as comfortable or as warm as the Danners.

I've worn Cruiserworks Defender boots and the HD FXRG (can't remember the exact model).  Both were waterproof.  The main thing in keeping your feet warm is the choice of sock.  I am a disciple of Bridgedale ski socks.  I wear their Lightweight version almost year round, even with tennis shoes (I never ride with tennis shoes on), and if I need more warmth, I use the Midweight version. They come up over the calf, have good elastic in the places needed, and will not fall down.  They wick the moisture away from your foot, which is the key to your foot staying warm and cozy.  And they last a really, really long time.

Anything made of cotton in cold weather (or warm for that matter) is useless.  Wicking fabrics are the trick to staying both cool and warm.

I have a pair of Linesman boots I bought when I was 19, they are still in great shape.  Wore them to race moto cross.  If I figure right they are now about 47 years old.   :nervous:

I have had a couple pair of Rocky boots for hunting. They were lightweight and waterproof but after awhile the steel shank would crack or break and made them squeak ;D everytime you take a step. Needless to say hard to sneek up on a critter when your boots squeak

Boots...I have a closet full....surprised  :huepfenlol2:

My 2 favorite for winter are Danner's, and Sidi's. Warm, dry feet, they have never let me down. My Danners are about 16 years old, and they don't stink  :bananarock:
The Harley boots I have tried are lacking in good support for my feet. They look pretty, but that's about it.

I've never had these, but I have heard great reports from the guys that ride a lot.  I think I'll try them.  They will custom fit them to your feet.

I've also heard that these are great boots:

I have a pair of HD FXRG Gore-Tex as my "winter booths". Rode 250 miles today. 40F when I started out and the last two hours was pouring rain and 37F, my feet are dry and warm.

I am going to put in the electrically heated insole for the weekend but I wanted to wait till it gets cold.

Rode in the snow yesterday, 32F, and 2.5 hour of wet snow made me feel that I should have put in the insoles earlier  :2vrolijk_21:
