Title: Which is a better ride?
Post by: Grizzly on February 11, 2019, 04:49:24 PM
I believe Mount Evans is higher by just a bit, but I've read lots on this site about Pikes Peak and little about Mount Evans.

So I'm wondering which is a better ride?

I also believe they are both paved all the way to the top.  Please confirm.

Thanks for your advice.

pikes peak is paved to the top... parking at the top was a lill messy when I was there in 14  :2vrolijk_21:

Both paved to the top.  Mt Evans is a little higher.  Pikes Peak road is paved, but for some inexplicable reason, they didn't pave the parking lot at the top.

Line to enter Pikes Peak was about a 45 min wait at mid-morning.   Didn't go to Mt Evans...too windy on the day we planned to go.

Do both of them and let us know what you think. I've been up Mt. Evans in a truck about 6 years ago and that was quite interesting as it was my first trip up something like that ever.

Mt. Evans is the highest road in the world that you don't have to turn around when you get to the top. When I was there in September they were working on the train at the top of Pikes Peak and there was no parking at the top. So I'd check things out before going up.

Done both - Mt. Evans about 5 years ago and Pike's Peak last year.
The road up Mt. Evans is much more technical than is Pike's Peak.  It is more narrow and has more tight turns.  No particular problem just a bit more challenging.

I really prefer Mt. Evans but part of that may be because of when we rode to Mt. Evans.  It was during an early weekday morning and there was very, very little traffic.  Pike's Peak was done mid-afternoon and there was a lot of traffic which definitely reduces the enjoyment of the ride.  Way too many flatlanders were were terrified to go much over 10-15 mph in the curves and several tour buses also contributed to the slow down.  Don't think there are any tour buses on Mt. Evans.

But as suggested do them both if you have time and judge for yourself.  You won't be disappointed with either.   :2vrolijk_21:

Mount Evens.  Just went there last summer on the way to Sturgis.  Nice ride, very scenic.  Left the hotel in Glenwood Springs it was 85 degrees & sunny and at the top it was 38 degrees with some lite snow on the way down.  Paved but very bumpy towards the top before the switch backs due to perma frost, it was like taking the bike on a mini coaster....cool ride, went slow didn't bottom out with a passenger.  Also if there is stopped traffic & no parking towards the top go around there is a spot at the end for bikes.  There is a fee to go up also.

About 1/2 way up Mount Evens

Coasted down hill through the switchbacks for a long time without motor running, no traffic, kind of surreal. Learned that the electronics on the bike don't turn off until you stop for at least 15 seconds.  Haven't done Pikes, maybe this year.  Does anyone have pic of the top of Pike's?
