110 B motor
« on: September 03, 2013, 03:25:13 PM »

I read in spects for Softail Deluxe CVO it has a 110 B motor. Is it the same as the other cvo bikes? If not what is different?
               Thanks Older Guy

Older Guy...if what you're asking is whether or not the 110 installed in the CVO Softails is the same as the one installed in the CVO touring bikes.....the answer is a resounding NO.  As SteveB said; the 'B' designation means it is the counterbalanced Softail engine.  All Softail twin cam motors are counterbalanced....touring bike motors (including CVO) are not, and use the 'A' designation.

Would the power be about the same? I know on the big frame they are rubber mounted. just wondering if they put out more then a 103. will I notice a difference from my streetglide to the softail?

Yes you will notice a difference. Particularly if the B motor is in a Fatboy. You will look cooler and take years off your appearance. I have been told that the A motor bikes are "age appropriate". I think she was just jealous.

I think the 110b makes 5 less hp than 110a

Will riding a Fat Boy make me look as BAD-ASS as Arnold in his prime? I'd buy one in a HEARTBEAT if that were the case!  :2vrolijk_21:

But I don't think so... no bike could EVER make me look bad ass. I'm just a nerd on a SESG...  :-\

There are differences in output, but not all of the difference is due strictly to the engine.  The exhaust system also makes a difference between a Softail and a Touring model.  The B engine has internal balance shafts driven by a chain, and that requires a certain amount of power to run.  Harley also tunes the engines differently.

Don't forget though that even if that B engine has slightly less power, the bike is also lighter in weight.  The relevant thing to your perception of power is the power to weight ratio, not the absolute power numbers.

The first thing you will notice Olderguy is at a red light on the Softail 110B motor, your mirrors will be still as opposed to your old Streetglide vibrating. The bottom line is you will like the seat height, ease of moving it around and the slight power increase of the 110 over your old 103. What you may not like, (and I still can't get used to) is the top end noise of the 110. Good Luck with what ever color you buy!

When comparing the A vs B motors it is obvious that the counter balancing of the B makes it more smooth at idle but I thought that they seemed to vibrate the same or more at higher rpms.? Any others feel that way? I always thought the B motor concept was foolish. Every kid knows a big Harley jumps and bumps at a stop light. :apple: Honders don't. :D

I think the rubber mounted bikes are smoother at highway speeds.

Little more torque at a lower RPM, no vibration at idle, stronger low end.
