Smart Security proximity-sensing technology
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:22:55 AM »

How are the owners of this tecnology getting on with the keyless ignition?
My worry is, if you are 6ft away and with your back turned can someone jump on your bike and ride it away?
Or does the proximity of the keyfob need to be within 3ft before the engine starts?

Well, for the 6 years that I had my 05 Heritage I never locked the ignition at all.  Did not need the fob to be present.  Nobody ever stole the bike even when I wasn't around.  At rare times I did lock the forks.  Now you could do that if you are really concerned about turning your back and someone hopping on and driving off.......probably not going to happen with people around.  The technology is pretty modern.  I still find myself reaching down to turn the ignition but will get with it as time goes by.  I guess they could jump on the bike and ride away If they realize what they have there!  And how to operate it.  They may stand there scratching their heads for 10 minutes wondering how to operate it and in the meantime you will jump on it and ride away!  And he'll be standing there saying, Curses....Foiled again!"     Pork                 don't worry.....be happy!

For years, there was no security system on an Harley-Davidson models other than the biggest toughest padlock you could buy or chains and padlocks, junkyard dogs and guns. All of the FL models that had the ignition switch on the dash were essentially keyless ignition as once you unlocked the switch on the dash, you didn't need a key to start the bike. The FX and XL models required you to put a key in the switch and turn on the ignition to start the bike. So you only need to look back to the not so distant past to see how easy it is to deal with your issue. Buy a disc lock or a padlock that uses a barrel key. Even the biggest Master Lock can be popped open with a can of Freon and a hammer. Lock your bike up with what gives you comfort, pay your insurance premiums and you've done all you can. A determined (professional) thief can steal anything. The most popular current mode of theft is a tow truck with a boom and a sling. The thieves run a sling around the engine/frame, pick up the entire bike with the boom and drive off. Takes about 20 seconds. Very close by they have a big box type truck they load the bikes into with guys who disarm the security and by the time you've got the Coppers looking for the bike, it's out of sight. You cannot stop dishonest wankers from doing what they do, you can only stop the occasional mostly honest bloke maybe with a few pints o bitter in im from being an idiot

A few years back someone tried to brake the steering lock on my fatboy while I was in a shop and I ended up with bent handlebars, (at the time I was touring France). Maybe europe has a few more crooks??

Well, whenever I forget my fob and have to make a mad dash to find it, it seems like it is 8-10 ft and the alarm stops.  Maybe that's the distance?

One other scenario, if you are at a rally and camping with the bike outside you tent, will the bike ignition be on  or can you turn off the remote?

Us in the Uk still have no delivery dates but they maybe march or april......I cant wait any longer!

After lots of chasing from my dealer, I have a build date of this month (Jan) for the UK. Aus (no ashes) got their bikes first due to their summer being earlier.

suppose so as we let us all be disarmed  ;)

Especially the french rallies are well known for this sort of experience  :nixweiss:

What is the range of the proximity Sensor?

varies, experienced 9 to 2 feet depending on radio conditions and interferences.

As far as I can tell the FOB is passive and can't be turned off.  Only thing you can do is test if the fob is far enough away and maybe lock the ignition/forks for added measure.

I used to be worried that the FOB might be in range with the bike in the garage, but you do have to be pretty close.  Get about a bike and a half away and seems to not pickup the signal.
