Cracked Oil Pan?
« on: September 03, 2014, 11:35:31 AM »

So my '11 FTRUSE has been running just fine. Took it in for a 55k service a few weeks ago. Get it home and park it. Following week, I go to the garage and discover a puddle of oil under the center of my bike. I call up the dealer and have them trailer it up to Santa Fe.

Called them yesterday and they tell me that the oil pan has a hairline crack. Wondering just who this could happen when there wasn't any sign of oil leakage until after their service. After the service, I rode it back to Albuquerque all of about 60 miles and don't remember running over a damn thing.

Thoughts?

Smells fishy to me Simon, of course I am jaded due to my dealers poor service record.

if it was a manufacturing defect it may have cracked after enough heat cycles ( expansion / contraction of the metal )

got any pictures of the pan?

Where is this crack actually located?  If it's at one of the drain plugs, I think you know exactly how it happened.  You might also want to take a peek at how the guy who worked on the bike uses the jack on his lift table.

Good questions and suggestions for things to look into with the dealer. Right now, the bike is at the dealer and there is a pan on order being overnighted so that I can get the bike in time for MGV.

I called back to the shop and talked to the owner/manager. He wasn't sure if the crack was around the plug or one of the mounting screws. I expressed my wonderment at how it went from good to leaking post HD service. He agreed to pull a full inspection on the pan once it was removed. I may be able to press them into waving the ESP co-pay of $50.
