I think you are seeing this..

Reason for Revision
This bulletin was revised to update non-U.S. market procedures.

But I interpret that as meaning they are now including non-U.S. market procedures. :nixweiss:

What is the difference between the Dunlop 407 and 408 tire?  Are any of you SERG or SESG using an after market tire and if so what is your experience?

The "Y" profile on the D407 is sunny-side-down on the D408

Had to wait two weeks for "the shortage of replacement 408's" for my cupped 407.  Road it home last night.

According to the Dunlop rep, the reversal of tread pattern is not the only change to the 408's.   Some structural changes also.

Non-USA

No, modified to INCLUDE non-USA - now a one-size-fits-all <market> bulletin.

My SESG hasn't been picked up yet.  In reading the "tech sheets" in OCT issue of American Iron it states the front is a 408 while the rear is a 407-is this correct  :nixweiss:  If so, why two different tread patterns?

 :confused5: :confused5:

The primary reason for different tread patterns on a bike is the need for the front tire to corner and brake and the rear tire to accelerate (per the Dunlop rep).

So, only 407's for the rear and 408's up front  :nixweiss:  OK, I like to think I'm a bright guy but is this something new and exclusive to Dunlop?  My Metzler 880 don't have a reversed tread pattern.  I just may run "slicks" and drag race the thing since it appears I cannot go >700-1100 miles without feeling like I'm riding on speed bumps  :confused5:

Just like the code books I have to deal with on a daily basis.... they taught us always always read the entire thing and look for "exceptions". ;D ;D

FWIW: This issue just chapped my a..!!  It has been going on for YEARS with Dunlop.  They have had this problem on virtually all of their tires.

I had a high performance streetable V-Rod until recently and had to replace the front tires every 5-6k miles for the same reason.

When you brought the issue up with the dealer and the factory they gave you the run around.  Many V-Rod owners gave up and started putting Metzlers on and the problem went away.

I am not looking forward to wrestling with Dunlop and HD on this issue again.  If it occurs for me, I will switch tire brands.

Some of the questions, above, are discussed here:  New SERG Front Tire " Warranty" Replacement.

In case you have not seen this thread.  See reply #14 for the story on the 407 v. 408.  Hope the info helps!

Thanks for the redirect, it was extremely helpful.  I may begin my search for a good touring replacement tire now so once I get "cupped" I'll minimize my down-time.

If I had a bike involved in this I would be just as pizzed as you folks are.  However, some may find they have been put in a trickbag by good ol' H-D when they try to find different brand replacement tires in the correct size and load range.  Some have already had this problem, like the folks with the '07 SERK, and are basically stuck with the Harley/Dunflop crap unless they want to spring for different wheels.  Just thought I'd remind folks that if they are even thinking about maybe changing brands they need to start searching long before they actually need the new tires.  Make sure the tires you are thinking about are correct for the rim size you have, and they also have a load rating at least as high as the stock tires.

Good luck.

Scott,

FWIW  I will be going back to Dunlops for my SERK. I am unimpressed with the Metzler 880 that much. I'm going to try the E3 in front next time. As Jerry said

He is talking directly to those of us with the SERK 3/4. Howie posted something about a D408 replacement. I need to call him about this.
