2300 miles, West TX, NM, AZ
« on: April 12, 2009, 10:49:54 PM »

Back last week from 7 days of beautiful country in New Mexico, Arizona. Problem was we left 2 weeks too soon. It was a very cold and windy 2300 miles. One day a direct cross wind of steady 40 mph with 60 mph gusts. We were riding on the side of the tires. Not fun but committed so no choice but ride. The motel and cold beer felt good that night. The roadking did a great job with exception of damn cruise control would not stay engaged. It was 27 degrees and I really wanted to warm by right hand on the engine heat but the cruise would disengage if a strong gust or bump hit the bike. Saw lots of snow in the mountains and even cool on the Mexican border. All in all, a good trip but will wait until mid or late May next time. Abby stayed home and kept watch on the farm. She was smart. We both will see you in Eureka Springs in May. Will attempt to post a couple of pics.

Huge open pit mine for gold and copper. Pic only shows a small part of the mine.

Some local cactus near Mexico. Almost as many border patrol vehicles as cactus.

Orange rafts on the Salt River. Long way down, had better be paying attention to riding your bike.

One of many huge dishes that scan the airways for signals from space. At least that is what I was told.

I see that you had a Gold Wing traveling with you. I'm curious about how the wing did in the wind, especially the crosswind.

Plasma,
It's pretty country out that way, ain't it?  I always like getting into that area riding.  Those steady winds aren't bad, but the gusts are a royal pain.  I went east out of El Paso years ago and rode half way across Texas on the sides of the tires.  Like you said, the beer was good at night!  I did that trip in July, so I didn't have to worry about being cold!

Gadget, sorry I missed answering your post. I am a Harley man through and through but am very impressed with the Goldwing for highway travel. The bike handled well, has loads of power. I believe that the Honda used almost exactly the same amount of fuel at each stop. Saddle bags and trunk provided easy access to gear. Only trouble is it sounds like a sewing machine instead of a motorcycle. My buddy owns the bike and has made several long trips with us and has never had a problem with the bike. I have never ridden a Goldwing and will stick with my Roadking.
