Ocean to ocean...including Cripple Creek..........
« on: June 09, 2006, 10:16:32 AM »

Tonight AK, Jonga and I will get on a plane for Atlanta, Ga. to the dealership where our bikes are.  We'll meet a number of other members of this site (and hopefully they'll ad to this thread) and we'll head out for Maggie Valley.

We will be going from Maggie Valley to the Biltmore Mansion and then on to Charolette for the night.  Sunday we head to Myrtle Beach.

This thread will be a work in progress for the next two weeks.  I'll add to it when I can and hopefully the other members of this site that we meet and get to ride with will add to it as well.

JCZ,
Enjoy the ride. I wish I could take the time to ride up, but I'll meet you all in California in July.

JC...I'll be coming to Hot'lanta in the AM to meet you guys, and will probably ride North with you for a while, but have to turn west sometime well before Asheville.  Give yourself some time to spend at the Biltmore...it's not something you'll want to rush through.  It will be great meeting you guys no matter how briefly, and to ride with you a while on the start of your journey!!  I'll have a passenger....See you about 9!!

He will definitely be hooked, that's for sure. I can remember ever since the days of "Then Came Bronson" I had always had the desire to go traveling on a scooter. My first long trip was Sturgis, and it was everything I thought it was going to be plus more.

Jon,
It will be all right if you look starry-eyed, and feel like a kid at Christmas, because that is exactly the way your first long distance trip on a scooter should be. Wish you all a safe and memorable ride.

Gonna get plenty of photos Ernie.....that's the thought behind this thread ahead of time......so everybody that hooks up with us will have one thread to post photos.

Whoa!  I thought we agreed they're be NO photos!!!  (Man, Q, you are going to be seriously disappointed!!!)

First, let me say thanks to Andy, JC, Jon, and Heidi for waiting on me!  You were great about it!!  I'm sorry I threw your whole schedule off!  Thanks to TCnBham for acting as backup escort.  Great job and first time on a road trip on the new SEUC.

Unfortunately, the California boys didn't make it to Biltmore due to ME being late!  My oldest son wrecked his girlfriend's car and that threw a wrench in the plans.  I was going to cancel but then we thought I could catch them north.  I thought they were taking "the best route" on the TOTD direction page which is I75-I575-Hwy 5-Hwy 76 to NC60-Spur 60 to 64.  I was already in route waiting at 575.  They left the dealership at 10 AM and I left Marietta, Georgia after 11 AM.  They were traveling interstate and I was traveling two-lane roads across North Georgia.  I stayed 100 miles due west of them most of the day!    JC, Andy, Jon and Heidi were good sports about it!!  I wish you could have seen them all lined up standing out in front of Wendy's on Hwy 19 in Franklin, NC!!!  They are from the west coast, but definitely have the "Southern Hospitality" down-pat!  They were so much fun!  Of course, we compared the two orange bikes!!  They look best, you know!

I had a blast riding with them from Franklin to Maggie Valley.  JC is a great sweep!  Checks on every one, makes sure they don't need gas, etc.  Andy told us the story of how he bought the Pumpkin from someone on this site after being forced to lay his Black & Blue SEEG down during a group ride.  $8,000 worth of damage and ONE dislocated finger!!  It was soooo much fun zipping down the highway with those guys on the V!

Unfortunately, I caused them to be 3+ hours late at the Wheels through Time museum and meeting up with Chip!  However, the owner of the museum and Chip waited on them and still gave them the Cliff Notes tour!  What an amazing museum!  The current display is about women motorcycle riders!!!  Every motorcycle with a motor runs and he has his own burn-out track!  To quote Andy, "This place makes Arlen Ness's look weak!"  I have never seen so many different style motorcycles or OLD motorcycles.  There are a few antique cars on the showroom floor too that will make you jaw drop!  Heidi has a group photo at the museum if she makes it to a PC!

I was going to bail after the Museum, but decided to stick it out!  How could I leave them so soon after they waited and waited and waited????  After an unscheduled stop at the rest stop for a "Group Meeting, " it became obvious that no one told Chip I was a novice rider because he was more than slightly perturbed that I was slowing them down.  (Sorry, Chip!  Only been riding for six months and the Vrod for only ONE month.  I-40 is NOT your typical interstate!  Any interstate that has a 8% downhill grade with runaway truck ramps and seems to be the interstate version of the TOTD has my respect.  Particular after seeing that old guy take that curve too wide and lowside through the curve!  THAT is why I told you I was planning my escape route and wasn't planning to go with you guys to Charlotte!  I knew I would slow you down!  He looked like he'd been riding for quite some time.  Those downhill, right-hand sweeping turns still make me nervous!  After I thought I was going to go outside the lane and hit my brakes almost too hard, I HAD to slow down!)

Then, the ligntning storm from HELL!!!  Chip gave up on us at that point!  JC and Andy were of course the perfect gentlemen and stuck it out with me!  THANK YOU!!!  Andy and I got caught at a light.  We missed the turn to I-85.  JC waited on us and we thought with the modern technology, we'd be there in no time!  Funny thing is GPS is not accurate in a thunderstorm.

Regardless, Chip and Nancy were the perfect hosts!  I'd like to thank them sincerely for their hospitality!  Great people, beautiful home and a lot of fun!!  NICE MUSTANG too!  I forgot to thank Jon for dinner.  Thank you.  Heidi, I saw you snapping away with that digital camera like nobody's business.  Do I get copies?

Here's three things I learned:

1)  Always go with your gut instinct NO MATTER WHAT!  If I had done this, I would have cancelled completely.  Therefore, they would not have been off schedule!!

2)  A novice should NOT ride with a group of seasoned veterans in unfamiliar territory.  Patience wears thin when you're caught in a thunderstorm!

3)  A map and good directions are still superior to a GPS!  JC's GPS was saturated and not working well.  (Does lightning and cloud coverage affect them like it does a satellite dish?)  How he managed to watch the display and traffic in the rain is beyond me!

JC and Andy, it was only about 55 miles from where we stopped for gas to Chip's house.  We missed 485 TWICE and drove completely around the city and back again.  It only took about 45 minutes at 5:00 AM this morning to get from Chip's house back to 321.  485 is not lit either.  Got to do something about that headlight.  Looks good, no light!  Was at home by 10:30 AM.  85 was definitely the fastest route, but still only averaged 65 mph with stops for gas and food.  I still have a long way to go before I can keep up with you guys!!!

Thanks for going easy on me guys!  Now aren't you glad, we didn't try to ride the TOTD and that I turned you down on joining you and Jock for the trip west...

Have fun in Myrtle Beach today and a safe trip up to WV, back down to Chattanooga, and then west!  Stop at Thundercreek HD!  Awesome dealership!

V,

That really paints a picture.  Not to worry, it all comes out in the wash I imagine (or thundrstorm).

It is easy for those of us that have ridden all of our lives or extensively to forget what it was like as the learning curve ramped up.  I rode with a novice on a 350 mile loop a few years back and it was brought to light for me then.

But as you well point out always go with the gut and ride within your own comfort zone, no one can argue with that.

Sounds like they are well on their way now and it will be great to see one and all in Colorado.  Thanks V for the report.   [smiley=worthless.gif]

Yep, a VERY soggy picture by the end the day!  Not what you want to be seen like by people you've just met!!  I told Heidi what to pack, but only carried a jacket because I only expected to spend about 6 hours on the road.

I believe the morning part of the trip was good!  They took I-85 north to I-985 to where it ends, stopped for lunch at the Awful Waffle, and took 19 to Clayton, waited on me there for an hour.  When I called during my next (frequent) gas stop, we decided to proceed to Franklin, NC.  Looked to be the same distance on the map, but was not or me traveling over the mountain and them directly north on highway made a huge difference.  They waited for over an hour there.

Andy's new bike is a hot little pumpkin!  Of course, it looked better with the Vrod parked next to it!  BTW, Jonga was holding his own!  After I passed all of them to signal for gas and began to slow down for the exit, he came whizzing by me like I was standing still WITH his sis on back snapping pictures as they flew by!  I think he'll be a natural long-distance rider.  Steady, consistent, and no real hot-dogging it!  Perfect to follow!  Hyde is a great lady, too!  Very smart, cultured, and interesting.  A person you'd really like to sit and just have a great conversation with for a while!  Perfect quad for the trip!

Andy told me before he went to bed that they were running on only about an hour's sleep and felt like he was beginning to halucinate while riding through the lightning!  That must be a scary feeling!  Tough guys!  I'm sure they're relaxing in the sun, by now!  JC was wanted to go out and hear some live music LAST NIGHT!  So MB watch out!!!!

Hyde, I want to see a pic of Andy's mustache flying in the wind!  AND make sure you get someone to take some pictures of you two on the bike.  You'll be like me and have a million photos of everyone else on the trip and NONE of yourself!  Keep notes in your phone or send text msgs to yourself of important things so you won't forget to write them down.  A scrapbook of this ride will make an excellent birthday or Christmas gift for your brother!

GOOD LUCK guys and gal!

V

OK...unpacked, fed and watered, so now I'll describe the events of Saturday up until we parted from the group and headed back West.  I'll post the remainder of our trip on a separate thread....

Suzanne (aka, Harley Diva) and I left B'ham at 6:00 AM CST because we lose an hour when we cross the Georgia line to EDT.  After one wrong turn, we rolled into the Lithia Springs Harley Davidson Dealership (Atlanta HD) about 9:30 EST and pulled in next to AK's Pumkin!  After wandering around for a couple of minutes tryingto figure out who was who, Heidi (Jon's sister) intoduced herself and pointed the rest of the group out to me and Suzanne.  While Suzanne did a little quick shopping trip (an absoulte necessity, you know), we all met up outside while the group finished packing up.  JC and I looked at the maps and figured out the route he had chosen and loaded into his GPS.  They then volunteerd me to lead the group through Hot'lanta!!!  We rolled out of the dealership about 10:30, gassed up, and hit I-20 East into downtown Atlanta.  After a small traffic delay...they've always got the roads f'd up in Atlanta...the bikes were good and warmed up, so we proceeded towards I-75 North, then to I-85 East.  Having never "led" a group of bikes in my entire life, I was a bit nervous...in fact, I have never been on a "group ride" at all  [smiley=nervous.gif]  In Atlanta, you MUST go with the flow, or get run over, because everybody in cages thinks they are Dale Earnhart Jr...bumper drafting is legal in Georgia  ;D ;D  We were running about 75 MPH in a 55 zone, but were still getting passed on every side by cages.  After hitting I-85 for a few miles, we took I-985 North towards Gainesville GA...I think JC knew where he was at that point, as he pulled up beside me and gave me a nod, and I returned with a  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] We ran up that slab to the first Gainesville exit and pulled into the Waffle House to grab something to eat. Jon and Heidi even ordered GRITS, but I can't attest as to whether they actually ate them! After eating, we hung for a few minutes waiting to hear from Vgirl...turns out she was about 50 miles West of us at that point.  JC had slept a total of about 30 minutes in the plane, and AK not much more. Not sure about Jon...and Heidi had flown in from Boston, but spent the night, so she got some sleep.  We then rolled out of the Waffle House and continued to the end of I-985 which then turns into Hwy 23 towards Clayton, Ga, and Franklin.  It was a nice ride...the weather was warm and humid, but blue skies, with a few puffy white clouds at that point.  We stopped in Clayton to gas up at the first Chevron we came to, then pulled the bikes out to try and find out where the He!! Vgirl was!!  We all needed some Gatorade by that point, so while waiting to hear from V, we sat around and talked about the bikes and the humidity.   ;D :o  After hearing from V, JC, AK, Jon, and Heidi decided to head on up the road towards Franklin and try and meet up with V on the way to Maggie Valley.  Suzanne and I headed West on Hwy 76, after saying our goodbyes to the rest of the group.

What a great bunch of guys and girls!!  We'll have to make it out to the West Coast and ride with them all again, doing the reverse of what they're doing on this trip.  You've already read about what the rest of their day was like...on so little sleep, I'm happy to hear everybody arrived in Charlotte safe and sound, though a bit soggy. My ride will continue on another post.

Here's a few pics...sorry, but no posed photos, just candid shots...

Heidi was kind enough to shoot this just prior to them heading out for MV...Suzanne asked "Does this picture make my arms look big?"  Now, how does a man answer a question like that?  "No baby, it's the angle of the camera"....Good answer!!!!

That's all folks!!!!  Great group, great ride, and some fine company!!  Look forward to seeing them again!!   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif] [smiley=drink.gif]

What a fun day with the Ocean to Ocean folks.  We did not feel like strangers, and I am really looking forward to heading West to California to ride in their part of the country.  8-)   As a matter of fact, I really wish TC and I could have joined them Ocean to Ocean.

I really enjoyed visiting with Heidi.   :)  All of the guys were different characters, and I enjoyed hearing their stories.  JC, I don't want to hear of any more AFLAC claims!!!!!   ;D    :o   BE SAFE!

The whole experience was great as it was my first time on a ride over 50 miles.  Even riding in my comfortable "throne" rocking to the tunes, TC almost wore my a$$ out!  The hardest thing about having such a kick a$$ stereo is that I have a hard time sitting still...want to dance...TC does not allow that kind of movement while he's driving!   ;D

When we got to Chattanooga it was SO good to get a hot shower, and of course I had to put on my latest HD purchase to go drink a couple of brewskies!   [smiley=drink.gif]   [smiley=drink.gif]    It was the end of a perfect day.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Yea, you don't want to get too far off the beaten path or somebody might make you "squeal like a pig"  ;D ;D

I think AK was glazed over at that point, and wondering "what's next"...he's a super guy, and I'm proud to have met him.  The whole group reacted like we had known them forever!!  Couldn't ask for better company!  Hope to see them again soon.  Having never been in this part of the country, and seeing how beautiful it is, hopefully they won't be strangers.  I think AK is considering MV...hope so.  Wish them the best for the remainder of their trip!!

Just spoke w/the "Cali" crew, and they are in Statesville N.C. awaiting Hubbard's arrival. Planning on visiting Tilley's H-D before heading back to Asheville N.C. Weather is not cooperating today (raining) so they will spend more time doing indoor sightseeing then riding. They are having a wonderful time on their adventure meeting members, and seeing all the sites.

Unfortunately they didn't get a little further north so I could have met them and shared some of the area around here w/them. Oh well, that will have to be on the next "excursion", better still this gives me a reason to do like they did in reverse. Ship my bike to west coast and ride back east.  [smiley=idea2.gif]

Appropriate since it was Soggy Valley last year!

Prepare now for the 2007 Calgary CVO Stampede!  We are seriously thinking of shipping our bike to California at least a week early, ride up the coast western coast of Cali, Ore and Wash into Vancouver then over to Calgary.  Then ride home from there.

I believe they mentioned being in Chattanooga tomorrow to meet w/Jock to start the trek west. With the present forecast of the T.S. they should be riding away from rain (at least the T.S).

That's the plan as I understood it...ride into Chattanooga on Tuesday, so hopefully they will be riding away from the rain and more importantly, the TS.  Hope the weather cooperates with them and they can ride back through the Smokies area on the way.  Then on to Memphis.

Hmmm, I don't like that 72 hour forecast. I go back to work at FD on Thursday, and that path could effect us. :( That's all I need is high winds and torrential rains to have us running like crazy.

True dat!!! We took the job didn't we. ;D

Bro-N-Law is doing well. I figured he would have stopped off at your station during lunchtime to check on you by now. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I'm sure he will see you during the cook-off in between sets while he's playing w/the band. What are the date, time and location of that event again? Might have to see if I can get a group to ride up and get some grub if I'm off.

You're battin' a Thousand on that one there, Fatboy!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Got a call last night from a certain person in NC, that the plans had changed, and everything would be delayed until Tuesday, because of the freakin' rain! :(  Then at 5:50 a.m. this morning, I get a call that the plan is back to today!  :-? Anyway, OTIS and I arrived in Statesville, in the Denali of course, around 9:00 a.m., only to find JC, ak, jonga, and Heide, (Official Photographer), in the parking lot of the Waffle House.  That's another story! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  Anyway, after breakfast, we went over to Tilley's, and introduced them to Don Tilley and his Team, and just had a blast!  We talked about our life lessons, and found we all have a lot in common.  We all agreed we were ALL lucky to still be here!  I haven't had so much fun sittin' around bull chittin' and laughin', in a long, long time! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]  They were heading West to meet up with Jock, and OTIS and I headed back North to the Mountain State.  Sure have made some Friends on this Site!  Thank you, Your Honor!  Later--HUBBARD

It's all four of us......sitting in the living quarters of the people that own this motel in Maggie Valley......letting us use their computer.  We're in a place called the Chalet and we got a two bedroom, two bath suite with kitchen, living room, etc. with a very nice balcony with a view.

Great upadates by Vgirl, TC and Hubbard! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  V you were doing fine for a novice and I've got to say that I was impressed with your perserverence even after the misunderstanding on location, early on.  Then when it started the thunder and lightening and coming down in buckets, I was sure that you were going to be diving for cover at the next off ramp that had a motel.  Nope, she's a trooper........she just kept on keepin on.......no snivelin or nothing.  Look all the way through those turns girl and you'll be fine.

The hospitality in Charlotte was exceptional and Chip and Nancy rolled out the red carpet treatment.  We were scheduled to go up to West Va. to Hubbard and Otis' place today but when we called last night, Hubbard informed us that it was supposed to rain all day today.  We rode up to Statesville and they drove down.  From there, we headed here to Maggie Valley.  Very, very tired but we should finally get a full nights sleep tonight! [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Tomorrow morning Jock and several others are going to hook up with us here in Maggie Valley and we're going to do the Tail of The Dragon.  I'm very tired and I know I'm forgetting a hell of a lot that I'd like to say but let me just say that we've met some really great people and we haven't quit laughing for the past three days the crown was with Hubbard and Otis today.......we were laughing so damn hard my stomach hurts.  I'm really sorry that our plans got screwed up and we weren't able to spend more time with those two.

Terry, it was great meeting you and your wife and we appreciate you helping us get out of Atlanta.  The bike is broke in now.......enjoy it.

We should be hooking up with JR and the other Memphis crew by Friday (maybe Thurs. evening).  Our plans change about twenty times a day so there's no tellin.....but that's what's so great about a V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

JCZ, Jonga, AK and Heidi, it sounds like you have a really nice set-up at Maggie Valley.  I'm glad to hear y'all are having a great time.

TC and I really enjoyed meeting and visiting with y'all Saturday.  We're sorry we scared you zipping through Atlanta!   :P   Unfortunately you have to keep up with the pace or you'll get run over in HotLanta traffic.[smiley=nervous.gif]

We're already talking about heading West.  The 2007 rally sounds awesome, [smiley=drink.gif] but hopefully we can visit you guys before then.   [smiley=banana.gif]

Be safe.

Happy Trails, until we meet again.    :)

Vgirl was kind enough to bring her lap top over to us here in Chattanooga tonight.

We're having a great time.  Spent the day visiting all the civil wars battlegrounds, Ruby Falls, Rock City, etc. all day.  We're not missing much.

Of course we've met some great people and have saw some old friends, too.  Tomorrow is the tour through the Jack Daniels Distillery and on to Memphis.  Got company......gotta go!

I tried to tell them to go to the George Dickel distillery too!  One distillery is huge and very commercialized.  The other is small and laid back.  One is bourbon, one is sour mash whiskey.  Both are in the same area and within a few miles of each other!

JCZ, AK, Jonga, Hyde, and Jock were a lot of fun!  Hyde leaves to go back home to Boston tomorrow.  I believe she has had the time of her life!!  She is by far the most adventurous gal I've ever met!!!  Hubbard was right!  She was definitely the designated photographer on the trip!  Some 500+ photos in less than a week!!!  When JC and Andy gets home, you guys should see some terrific shots of the Southeast.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The line-up now is one pumpkin [smiley=pumpkin.gif], two black 8-) and blues [smiley=nervous.gif] (Is that a blackberry or a blueberry?  ), and a customized Street Glide [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]!  After sitting on JC's SEEG, I think I might have found my next bike (for long trips)!!!   Hub is right!  90 miles an hour with no fairing beats you up, even with a detachable windshield!!!

Now I wish I was going to Cripple Creek!!  Put me down for next year!!

JC and the group...glad ya'll had a good time in 'Nooga...it's a nice town.  Hope you had time to try out a few of the local brews, and it sounds like you have taken in a lot of the sights.  Also hope you guys got to do The Dragon on the way, or at least part of Western NC/Tenn.  Ya'll ride safe, and enjoy Memphis and the Blues!!   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  Wish I was still with you!!!!

Calgary sounds good to me!!!   ;D [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]  I've been to the Canadian Rockies via Calgary twice...it is the most beautiful place I've ever seen...bar none.  There's 250+ miles of road from there to Jasper that will absolutely take your breath away every time you look up, or round the next turn.  You can drop a camera and take a good picture there.  ;) To go from California, up the coast into Vancover, then over to Calgary would probably be the most awesome trip anyone could ever hope to do.  Shipping to Calif. then riding to Calgary, then back home...that sounds like something I MUST do!!! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

V...they got a  [smiley=banana.gif] at the local Dealer here in B'ham.  A person can't ever have too many bikes, you know...it's like golf or fishing...you can't expect a person to do either of those things with just one club or one rod/reel...same thing with riding...you need one for hot rodding/bar hopping/ short cruises, then another for all of the above, plus long distances.  ;D ;D You'd be lookin' good sitting on that yellow SEEG!!   [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Talk about ironic!  I was going to get the phone as it stopped ringing!  It was the Coast-to-Coast gang!  JC, Andy, Jon, and Jock are standing under an awning outside West Plains, Missouri trying to stay dry.  Since we "bonded" so well in the rain, they thought it'd be funny to call and see if I'd like to take a ride!  HA HA LOL!   [smiley=ROFLOL.gif]  NOT!!!

They have traveled all two-lane roads since leaving Chattanooga.  They went to the Jack Daniels distillery on the way through to Memphis.  JC said, "JR really took care of us over the last couple days!  If you make a post, please extend our gratitude to JR and his wife.  The $1.98 tour of Memphis was great and they took excellent care of us!"   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

They are heading out now since there is a break in the rain.

I'm sure JR will post a detailed ride report later.

Rjob and the rest of the members going to Cripple Creek, I hope you have a safe and fun ride, a a great rally!!  The more I hear about it, the more I wish I had made the decision to attend!   :'(I can't wait to hear all the stories and see all the photos afterwards of Cripple Creek!  You guys can always make the trip to Maggie Valley!!!  Isn't it the weekend before Myrtle Beach and only a week before Biketoberfest?  For an experienced rider, it'd be a short or small detour!  We won't discuss how long it will take a novice....  I'm sure JC will fill you in on that later!

I heard from JC, AK, Jonga, & Jock this Morning. They are having a great time on the ride. They had just crossed into Missouri and were taking shelter from a rain storm.

Well this is JR and I'm sorry for a late report on my report for the gangs visit thru Memphis. I want to start by saying what a joy and privilege it was to finally meet Y'all after a long time of corresponding on this wonderful site. We know each other thru this site but when you see each other and talk it goes a lot deeper. My wife Debbie and I truly enjoyed the little time we got to spend together and want to thank you for stopping by and being a part of our life for the last couple days.

I was keeping in contact with JC and it worked out fine on the timing of their arrival. I got a call from JC when they were in Sommerville TN and was able to meet them on HWY 64 and bring them in. After a short greeting and meeting Jon (Jonga) for the first time we headed to a hotel up the road to get that situated. JC needed to get his pictures downloaded to a CD as he filled up his chip already. It was a great opportunity to show him one of our famous sites in Memphis besides Walmart.....It is Walgreens! ;D

As we lined up our bikes it made for a nice photo op. So here are the bikes lined up.

Next stop was the hotel where they met a sweet reception from a sweet lady missing a few teeth at the super eight hotel. :-* After getting checked in I took them to my house via a nice winding road I call my Maggie Valley since we have no mountains in Memphis. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]. When we got to my house I introduced them to my wife Debbie and while she was getting dinner ready we headed down to the square in Collierville for Sunset on the Square. It goes on every Thursday thru the summer. A great gathering and a Live band. We had a good time here and then headed to the house for dinner.

Here is a couple shots on the square. Left to right, Andy (AK), J.C. (JCZ), Jon(Jonga), and Jack(Jock).

For a minute I was thrown for a loop seeing the extra B&B, but then remembered that Jock had joined up w/the "Cali Crew" on the trek back west. Looks like you had another great time meeting and sharing your neck of the woods w/the members here. Can't wait to see some more pictures.

Quickie set-rep.  While having dinner with Arcticdude just a bit earlier this evening JC called.  The troop has made it to Joplin, MO and is stopped for the night.  Sounded like a case of drowned rat syndrome had set in as the weather here hadn't been dry for a few hours.

They have arrived this far though.  They'll even get to sleep in in the morning and recover a bit as its a lunch departure from Joplin tomorrow.  The group will hit Dodge City tomorrow evening after having collected one or two more in route.  Dodge City should see us collect 3-5 more.  So the trip from Dodge to Cripple Creek should be even more fun.

I'm back, sorry about that!

Over dinner we had a good time talking about their ride so far, also talked about our families while JC was able to use my computer to check out this site. They were pooped so I was going to escort them back to their hotel then Jon (Jonga) tells me he has a screw loose. Well, I just met Jon and thought he was fine to me then I realized he was talking about the screw on his shifter! ;D I got him the allen wrench he needed and JC supervised to be sure he got it tight enough. They were able to do some laundry here and by the time they got Jon's shifter tight Debbie had their clothes folded and ready to go. In the morning I will meet JC and bring him to my dealer for a new rear tire which was only a few miles from where they were staying.

I was able to get off work Friday and show the guys around. I called JC and he met me at the exit and we went to Bumpus for a new tire. I introduced him to the folks there and they got right on his tire. There was a problem getting JC a tire as they were out of stock but located one at another dealer about 30 minutes away. They offered to take us some where for breakfast while we waited but JC and I walked down to a store and got a drink and doughnut there. When we got back we found out the tire they got was the wrong one and had to go back for the right one. By then Andy, Jock and Jon showed up and I asked the service manager if there is any way we could rent a scooter as time was burning up and I wanted to show them the town. Well, they ended up giving JC a scooter free of charge while they work on his scooter! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

We stopped at an Office Max and JC picked up another memory disc for his camera and I realized I forgot my camera at the house. So I'm sorry I don't have pictures of our day around Memphis. >:( I realized I need to update my camera after seeing JC's camera. We stopped and ate breakfast/lunch at Crackerbarrel then went down town.

Took them down to Harbor town and they got some nice pictures on the Mississippi and then stopped at the welcome center to take some pictures of BB King and Elvis statues. It was getting hot as it ended up getting to 101 degrees. After cooling off in the aircondition and some gaterade we swept thru downtown and went to Elvis home (Graceland).

There was an hour wait so they went in line and I went home and would meet up with them tonight to go do Beale street. Usually on Wed. nights they have bikes on Beale where you can park your bikes right on Beale and walk around. We were told they do it on weekends too so after thy got cleaned up we would meet and do Beale.

We had a rain shower move thru as they went downtown but cleared up nicely for the rest of evening. Debbie and I met them across from BB kings place and we ate dinner at Memphis Blues City Cafe. It was happening on Beale as there was a big fight weekend here and they had a prefight on Beale to go along with all the music. We enjoyed the night together and said our goodbyes as they were looking at rain in there forcast for Saturdays departure. I did snap this picture in front of BB King's place on Beale.

JC, Andy, Jon, and Jock, thanks for stopping in Memphis. Debbie and I enjoyed your company and welcome Y'all anytime in the future. May God Bless you and your families as you continue you trip! God's Love to you all! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I'd love to ship and ride, but I think I'd have to buy a Black & Blue before then!

You will! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

We're waking up in Joplin, Mo. this morning, to clear skys.

Rain off and on all day yesterday.  At some point my bike through a code.  Had it looked at in Memphis when they changed my rear tire (by the way.....JR hustled a a free loaner for the day) and they said it was a "combustion code" but couldn't find anything.  They cleared the code and sent me on my way.

Stopped at Denny's Harley Davidson in Springfield, Mo. half an hour before closing time.  Explained that I was on the road and what was going on and his response was "we're getting ready to close but I think we can do something to help you".  Hour and a half later (yep, he kept two guys back on overtime to take care of it) they had replaced a broken wire to my air intake sensor and also the ground for that.  The first one, the rubber sleeve was worn through and it was shorting out.......the ground was broken on the inside but the rubber sleeve was intact.  I can tell you that my bike really started sucking the fuel to the tune of 136 miles on the last tank.  From Sprigfield to here in Joplin it looks like no codes are thrown and my fuel guage quit moving so fast.

These guys are planning on leaving Joplin at 12:30 this afternoon.  Not sure why so late but we're going to pull earlier and have a nice comfortable ride and try to beat some of the heat of the afternoon.  We should be there in Dodge City early enough that you'll find us at a motel laying by the pool. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  That's our idea of a V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

The departure was set that late because it allowed travellers headed this way time to get here this morning and not have to push it as far the evening before should weather, schedule or travel Gods make such things a palatable choice.  Since it still allowed plenty of time to get in well before dark it had been suggested as a way to be accommodating.

Thanks Don.  We rode in the rain last night to get an early start today.......we seem to handle the rain a whole lot easier then the heat.

We're at the Comfort Inn in Dodge City (the Thuderbird didn't have a pool).  Going to go swimming with the guys then we'll head off to dinner in awhile.

Thanks JR, to you and Debbie for the hospitality and showing us around!  We had a great time [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]   Tell Debbie that I said thank you for that special dinner.......homemade meals are really appreciated on the road.

Been home for a couple hours.  Clocked 4,901.6 miles on my bike since we picked them up at HD of Atlanta.  We had a great time and met a lot of great people from this site.  I think Jon (Jonga) bought five shirts at each Harley dealership that we stopped at. [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I'll start working on the photos tomorrow and post here.
We did two lane highways and roads all the way across America.  I doubt we have a total of 200 miles on interstate freeways, all combined..........so we got to really see the country.  Thanks to all the members of this site who showed us around their respective areas....that was much appreciated.

Canada, next year.........start planning it now.  You and Randy can ship your bikes out here and ride up with us, from here, then ride them home (two weeks is do-able).

Just found our photos from when Chip and Nancy took us to the Tail Of The Dragon.  Beginning with photo #935 of 1357, through #944 of 1357....first it's Andy on the orange and black, me on the blue and black, Jock on his blue and black and Jon and Heidi on his black Street Glide......... http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/OrderPage.aspx?pi=04RK006W080938&po=939&c=

Glad to hear you all made it home safely and had a great time getting there.  With 1000+ photos, I'm sure you'll be busy for a while!  Make sure you send me some pics!!!

I enjoyed meeting you guys and Heidi.

Out of curiosity, how many attendees at the Cripple Creek CVO Rally plan to attend the Maggie Valley CVO Rally?

JC, Jonga, & AK,
Glad you all made it back home safe and sound, sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you while you were on the east coast. :( However I've decided to go to Maggie Valley after seeing how much fun can be had at one of these gatherings. Ya'll need to come on back. ;D

Why not upload them to your gallery?  Kick off the job and go do other things for an hour or 2...

Ah grasshopper.....you must be patient.

If you know a way of mass upload to the gallery from my Kodak Easyshare program, let me know.  I believe I have to save them to my hardrive first, then I can upload five or so at a time.......is that right?

Andy, thanks again for the shirt from "The Truth!"

Yeah, 'er 'uh, Vgirl,
What's up with no pics of you?  You on the Wall in the Post Ofiice, or somethin'?  Or do you work for the "Company", and can't be photographed?  Got my curiosity up, now.  Where's some Pics of you on that V-Rod?  From your earlier Posts, I know you're an intelligent, self-made Lady, that paddles your own Boat, but why so reluctant to have your Picture posted?  Hey, it's your business, and certainly none of mine, so please don't take offense.  Just curious, that's all.  Later--HUBBARD

Reviewing this thread in preperation for a cross country trip that Terrie and I are planning for 2010.  This trip was two and a half years ago and it's really great to be able to go back through not only the photos but the comments that were posted.  It's great to reminisce and I love this site for providing the opportunity! :2vrolijk_21:

where on the east coast?

I've been deciding for the past few years so I'm leaving it up to Terrie.  She's mentioned several areas......the Missippi Delta area (home of the blues), Chicago (where Buddy Guy's Legends is at) and New York City (I'm just not sure what she wants to see there or what she thinks she wants to see there).  Wherever, she'll decide, then I'll try to put it together.  Two weeks on this kind of trip doesn't allow for a lot. :nixweiss:

I'd like to see the northeast but two weeks certainly isn't going to allow us to do it all.

Yea, I think I mentioned you and Binx in some of that conversation......  She said "well Howie and Binx can show us around New York" and I replied "oh.....you think you'll be able to keep up with Howie...........in New York City?"   :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

We just don't know, she's still thinking about where she'd like to go, what she'd like to do.  Personally, I'd like to do the northeast in the fall when all the leaves are turning colors.  When does all that happen.....and where, specifically?

Leaves change in late September through mid October, JC.  Anywhere north of New York City (upstate) or Connecticut will be beautiful.  Maybe ride up the Hudson River valley...

We come down that way, I'll be all over that b-b-q.  Terrie doesn't care for it but she'd get her fill in the morning.....pancakes.

Yep JR......those pictures brought back some memories.  We rented a car and drove from Atlanta to Chattanooga to Memphis.  I remember when we left Chattanooga early in the morning and we got out there some place and the temp. reading in the car said that it was (-) minus something and I thought to myself "oh that must be broke, that can't be right".  It was mighty cold!

We have been trying to do the fall foilage ride in the North East for a few years, and something always seems to get in the way.

Came home from work tonight......Terrie told me that she wants to go to Chicago to Buddy Guy's Legends then ride Route 66 all the way home.  Looks like that's what it'll be.

I saw Buddy Guy in Paducah Ky with my eldest son. It was so crowded I waited until Buddy came out in the crowd playing his wireless guitar, and everyone stood up, before trying to get out to go to the bathroom. While in there standing in front of a urinal doing my business Buddy walks in still playing that guitar. I did a double take and he just grinned. I gave him a high five and walked out.

We probably did, I don't remember.  I've been on different parts of it several times and when you get my age......they all just start running together.  I do remember that we were on the yellow brick road, thow. :nixweiss:

Great times Jock......look forward to riding with you again in May.  We'll have rode together in Florida and California and many states in between.......... it's all good! :2vrolijk_21:
