Visit to my fathers, MV GTG, Albuquerque, Colorado
« on: September 18, 2011, 10:57:02 PM »

Heading out to see my father in Arkansas. Left Fremont, CA on Sat at 8:00am, arrived in Flagstaff, AZ at 8:00pm got a room and slept for 4 hours then hit the road at 3:00am. Arrived in Gallup, NM at 6:15am which happened to be exactly 1000 miles. 22 hours and 15 minutes. Hit 1500 miles about 3:00pm today, around Amarillo, TX. Wanted to try for 2000 which would be between 10:00pm and midnight, but that would mean continuing driving 75 - 80 mph in a forecasted thunderstorm. Since I could see the thunderheads in the distance I chose to stay in Elk City, OK.

I purchased an IPad 2 for the motorcycle since my Laptop takes up almost one saddlebag. Haven't tried loading pics yet. Some Cali, New Mexico and TX pics. Very few AZ pics since I went through in the dark.

There was a lot of sand in the Vaseline at Flagstaff last night in regards to motel pricing. Willie Nelson was in town so they were jacking up the rates $15 and more from the Internet prices. Carole booked me online for $59. Ramada wanted $139 for their only room left??? which was handicapped. There were lots of parking spaces for a full motel.

He should be at his dad's today.  He'll get some rest before pushing on. :2vrolijk_21:   My brother in law said it rained several inches in Joplin.....remember that place Andy?  He'll be laid up there, if it's raining like it was when we were there. :2vrolijk_21:

Left Elk City at 8:00 am Local time and arrived at 3:15 in central Arkansas. Missed the rain. Last night rain was hard so wimping out, I mean missing out on a rain experience, wasn't so bad.

My shoulder/neck muscles and ass were really burning. Almost forced to use cruise control. It's hard to follow a speeding rabbit using cruise but the wrist and shoulders start burning using the throttle so I just set the cruise to 5 mph over the posted and relax. Extending your elbow out to the side and touching the back of your head then back down below your butt, 2 sets of 30 seems to help with the shoulder/neck. Sitting on your knees on the seat helps with the ass. Or just lifting up every 15 minutes.

The bike runs great.

The temps have been perfect. Cooler than I expected.

Still figuring out the IPad 2. Can't figure out how to scroll or cursor back and forth within the text.

Will need to try loading pics. May not be exciting but will depict the ride.

Bought 93 octane fuel from Shell around Lake Dardanelle, AR, and the color of the fuel was Yellow. Never saw yellow fuel before.

I've been so lucky on missing the rain. The temps have been moderate in range. Lots of fog in the mornings at the higher elevations. The Blueridge Parkway is gorgeous, curvy and these guys and ladies ride them with lots of enthusiasm.

Everybody is having a good time.

Just left Maggie Valley and am on my way there. Colorado, Utah then home to California.

Great pics, looking forward to it. Interesting about the number of tourists in the area. Guess I'll have to learn to plan for accommodations.

Left Evans, GA at 8:00 am arrived at brand spanking New Orleans at 6:30 pm. Boy is it hot and humid here. Goin for my shorts and sandals.

Made a cutover to Florida state line and who knows how frigging far past before an exit to turn around. Bad planning took me an hour and my camera wouldn't shoot the border sign.

Taking pics but can't post them because IPad is a piece of chit! Can't figure out any advantage to an IPad over laptop. I could have gotten a laptop this size. The Apple Rep said the IPad was excellent with photos. If I wanted people to see photos on a local device I'd load them onto my frigging phone.

Found some software for $30.00 that allows you to download to your iPod, iPhone, itoilet, iou's, ietc, ietc, ietc, but is very slow and time consuming.

I apologize for no pics. Maybe I'll find a small Costco PC and begin a new nightmare?

Don great to meet you in MV. The Ipad is simple you simply plug in the camera card reader in bottom and the Ipad will load them for you. Once in Iphoto on the Ipad you can post or email them. Find a BestBuy or Apple store and all will be well. Hang in there with it.

I have had the camera download kit and have hundreds downloaded onto the IPad2. I also figured out how to Email a photo.

A recommendation was to use Flickr but this Yahoo product requires Adobe utilities that the IPad doesn't have.

Still can't figure out how to get a photo to CVOHarley.com.

I went into IPhoto and can find a selection for EMailing and Copying but that's about it.

Made it to Cleveland, TX just North of Houston around 3:30 pm Wednesday. It has been a very warm day.

A high light of the day was when one lane of I-10 was shut down due to a broken down Loomis Armoured vehicle that was off the road. A good Loomis vehicle was blocking the lane so they could transfer the cargo. Took me twenty sweltering minutes to get by. Our Cajun neighbors don't care for human BBQ pits lane splitting past their air-conditioned automobiles. Still can't figure why they couldn't pull the good Loomis vehicle off the road to load it.

Many 18 wheeler loads of hay being hauled (clap, clap, clap) Deep In the Heart of Texas. Dried out dry here.

Heading north through Dallas to Tulsa in the morning.

My fingers are too fat and my aim is poor.

Rode from Tulsa to Albuquerque. Simon met me at the motel and we rode over to Sadies for dinner. Weather was perfect. Wore my jacket the whole way.

Balloons tomorrow.

Can't stay awake.

The balloon show was great. Balloons were launching for two hours. 7:00 - 9:00 am. There were a couple of hundred balloons. Probably 100,000+ people attended. I've never seen that many smiles before.

Parked about a half mile away at Thunderbird Harley Davidson and walked. Got my oil changed afterwards and rode up to Taos, NM. My camera battery pooped out halfway here.

Northeast New Mexico is beautiful and the weather is gorgeous. Very friendly people, though I've only spoken to about twenty. They love living here.

I got a USMC camera strap from the recruiters for my 51 year old 200 lb fat ass doing 10 pull ups. I used to do twenty 8 years ago.  :nixweis

Going to the Royal Gorge in Colorado tomorrow and then Hwy 50 down to Silverton  and Durango.

Porthole, thanks for the tap-n-hold then drag cursor info. It works.

Going to try to get a Flickr on-line account set up. Lots of pics need loaded.

Good - let some of us know how to do the picture transfer.

Rode from Taos to Fort Garland, Co, to Welsenburg, Co, to Westcliffe, Co.

Stopped in Westcliffe to let my camera battery charge up. Lunch at Chappy,s microbrew and restaurant. Iced tea and burgers are good and free Wi-Fi.

What an amazing ride. The Aspen are bright yellow and the mountains are loaded with them. (Same color as my bike.) Highly recommend this route. Gorgeous scenery.

I created a Flickr Pro account and it asks me which photos to load by using select buttons. The select buttons can't locate the photos on my IPad like it does on a PC. I can greate photo groups using Flickr Suite but still have to figure out how to select the group or push the group to Pro. (IPad2 does not have Finder.)

I sure have a lot of photos.

Off to Canon City and the Royal Gorge.

Don, I use the photo bucket app and download to the site from there. This pic (originally taken from a cell phone) was taken from the photo bucket site (on my ipad) and put on the CVO site using the picture icon above. All done from my iPad this morning. Hope you're having a great time!!

Don't have an iPad, but frequently get asked "hod do I do this"  :nixweiss:

My fingers are too fat and my aim is poor.

Rode from Tulsa to Albuquerque. Simon met me at the motel and we rode over to Sadies for dinner. Weather was perfect. Wore my jacket the whole way.

Balloons tomorrow.

Can't stay awake.

Great ride Don. I hope you tried the ribs, can't wait to get back there again.  Lou

Hey Don, was the "State Line" you mentioned in Gulf Shores?  I worked in Pensacola for a year back in '84 and on a several occasions, visited the "Flora-Bama Lounge" http://www.florabama.com/ , where Jimmy Buffet would play now and then in his earlier days.

Just reading your comment brought back some pretty great memories.  "Nibblin on spongecake, watchen the sun bake all those tourests covered with oil..." 8)

I was heading to Gulf Shores but instead jumped on I-10 east. I was in a hurry to get to the excitement of New Orleans. (There wasn't any excitement that night.) When did they start the dueling pianos?

After 20 days I made it home tonight. One of the best adventures I've done. Met really great people and visited amazing parts of the country. I realize how fortunate I am that this opportunity became available to me.

Had some disappointing weather the last few days, rain, rain, wind, rain, hail, rain, snow, rain.  Just when you think the rain is bad you ride past those enduring bike riders wearing shorts and Wal-Mart ponchos. Then I realize it's not so bad because I've got a HD rainsuit, a fairing, lower fairings, heated liner and gloves, a Shark Helmet, yellow safety glasses, and a stereo attached to an amazing Harley Davidson and riding in an area that just goes on and on in beauty, rain or shine.

Didn't make it to Moab, Bryce, or even through Yosemite's Tioga Pass due to SNOW. Did get to hit some ice and slush this morning. Did not like that.

Time for sleep in my own bed next to an empty spot because Carole is out of the country on business.

I will also get busy on pictures.

Got to meet up with Simon on Friday. We went to dinner and then Simon showed me a couple of spots where I could see the balloons. It would have been great to have done a ride through the Taos area with him. Another day perhaps.

Pulled out in the morning and couldn't figure out why my bike died. Figured it out!

Going to the Balloon Festival. Lots of traffic. I decided to park at Thunderbird Harley Davidson and walk from there. About half a mile to the show and then get an oil change after. Two hours to get an $85.00 oil change!

A truck unloading a balloon. Had a lift gate to raise and lower the basket full of gear.

Tip over the basket and drag out the gear.

Testing a propane burner.

Spreading out a tarp to lay the balloon on.

Balloons left early to test the winds.

Not sure why the planes flew over in the Missing Man formation?

These Referee looking people were responsible for clearing an area of people so a balloon could take off safely. They would blow a whistle and people would clear away.

I tried to copy the code into this reply so you could see it but I haven't figured out how to make the code a comment.  :nixweiss:

He was way out and up there.

ANTELOPE CANYON PAGE ARIZONA.

Antelope Canyon is a sandstone canyon that was and is still being created by the eroding flash floods and the sand carried in the flood waters.

I was having breakfast at McDonalds when a curious couple started talking to the Harley rider. They recommended I go see Antelope Canyon. (Slot Canyon)

Transportation to the canyon in the back of 4WD pickups.

The Wash

Jamie, our Navajo guide, was an expert on the canyon, set all of our cameras to get the best colors, and was also our driver. A really cool lady.

The Downstream Opening/Entrance

Try not to get sky light into the photos for maximum colors.

Camera not set correctly.

Jamie changed the camera settings to ISO-800 and AWB to CLOUDY

Did I mention there were others in the canyon?

Everybody was taking pics.

Very fast walking.

The other end, the upstream opening.

Howling wolf.

Visiting riders from Europe.

Got my oil changed afterwards and rode up to Taos, NM. My camera battery pooped out halfway here.

Northeast New Mexico is beautiful and the weather is gorgeous. Very friendly people, though I've only spoken to about twenty. They love living here.

Someday we'll help Jock find those NE areas of New Mexico :)

Not sure why the planes flew over in the Missing Man formation?

Albuquerque, NM – “Father of Balloon Fiesta” Sid Cutter, will be honored during the 40th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta taking place October 1 through October 9.
Sid Cutter, founder of the Balloon Fiesta® passed away on May 21, 2011 after a long battle with stomach cancer. Cutter was a veteran in the aviation industry being the son of aviation pioneers WillamWilliam and Virginia Cutter, founders of Cutter Aviation. After 40 years in the power aircraft aviation industry Cutter discovered the “magic” of ballooning in 1971 and devoted the next 25 years to the sport.

Cutter founded the Balloon Fiesta and the first and second Hot Air Ballooning World Championships as well as the Albuquerque Aerostat Ascension Association (AAAA), the largest balloon club in the world, and World Balloon Corporation. World Balloon pilots traveled across the world to go to new heights with ballooning and spread Sid’s idea of “magic”. Cutter’s list of honors includes the United States National Hot Air Balloon Champion in 1978 and 1986, the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award in Aviation and The Dimplome Montgolfier, Hot Air Ballooning’s highest honor. Cutter was also inducted to the Albuquerque Sports Hall of Fame, the New Mexico Tourism Hall of Fame and the FAI International Hall of Fame. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® has dedicated this year’s 40th event to Sid Cutter, their founder and inspiration.

Many events will honor Cutter this year including: a Missing Man Formation created with balloons on the ground and an in-air fixed wing demonstration by planes held opening morning, and each pilot will release a white pibal balloon on October 1. The Sid Cutter Memorial Competition will take place on Tuesday, October 4. This competition will feature a boat in the middle of the launch field where pilots will aim to drop a baggie into the boat reminiscent of 1986 U.S. National Championship competition that Cutter participated in and won.

These Referee looking people were responsible for clearing an area of people so a balloon could take off safely. They would blow a whistle and people would clear away.

The Balloonists call them "zebras". They are the officials that wrangle the balloonists and determine when it's safe to fly.

Don, I use the photo bucket app and download to the site from there. This pic (originally taken from a cell phone) was taken from the photo bucket site (on my ipad) and put on the CVO site using the picture icon above. All done from my iPad this morning. Hope you're having a great time!!

So sorry to Hi-Jack DD.... :jack:

Is that a Papillon? We had one for 7 years that looked exactly like that little one there.
