The Long Ride Home......
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:52:52 PM »

**EDIT**  I split this topic and moved it to this Ride Report as a part of the total story.  JC

So after 300 miles home in the rain it's not clean but it is home.
Well, , , it's East Coast Home.

Again, it's dirty, but that is only a short term issue! It will shine like new money when JC leaves here with it!

OBB.....this is the only bike Nancy's ever let in her garage.  She relegates all the others to the back.   :huepfenlol2:

Thanks Mike.  Yea, on one hand I'm really looking forward to it.  But yet I just got home from getting another CT scan on my back.  I guess I'll know just how comfortable that Ultra Classic is going to be for me, once I get back to California.

I'm not sure but you'll have to come down from the north to ask them.

Bet you've never been accused of being from the north before, huh Mark.  :huepfenlol2:   Seriously, I never realized that Semi Valley could be so damn far from Coronado.  Maybe not miles wise but it still takes four hours to get there.  :(

We'll make that happen.  There's starting to be a few members within an hour or so of San Diego.  We'll have to plan a ride or something.....maybe an overnighter to Ensenada, Mexico.

JC, that's the ultimate definition of a good buddy.  Not only going up to get the new bike BUT ALSO cleaning her up for ya.  Good deal, Chip.  I love this site.......

JC, when are you heading to NC?  You going down from Chip's to I-20 and scooting home that way or I-40 home.  You stated your proposed route in another thread but can't find it.  If you are heading I-40, I'll meet you somewhere around K'noxville and buy you lunch.....

Welcome back JC can't wait for the ride report.  As many of us know it will be like being there ...  :2vrolijk_21:

I don't think that'll be happening this trip.  Since I'm rolling non stop, I don't want to have to pull over to put the camera away every time I hit a bit of rain.  Not even taking my camera this trip.

But I'll be back on those photo ride reports soon enough. :2vrolijk_21:  By the way.....Jock's the one I learned from (what little learnin I have).....he's my hero and I want to be just like him when I grow up.  :P

JC, now you can bring the dogs.

Picked up a Malti-poo from the California Maltese Rescue.  About six and a half months old now.....feels like we're raising a two year old.  Really smart dog and she's already earned the nickname Houdini because she manages to get out no matter what we do, up and over a 5' wrought iron fence.  She uses her paws like they're hands.  Blows everybody away when they get to see her in action.

The bike is ready for the man!
Oil/filter changed (Mobil 1 of course), air pressure checked on 5 wheels and corrected, bike washed, bike waxed (Royal Blue of course), windshield and adjustable wings polished. Only thing left is filling up the gas tank and adjusting the air pressure on the Bushtec suspension once loaded.
Look out California the man is coming home next weekend!

The JC new bike story continues,
Of course the flight from California was late.
We picked up JC at the Charlotte Airport at midnight Christmas Eve.
Drove home, packed the bike and at 1:00 AM Christmas Day JC left for California.
My job is done!
Ride safe my friend.

Sure sounds like you've done an amazing job getting JC on his way on his beautiful new ride...

But no cookies & milk?  :nixweiss:

I thought all merry men who travel through the night on Christmas Eve were treated to that.  But then again, a wash & wax is tough to beat!

Ride safe & enjoy JC.  :2vrolijk_21:

Only got the text from him.
We adjusted the backrest to be tight up against him.
We hope the back doesn't become a big issue!

He is now in Meridian Mississippi heading toward Shreveport Louisiana.
I think he is taking a southern route.

JC's plan is I 85 to I 20 to I 10, which is the most direct route and also should keep him out of the weather...    :2vrolijk_21:

The JC new bike story continues,
Of course the flight from California was late.
We picked up JC at the Charlotte Airport at midnight Christmas Eve.
Drove home, packed the bike and at 1:00 AM Christmas Day JC left for California.
My job is done!
Ride safe my friend.

Damned fine job getting JC's new ride, detailing and servicing it so it was ready to go.

I hope he is doing well on his journey and his back doesn't give himany discomfort.

Hopefully you and yours are enjoying the day and the weather isn't too bad up your way.

Happy holidays

834.6 miles today, for a total of 1910.4 miles in the past 40 hours.

Got caught in a freezing drizzle in El Paso this afternoon.  I knew it was cold but I had my heated gear cranked up.  When I slowed to turn in to the dealership (the largest in the world?) I opened my face shield and quickly realized it was freezing drizzle....pelted in the face with little ice chips.  That was a first.  And for some reason I would have never associated El Paso, Texas with snow capped mountains surrounding it. :nixweiss:

I'm currently in Lordsburg, New Mexico.....exactly 22 miles form the Ariz. state line and it's 31F tonight.  Don't think I'll be leaving at 3 or 4 am tomorrow. :o  But, if I should and make it home by 1:00pm....that would be near ocean to ocean in 60 hours.

The back pain is still at bay......amazingly.  Thank you God!  No coincidences here, He gets all the credit.  But I do have all the stiff, sore, achey muscles that one gets at my age doing these kind of rides.  Have to have a talk with yourself prior to stopping....."o.k. legs....get ready......this is going to take real effort and concentration not just spontaeous action".   :nervous:

Just did a weather forecast search for Lordsburg, New Mexico.  The low tonight is going to be 23F.  Yep, don't think I'll be leaving so early tomorrow. :nervous:   J knew it was cold!

568 miles from here to Coronado.  Google maps says it's 7 hrs. 54 mins.  At the speeds I've been riding (85 mph) I'm only getting 130 miles to the tank of gas.  But that's OK, I' due to get off and streatch a bit at that point, anyway.

I think anyone at any age riding those kind of miles in that time is going to be a tad "stiff, sore,achey"... Great job and and it should be in the mid 60's in Diego when you get here. People around here think "thats freezing" here but you will have some stories to tell them..
Stay safe!

So Glad all is going well JC.  That freezing stuff would make me pucker for sure.  Have a safe remaining trip and
congrats on your new bike.  That is one of the greatest deals I have seen in many a moon.

Best to You,

Hope you got a good rest and the sun burnt off some of the cold prior to hitting the road. BTW, my first time in El Paso I arrived in the dark, got a room and went to sleep.  When I got up in the morning I opened the drapes and was in awe of the mountains and the snow caps. Like you, I had no clue they were there.  They were beautiful, however I had business in Mexico, not near as nice.

Have a great ride today :2vrolijk_21:

Looking at the radar this morning it looks like JC was able to avoid most of the rain. Way to scoot JC. I sent prayers the remainder of your trip goes well.

I watched the weather enough to know JC was hitting some cold temperatures.  Doing long mile days can be tough enough, but add rain and/or cold and it becomes another level of challenge...  Great job, JC and stay safe on the last leg of your trip!   :2vrolijk_21:

I was watching that deal on eBay - Happy someone in the group got it, especially someone who deserved it and needed it as well!

I just love to see all of the support that happens on this site!  God Blesses us, each and every one.

JC is home!
2491.5 miles.
In my garage his GPS read 2415 miles to home.
I guess he took the long way.

So evidently you're not going to fly out to San Diego and take care of the cleaning and shining of JC's new bike while he rests up??  What's up with that?

Congratulations JC...  Never doubted for a second you'd pull it off.   :2vrolijk_21:

My contract scope is 250 miles any direction. He exceeded those numbers by a few miles.
Sorry, but I prepped him he was on his own after the 250.

Glad you made it home safe....rest up then go clean the bike.

Couldn't rest knowing that bike and trailer were sitting out there looking like it'd ran through a storm.  Had to go clean it as soon as I got it unloaded.

All the way home (especially in those 18F temps yesterday morning) I kept thinking "man, I can't wait to get home....back to that warm weather.....jeans and a t-shirt again!".  I get back to San Diego and find out it's an unseasonably cold week here, the mid 60s.   :(  By San Diego standards, that's freezing cold.

Now Andy & Sherry are down here again this weekend from Nor Cal.  Jon & Susan (Jonga & wasjons) is also donw here this week, from Nor Cal.  They're all going to stop by today to see the new bike and trailer.  I'm blaming them for bringing the cold Nor Cal temps down here with them. :P

Thanks everybody for the emails, PMs and texts of concerns and thoughts and prayers.  God was listening to all and carried me through without issues.  The bike (completly stock, right down to the exhaust) and trailer both performed flawlessly.  I have to say this is the most comfortable "stock" bike I've ever rode.  No Corbin seat needed, no handling issues, not even at speed in the twisties.  I'm very impressed with this bike! :2vrolijk_21:

MAT, Grandpadoc, Andy, Van, Richard Baker and the others that have contacted me about riding.........let's ride! :2vrolijk_21:

So now I will have to get a trailer to ride with you? lol

You did a long and safe ride in a short time

Glad the heated gear worked for you.....Every time I use mine I just smile and wonder why

it took 50 years to get some.

Had a slew of visitors stop by today.  Lou & Terry (granpadoc) and Mike (MAT) stopped by mid day.  We rode down the strand to Imperial Beach.  Walked out to the end of the pier and had fish & chips.

Then Jon (Jonga) & Susan (was jons) showed up.  We walked out to the lawn area by the bay and visited for awhile.  Then Andy (ak) and Sherry, Kerry & Christian showed up.  We all walked over to The Ferry Landing and had dinner at Candela's.  When we got back over here, we quickly realized that Jon & Susan's car had been towed.  I called in a favor with the tow service and got their car back for them....no charge!

So all ended up well today  Lots of friends visiting, a little riding and an adventure with the tow service.

Richard, you don't need a trailer........come on down!

The Long Ride Home......
« Reply #85 on: January 01, 2015, 12:59:57 PM »

This journey wasn't just from Chip & Nancy's in Matthews, North Carolina to my home on Coronado.  This journey begin a couple of years ago, when I sold my 2010 CVO Street Glide.

At the time I sold that bike, I had major back issues every time I got on it but especially during the rides I really prefer.....the long distance rides.....the journey, not the destination.  I thought I was finally done with riding....for good.  I sold the bike and everything that I owned Harley Davidson related (bikes, parts, clothing & gear, collectables, etc.).

But I have a couple of road dogs that had other ideas.  There was a conspiracy of sorts.  They would come to locations that I'd travel to (even out of state!) with my truck and 5th wheel......but they'd be on their CVOs.  No pressure.....no preaching......no trying to talk me in to anything.  Once in awhile the conversation would come up but no pressure.

One of my road dogs, Don (ddavidson) bought all my riding gear (Gerbing eXtreme Element heated suit, Nolan helmet w/wireless bluetooth B-4, Screamin Eagle racing jacket and matching gloves, etc.)....stuff that I could not replace today.  He put it all in a storage container up in his attic because he already owned pretty much all the same stuff.

Another road dog (who was convinced that the Street Glide suspension was a part of my problem) came up with the idea "if you have room to keep one of my Ultra Classics down there in Coronado then I'd have something to ride when I fly down to visit my daughter".  Yea.....sure......OK.  I brought the Ultra Classic down and didn't ride it much at all, at first.  But after several months (and having already rode back 400 miles from the Carmel GTG), I realized that I was able to ride and ride further without any major back issues.  I begin to consider....."what if I could ride again?".  I looked at a few bikes here and there but still wasn't convinced.  Several other members of this forum from the deep So Cal area (San Diego area) asked me on several occassions to go for a ride but I just didn't want to rain on anybody's parade if all of a sudden I was in major pain....so I passed on those invitations.  Eventually, I realized I could ride further and further without the Norco pain pills.

Then, somebody posted in the 3rd party for sale board and the rest is history.  Andy's conspiracy of loaning me one of his Ultra Classics for six months.....Don buying up all my stuff and storing it (suspecting that I'd need it back some day).....it all came together and so for the long ride home (literally it was about 2,500 miles.....figureativly, it was about two years) I could really dwell on the kind of friends that I have and be totally greatful to these guys and everybody else that stepped up and helped to make this all happen.  I appreciate all of you!  :2vrolijk_21:

So here's bits and pieces of the physical journey home....with my new baby

A few pics from the road.  As some of you know, it's a long ride when you're knocking down 800-1,000 miles a day and so the states all kind of start blending together and my memory fades of what state I was in with some of the pics.

In that 2 1/2 days I rode through North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and finally.....California.

Notice the safety rubber band on my radar detector.....just in case the suction cup doesn't hold.   :)

I made a mental note the first time I laid eyes on the bike...."man, that cup holder has to go".  After riding across the country using it and being more into comfort rather than the look good, I have to say the cup/bottle holder is probably going to stay.

Vernee drove down to the I-20 junction and met me for coffee at the infamous Waffle House at about 5:00 a.m.  Unfortunately, I was already short on sleep and kind of spacey so I totally forgot to take any pics.

OK, I do know where this pic was taken.....at the Miss. Louisiana state line....

And at 85 mph, a quick, snapshot view while crossing the bridge, looking through the girders.....

and the mighty Mississipp....

Oh yes, I can tell you where this pic was taken, too..... ;)

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I encountered a freezing rain (ice storm?) in El Paso, Texas.  It was very light so I was able to keep moving.  But when I stopped in Lordsburgh, New Mexico that night it was well below freezing.  When I got on the road at 5:00 a.m. it was 24F.

Those that have been around this forum for a few years know that me and my road dogs have rode in below freezing temps before, snow, rain....we've experienced it all.  But I've never rode for hours and hours in this below freezing temps.

I stopped a couple of hours later for gas at a truck stop in Ariz.  As I walked in the door, the lady behind the counter yelled out to another emplyee across the room "Fred, it's 18F degrees out there right now and it's dropping!".  Even with my Gerbing heated gear, boot insoles, gloves, etc. after hours of this, it was feeling like the heated gear wasn't working.....I was CcccOoooLllllllDddddd! :nervous:

I would have never connected El Paso, Tex. or anywhere along the Mexico boarder (yes, the boarder fence is within eye sight in many locations along the soutwhest) or anywhere in Ariz. with snow or below freezing temps.  Boy, was I in for an education.

I finally made it the land of seguro cactus but it was still very cold.  I don't think I ever turned my Gerbing dual t-stats down from the "high" setting.

Oh yes, and I did burn up my Gerbind dual controller about 120 miles east of El Paso....so I rode for a hour and a half without any heat other than the seat and handlegrips.  I was able to stop at the world's largest dealership there in El Paso and buy the HD branded dual controller.  I happen to have a single controller and in the future, it will be in the bike or trailer.....just as an added "be prepared" item.

Somewhere back east, I think Texas, I passed this rig.  I passed it again on the freeway just after stopping at the dealership in El Paso and they finally stopped for gas at the same station that I stopped at out in the middle of nowhere, Ariz.  It was two ladys and three kids headed to Legoland in San Diego and they bought this 63 trailer (I don't remember what they said the make is).  They were averageing 80 mph while I was averaging 85 mph.  But they only had to stop half as often as I had to, for gas.  I did feel compelled to discuss the down side of towing a trailer at this speed, especially a trailer this old.  But I figured they didn't want the lecture and had probably already heard it from others so.....it did have a late model axel with shocks and LT tires so somebody had updated that much.

I finally arrived home here in Coronado in the early afternoon and rode it straight out to the water edge for this shot...

Over the next 24 hours, a number of friends....most from this forum.....stopped by to get a peek at the new ride.

Lou & Terry (grandpa doc) and Mike (MAT) showed up.  We rode down the strand to Imperial Beach for a short ride......

We walked out to the end of the pier for the best fish & chips!

and, believe it or not, the Mexico border within eye sight, this is one place that people can get in the ocean between xmas and new year's without a wet suit.

We all had to start somewhere.......

Time for Lou & Terry and Mike to head back north.  As Babe and I rode in the driveway, Jon & Susan (Jonga & Wasjons) showed up.

Soon Andy & Sherry and Kerry & Christian showed up.  Soon it was time for dinner and we walked down to the Coronado Ferry Landing for dinner....

I really like this bike and the trailer (my 3rd Bushtec) but I'm most greatful for my friends that helped to get me back on a bike and make all of this possible!   :2vrolijk_21:

JC

Nancy and I are glad to be a part of you getting where you are today with that bike.
A couple thoughts, damn, for a single guy who's mission was to get to California as fast as possible you had a lot of luggage.
Had to be a hundred pounds of stuff. (I unloaded it out of the truck) Did you check the air in the shocks on the trailer.
They had 40 lbs when you left us. I asked because the wheels appear angled in in some of the pictures. A friend pm'd me and suggested I do a pressure check on the shock before you got there. I did and they held for a week. But that was just sitting in the car garage.

Did it use any oil? I changed the old oil (had about 5K miles on it) and put in 3.5 quarts of Mobil 1 20 X 50 and changed the filter. I'm sure you found it but the 1/2 qt. left was in the saddlebag. I'm of the opinion any bike/motor that can stand your riding for 2491 miles over 2.5 days at 80+ mph must be a good one.

We are also thankful for you getting home safe. It appears other site members have hit some really bad weather in Texas and are stuck.
It's hard to imagine you being stuck in any place for long. As you drove out of our garage at 1:00 am that Thursday morning I said to Nancy "our part of this great adventure is done." We were glad to have a small part of your coming home. Coming home was more than just getting home it was fun to be a part of you being back in the saddle.

With our son in the Coast Guard being transferred to San Diego I plan to call Andy about keeping that ultra exercised when we are there.
We look forward to seeing you and Andy in Ouray!

As many states as I went through on xmas day and the next day, I never saw one LEO.....not one highway patrol, not one sherriff, not one city police and my radar detector never went off all day long!  The best day of the year to travel by vehicle is xmas day....no traffic and no law! ;)

This is the most awesome story I have ever read.  :).  JC, I remember when you hung up your gear and walked away from your passion.  I cried but understood why you did what you had too do.  Reading this story and seeing you back in the saddle warms my heart!  This is the best news I've read this year  :P.  Now, why the heck didn't you call Mee when you went through Las Cruces?  Did you forget that I live there now?  I often run up to the dealer in El Paso and would have loved to of seen you.   ;D

To Chip and Nancy., Thank you for your kindness!  This isn't the first story where I have read about you going out of your way to help a friend.  Your kindness is amazing and I'm so happy to call you both my friends.  God Bless you both.

Judy, 2500 miles in two and a half days doesn't allow much time for social visits.  When I got to your neck of the woods it was so cold I was afraid if I stopped anywhere longer than to gas up, that I'd be frooze in place.  :nervous:
