Top off the tank when you can especially when you get up in the northern British Columbia area and into the Yukon. Nothing but miles and miles of miles and miles up there.
Harley shop in Edmonton Hey Jock---how do you get more than one pic in a post? I see that you have 3-5 pics in some of yours
what more can I say
the wireless is terrible for uploads-----
When you see these skid marks--life gets exciting. Your seat leaves the saddle---you don't know if it's going to be only fart high or flying. And you really don't want your feet on the highway pegs---WOW.
The big dips are called frost heave's and they can be pretty big, like you have probably already experienced. They have been responsible for throwing an unsuspecting rider right off the bike. I remember the seeing the majority of them between Haines Junction and Northway Alaska. That is also the worst stretch of road.
Well thanks alot Indenial!!!! You just pushed one of my bucket list rides to next summer. After looking at your pics, this is a trip I gotta make so need to do it next year (Canadian Rockies this summer) to make sure it gets done. What were the normal daytime temps? Need to pack heavy? Thanks for taking us along.
My new best friendLooks like you found the...........South Pole :vrolijk27: :huepfenlol2:
DAY 8-- Short day to Fairbanks, 250 mi. Rained the whole way. I was grateful though, people in the resturant at breakfast said bikers got caught in snow yesterday a little further south. I was happy for the rain. Found out my Bates Gortex boots leak. So now I'm looking for a better pair---any help out there? What works?Cruiserworks boots
1Looks like he's doing his business. I guess this answers the question if he came out of the woods to do it.
Thanks guys for all your nice comments. It makes the effort worth it. Ya know, I passed about 25 bikes on the way to the Circle and they were all BMWs, not a Harley in the bunch. More to come
This trip has allowed me to relax and just be in today. Today I had a lot of serenity. I called for a motel reservation at Dease Lake in two days. She asked what date and I said “I don’t know, what day is it today? I’m beginning to lose track of which day it is (tues, wed?)
DAY 11--or 12--
It got me thinking (that’s all there is to do when riding in the rain) about my many blessings. Something I don’t do enough of is think about the good things in my life. I am blessed with so much and I take it for granted. A family that actually loves me, a fantastic team that I get to work with all week, my health and a job that I love. It just doesn’t get any better than that. Then I got to thinking—(it was still raining), and Carol and I were able to see Mt McKinley which hadn’t been visible for over a week, there was sun for two days before my Arctic Circle run and the ride was just incredible, then when my boots started leaking, a pair that I wanted was on Ebay and in my size and I won the auction. I no longer believe in coincidences and haven’t for a long time. I know it’s a God thing. And I appreciate it all-----thank you.
It's been great to follow your ride! Would love to ride down to Rochester some time and hear about it over some chips and guac.
We need a "Thread of the Year" award. This is it for 2014, hands down. :2vrolijk_21:

1I swear I can feel the wind in my face and smell the fresh mountain air while looking at this picture!
I know the voices will return someday. This trip has allowed me to relax and just be in today. Today I had a lot of serenity. I called for a motel reservation at Dease Lake in two days. She asked what date and I said “I don’t know, what day is it today? I’m beginning to lose track of which day it is (tues, wed?) I miss my family, my 4 year old granddaughter, the girls at the office, and my black Lab, Toby. You decide the order----I’m not going there.
Maybe tomorrow it will be sunny and you won’t have to listen to my “thinking”
See ya tomorrow---
Really didn't need pics of the bike, doesn't go with the story, Warlock
Get it right
Today was the big push home--625 miles which leaves an easy 300 tomorrow---I've following a big front so the last 3 days have been perfect---even the ever-present North Dakota cross winds were absent--was able to cruise at 3400 rpm's most of the day---roads were long and flat, except for a few miles on the western end---just pounding pavement from one gas stop to the nextYou cruise at 3400 rpms?
When I get home, I'll post a few notes on equipment that I found essential and some helpful hints for those who are thinking about a long trip.
When I think back on all the events ---the one that keeps coming to the top is the Indian kid who gave me his knife. It was totally not necessary and was a gift from the heart. He will never know how he touched my life. I don’t even know his name-----
I need a hug----
Looks like you got an appreciation kiss thrown in for good measure. Congrats on making all of us on CVOHarley smile as well as that Indian kid.Damn. Do you still get decent mileage?
DH
PS: I have taken to running between 3500 and 4000 for cruising the slab as well.
Damn. Do you still get decent mileage?
Does a bear chit in the woods?---apparently not around here
I want to thank everyone who has replied. It makes it all worthwhile. I hope people enjoyed it.
Cowboy, as far as the coat and jacket. I'm happy with the Aerostich stuff and I would buy them again. ( I would get the AD-1's as they fit more like jeans , but for $300+, what I have is just fine.). But you can check this forum for advise on clothing. http://www.advrider.com/forums I have found a lot of helpful info there.

Perhaps too late to get one but you may want to consider one of these - Saddlebag Gas Tank - One gallon. One of my buds on our journey had one and he needed it!

WOW, Thank you for sharing all this, what a trip, the pictures and the comments were awesome. If you had this to do again would you travel alone or would you have another bike or 2 with you?
My little group has a rule. Whoever is leading stops whenever and in general goes wherever and decides basically when to stop unless somebody voices an opinion one way or the other. The main rule is: if you criticize the leader to harshly, YOU'RE the new leader!some are leaders and know the road rules....some just think they can be a leader!!!! been there, done that. Perfer to ride alone without trying to make everyone happy!!!
Your picture gives new meaning to "down under".... :2vrolijk_21:
Fixed it for ya.
I stopped riding in large groups in 1996 after a disastrous local toy run. WILL NOT do that again. I like groups of 4 or less most of the time unless the others are experienced riders. Otherwise, a one bike group will suffice. A single bike and 1,000 miles of highway can clear the head....
With you there Haird .. I ride with a few friends locally but riding solo across country is the ultimate escape.

I just re-visited my old thread this past weekend. Wow what a trip. I just wanted to emphasize to anyone who is/has thought about doing a trip like this to "just do it". There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of some aspect of this trip.

There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of some aspect of this trip. I have a picture enlarged to a poster of the Arctic Circle in my office. It was a blessing for sure. I am aware of several people that were planning the trip, but some reason couldn't do it. Others had to cancel out do to other riders cancelling. There will always be a reason not to go. But when you do it, the memories just don't go away. Ask Dawg, who made the trip last summer--Congratulations. I'm sure he would be more than happy to answer questions as well.

Getting ready to make the same trip, this thread has been a great help. Thanks Indenial for the information on where to stay on the way!!![/color]
