09S/E roadglide is right on. I've had Type 1 diabetes for 24 years this month. I used to take 2 - 3 shots per day, until switching to an insulin pump in the fall of 2000. When I was taking shots, I mixed my own combination of Lente (longer-acting) and Humalog (short-acting) insulin, depending on what I was going to eat, how physically active I was going to be, and other factors that would determine how much of each type of insulin I needed.
I always thought the pre-mixed 70/30 insulins were someone's misguided attempt at making diabetes care more easy. It's not!! Typically, I was nowhere near a 70/30 mix with my custom concoction! The amount of insulin you take is such a matter of personal need, no two people will ever be the same, and that's why I could never understand the 70/30 mixes.
You really do need to see an endocrinologist and I would strongly suggest you also consider some formal diabetes education, which the doctor will probably either recommend, or insist that you take. Who knows, with the right balance of diet and exercise, you might find you can actually return to the pills!
