Humulin 70/30
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:15:24 AM »

Anyone here use Humulin 70/30 to help control their diabetes? If you do how much are you using? My doc told me to take 15 units in the AM and 10 in the PM. Then depending on the readings in the AM and PM go up 5 units/dose till it gets where he wants it. I have been doing that and I don't know if what I am taking is getting to be a lot of insulin or not. Right now I am at 40 units AM and 35 PM and it's still not where he wants it. I am just looking for input not a medical diagnosis. I just don't know if what I am taking is a lot or a little. I was talking to another biker friend and he is up above 100 units in the AM and PM, but he is not the one to model oneself on.

I take care of my son who has been diabetic since he was 3, he is 12 now. Its not a matter if its alot or a little what matters is what your blood sugar is. do you check it 4 to 5 times a day ? The amount of insulin depends on your food intake. Are you type one or type two ? if you are seeing a general doctor to manage your diabetes you should stop and go see an endocrinologist a doc that specializes in diabetic care. Its very serious! your weight has alot to do with managing your sugar also. Do not play around with it or take it lightly. you must eat right and exercise every day! do the right thing for the people that love you. It takes alot of discipline but you must. I'm very passionate about this subject watching my son go through this. Best of luck my friend......Rick    :2vrolijk_21:

Type 2, my regular doc got me started on pills a couple of years ago but they worked at first but then a few months ago they seem to have stopped working then a couple of months ago I stopped taking them, dropped nearly 30 pounds overnight and my sugar stayed the same. I started the insulin about 2 weeks ago and I am on a sliding scale going up in 5 unit increments depending on what my readings are in the AM and PM till my readings stabilize. You probably more about what I am on about than I do.

You really need to see a specialist. that type of insulin may not even be right for you. most of the time there are two types a long lasting and a quick acting. But your general health is the largest contributing factor to type two. take the time to take care of that. I'm sure you know how bad that can be... blindness, kidney failure, loss of limbs and you cant ride without feet !! Go see the endocrine doc. and keep a record of what you eat and how much at EVERY meal check your blood sugar at least 4 times a day. This will give the doc the info he needs to properly manage your diabetes. You'll be glad you did and it will make you realize just how crappy you felt before. Take care wildrat..  Rick

10-4, My wife has a client that is a endocrinologist and he has been waiting for me to show up at his office. I guess I'll tell the wife to go ahead and make an appointment for me. Thanks for the input.

09S/E roadglide is right on.  I've had Type 1 diabetes for 24 years this month.  I used to take 2 - 3 shots per day, until switching to an insulin pump in the fall of 2000.  When I was taking shots, I mixed my own combination of Lente (longer-acting) and Humalog (short-acting) insulin, depending on what I was going to eat, how physically active I was going to be, and other factors that would determine how much of each type of insulin I needed.

I always thought the pre-mixed 70/30 insulins were someone's misguided attempt at making diabetes care more easy.  It's not!!  Typically, I was nowhere near a 70/30 mix with my custom concoction!  The amount of insulin you take is such a matter of personal need, no two people will ever be the same, and that's why I could never understand the 70/30 mixes.

You really do need to see an endocrinologist and I would strongly suggest you also consider some formal diabetes education, which the doctor will probably either recommend, or insist that you take.  Who knows, with the right balance of diet and exercise, you might find you can actually return to the pills!

I did not want the pills that I had been taking they were putting weight on me. I lost nearly 30 pounds in about 1 month when I stopped taking the pills and my sugar did not really change much.
I feel the same about the 70/30 it is not doing what it needs to do. My sugars are down, not where they need to be but getting there. The thing is like you said depending what you are doing, eating etc. has a lot to do with how much of what you need. My diet is good, I changed the way I was eating a long while back. I don't even remember now when I was diagnosed with type 2. It's been awhile. The other issue is exercise, I can't do much of nothing. I try but end up hurting. I take a strong pain supposed killer everyday because of the injury, and the surgeries the wonderful doctors did on my back. I do not work anymore. The only real thing I can do is drive and ride, and the riding can be torture sometimes but I feel so much better mentally when I can get out for a nice traffic free ride. I think the endorphins released while riding numbs the pain until I get off the bike and begin to relax. I will have the wife make the appointment for me with the endo doc on Monday. Gotta go, I hear her bike. See Ya! Take Care!

Holy crap!  He's doing great, then!  I struggle to get mine at 7.0%.  I've had a few sub-7.0%'s, but usually, I'm somewhere between 7.0% and 7.5%, or so.  No complications so far, so I must be doing something right.  But, my hat's off to your son (and you)!  That is quite an accomplishment, especially with a kid and all of the variety of things they face in their lives each day! :2vrolijk_21:
