Title: Color change
Post by: Hdolfje on November 13, 2016, 09:30:43 AM
I picked up my new atomic red a few weeks ago. https://youtu.be/30gk-KtBCz0
And was not very happy with the red saddlebags. The front is nice but the red on the back is too much for me. I ordered the green paint set new for 2017 but for europe they were sold out. Now i'm thinking of changing the colours on the back. Red will be black and black will be red so there's more balance in the bike.
We have a very good painter fot the job and i'm sure the result will be very nice.
I told the painter about the green paintset and he offered to repaint the whole bike green and black. Not the 2017 paintset but he uses the existing pattern on the bike and make the bike green and black just like the 2011 Krypto.
Only two days to decide for red or green. Any ideas?

I would go for the red and black, with the saddle bags in black, like in the pic.

I like the red on black as the bottom picture shows.
Green is ok , but on someone elses bike, not on mine.

its your bike and i will say it takes a big set of balls to change the color of a CVO, so if you want a one of one go for it  :2vrolijk_21:

I noticed the same thing when I first saw photo's of the red and black CVO for 2017.  The front of the bike appears to be black with red accents, but then they switched for the bags and side covers and made them red with black accents.  I prefer your photo-shopped photo and personally think that's the way the factory should have done it in the first place.

I guess I'm in the minority......I like the factory CVO paint job.
I wouldn't want to be one of the millions of other black Harleys on the road. (yes I know this would have red accents.) Especially since you paid for a limited edition paint on your CVO already.
The green is nice but some people consider green to be bad luck on a motorcycle, car, truck or boat. It would also open up teasing for nicknames such as "Kermit the frog" or "John Deere tractor".
You might want to consider buying an extra set of tins and painting them , then keeping the original set so the bike could be returned to stock CVO trim if you decide to change back at a later date.
Good luck with your decision.

In 2013 my brother in law bought a CVO Roadglige and decided a few months later he hated the "orange" paint job (his words) so he had a very talented painter match a CVO limited paint set. Came out terrific but when he went to sell it a couple of years later it absolutely killed the value even though he thought he was improving the value by making it a "one off". Took him 6 months to sell and Im guessing it finally went for about 4K less than if he never painted it.
Just a FYI and it could  be completely different across the pond...

but about your question, I think the reverse on the red/black would be amazing! Thats the way the orange/black one is set up.
I have the same bike as you and I thought the red "butt" looked better in person than in the pics and really like it now but still think it may look better reversed.
Good luck with whatever you decide, its an amazing bike!

I bit the bullet. I change the colors of the rear part. Red is going to be black and the black will be red. I will post the after pictures. I will have the wrap front fender and the new side covers painted in matching colors.

I like your new plan as well as the original scheme. Only down side is the lids. You will be faced with the same  issue I have with the lids being the darker color, scuffs will show up alot easier than in the lighter red, or candy cobalt in my case.

I have a 2011 SESG that I bought because I loved the paint scheme. When I customized it with the wheels, fairing etc. the painter expanded on the original paint scheme to add more color...as if it was part of the OEM paint.  I love it.

Too me, your putting two different paint schemes together that don't work out mid way trough flowing from front to rear of the bike.,

Your mock up photo on the bottom doesn't work for me, JMHO!!

As the saying goes... "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and personally I think it will look awesome!

If you compare all the 2017 colours, the black & red one has a reverse paint scheme compared to the other three, and all he's doing is making the back end the same as the other three.

Like I say, I think it will look awesome when we see the complete package put back together, but for now it is a wait & see situation.

To each their own.

On a more personal note, as soon as I picked up my 2008 Anniversary CVO Ultra (Copper & Black) I felt the factory made a mistake painting the lowers copper, and almost immediately had them at the painters changing them to black.  Again, not everyone will agree, but I feel my bike now looks like it should have  coming off the line with a similar paint scheme to every other Ultra/Limited's scheme with the lowers painted the same as the lower side of the front fender, upper fairing and fuel tank.

As I went through all the posts I went back and forth no less than three times. On the red options. The green would not work for me. Seeing the finished product. I am sold! That damn thing looks much better. Hell, the factory should get with you and change the remainder to the way you did yours. I cannot imagine it hurting resale value seeing as you kept to the Red/Black combination.

Heck yeah... Nice job!

Nice!
Can you advise the make and model of your seat and how you like it?  Looks like it will take a backrest as well.  My factory is okay for short runs but on trips it kills me.
Thanks
