08 Primary Q's
« on: July 10, 2008, 11:50:56 PM »

What fluid/oil are most of you running? My 08 fxstsse came with the syn3 the dealer is trying to talk me into HD formula+ for the trans and primary? Keep the syn3 in the motor only

Also i would like to know for sure if my SE cvo 110 has an SE clutch spring or not? I have heard it does and does not.

Thanks

Redline Deavy Duty Shock Proof (Pepto Bismal)in the Tranny and Redline MTL in the Primary. Amsoil. Mobil I V Twin, Synthetic oils in the crankcase. I have been using this combo for in all of my bikes over many years and no problems.

Your dealer is on the right track, since a real gear oil is much better in the trans than SYN3.  He of course is going to recommend H-D products, but you can do better with other brands.  I've been using Redline Shockproof Heavy in the trans on my last two bikes and I'm completely satisfied with it.  BelRay Gear Saver is another good choice that I've used in the past.  As for the primary, you don't need anything special in that application.  Formula+ works fine, as does most anything out there that's compatible with a wet clutch.  I use the same Mobil-1 V-Twin I use in the engine, to cut down on the number of products sitting on the shelf in the garage.

The 103 and 110 CVO's have the heavier clutch spring.  If you want to verify, look up the 110 Stage 1 kit in the Harley catalog and you will note that there is a new clutch spring as part of the package.

Will the hd formula+ in the trans give me a quieter shift when hot?

The only time i have had a problem was at the beach and it was hot out the shifts where harsh. When the bike cool off they where fine.
