Just picked up my 120R!
« on: October 11, 2013, 09:51:15 PM »

Just picked up my new 120R today. Got my cams ordered from T-Man. Head pipes are in from Dragos. CFR mufflers have been shipped from Iron Aces. Gonna order my TB from Horsepower Inc next week. And then all that is left to order will be my new clutch from Barnett. Gonna be a fun winter project.

You should rip it apart and do that crank. It's the heart of the beast. Must be strong.

I did that on purpose because everyone out there has an opinion. I have done a ton of research and decided on what I think will be the best build for me. Once it is together and running I will report all that was done. And yes I am going to do the crank.

You are going to love it. When I did mine all my buddies thought I was "out of my mind" and it's turned out to be the best move ever!

And yes I am going to do the crank.

Question.  Not a knock but a point of curiosity.  Everything up to and including crankcases to reach that displacement is available separately.  If the intent after purchasing the engine assembly is to break it down this completely and replace some significant bit of it why not order the pieces separately to begin with and do one assembly and save some redundancy?

That's like saying why don't you just buy your new bike from the parts catalog 1 part at a time. Then you don't have to change anything. Am I missing something here? Not changing the crank. Just having it welded. As for the cams, I don't like the 266E that come stock on the 120R.

I've heard and read about the CFR being touchy to tune but I'm sure a competent tuner can figure that out for him. I heard a set of CFRs when in NC last month. I've not heard anything else like them. Damn those are sweet!  :2vrolijk_21:

Actually there's a significant difference between building an engine for an existing bike versus building a bike from scratch.  But you knew that....  Since you suggested it, however, it's been done.  ;D

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=43691.0

It was a fun project too.  And it was cheaper than buying a bike, gutting it and rebuilding it as I might have liked.  None of this responds to the question you didn't answer though.  Was just curious if you'd considered starting with a set of the available crankcases that are options and building your motor from the components you wanted as opposed to breaking down an existing new motor and having the redundancies?  Wondered if there was a cost advantage (either way) and/or how it might have impacted the build options.

Didn't seem an untoward question....

No problem with the sound but the performance hit bothers me. Not my build though and looking forward to seeing the numbers and curves when it's all said and done. Ask one of the tuners on this forum how much they think of those mufflers  8)

The cost of the 120R made more sense than ripping my 110 apart and re-building. I will be able to sell the 110 and recoup some of the cost of the 120R. As for the CFR mufflers, I have heard the same negative comments about the Rinehart true duals that I have ran on the bike since new. With a tuner that knows what he is doing anything can be tuned. Plus if you look at my bike you will see that I like to be unique. Hence the CVO Road King that I converted into a Road Glide.

Wasn't thinking about gutting the 110 and building from there.  It would always be worth a lot more as a complete assembly than it ever would as a bunch of disassembled bits.  Was wondering about the comparison between the 120 and its follow on build expenses versus buying a set of new crankcases (in the P&A or SE book) then buying the other bits just once and building out from there.

Look forward to seeing how the ex works out for overall numbers and curve. A tuner cannot correct poor parts. History has shown the mufflers are a poor performance part. Myself as well have tuned several sets all turned out like what others saw as well. Again looking forward to seeing how it works out.  :nixweiss:

ain't this some chit , get  a new motor and have to take it apart to fix it before even running it,... only Harley could come up with such junk, why not just built  the engine from scratch, why wouldn't Harley have  a  crank that would hold up??? :nixweiss:

Buying a Harley is like buying a Mercedes, very nice when it's brand new. Always get that full warranty, enjoy for a little while and unload the f%&@er as soon as that warranty is up before it brakes the bank and takes a total schit.  Or do what we do, get the cards out.

Simple reason.   Harley gives many a great deal to bitch about among whom are many self actualized and aware enough to be unwilling to meakly accept it no matter how much they still prefer the bikes over other options.

We bitch about our Harley's because we've bought and paid for that right!  It's just because we are so disappointed in a company, that with a little bit of effort could be turning out some engineering that would rank as high as the looks.  It just seems to me that they don't care about the poor quality.  It's like having a child that constantly f#cks up, you just wish for them to be better.  They're are the ones that would benefit in the long run.

I don't understand why you would buy a new big inch motor then completely rebuild it and loose your warranty. Wouldn't it be better to have one custom built from the start?

I can't understand HD knowing there's a weak crank, will continue to sell that engine!!, I mean why not just start welding them after they found a few are bad ones, it woundn't cost any more,, let alone buying one and then have  to fix  it before running it, just build one from the crank up!! if folks stopped buying them they would address the problem,  :nixweiss:

I can't understand HD knowing there's a weak crank, will continue to sell that engine!!, I mean why not just start welding them after they found a few are bad ones, it woundn't cost any more,, let alone buying one and then have  to fix  it before running it, just build one from the crank up!! if folks stopped buying them they would address the problem,  :nixweiss:

Does the 120r motor have a "weak crank"?  I think those who are welding the crank in their brand new 120r motors are looking for added insurance against a potential problem that may never happen.  I don't personally know of a single 120r crank failure.  I've "read on the internet" of one or two 120r crank failures, but not on a stock 120r motor.

My 120r motor is far from stock, and has accumulated over 15K miles - some of those miles were pretty harsh - and my crank runout is exactly what it was brand new - about .0008.

I don't understand why you would buy a new big inch motor then completely rebuild it and loose your warranty. Wouldn't it be better to have one custom built from the start?

The "why buy it and rebuild it" versus buying a set of crankcases and building what you want to begin with has come up before.  Answers have varied.  Warranty isn't a consideration though.  The 120R does not come with a warranty.  Zero, zilch, nada warranty right out of the box.

That must be a smooth motor with that runout. :2vrolijk_21:

I did not read anywhere that he had a issue with the crank. Let the OP post up why he did what he did.  The crank in stock form would have been fine.

What's happening with your build? Is it running yet?  Any snags? Any Picks? Any burn outs? Any dino charts?

The motor will not be going into the bike until mid January for a couple reasons. The independent mechanic doing the work is extremely busy and also it is mid winter up here (we have received more than 3 ft of snow so far) and there is no rush. I will not have any dyno numbers until the snow is gone in April.

Just curious, who is the independent doing the engine build.

Just like you I shovelled two days of snow out of my driveway today, in Calgary the wind piled the drifts quite high.

geezerglide,

Hillbilly Cycle in Caroline, AB. He used to do all the engine/dyno work at Gasoline Alley HD in Red Deer. Went on his own about a year ago.

No. Doug has his own shop in Innisfail. This is Darren. Also known as Hillbilly.

Now I remember Darren (Hillbilly) running the Dyno at Gasoline Alley, I actually saw him also at the Red Deer Swap Meet. Do you know Steve Schultz (Rig Manager for Shell) from Red Deer, also on this website as BUNGY?
