Infrared temp gauge suggestions
« on: February 11, 2008, 06:00:41 PM »

Chief and sandubar have suggested the hand held Raytek ST Pro temp gauge. Anyone else like to add any alternative suggestions before I pull the trigger? Thanks

Howie

OK.........I'm not sure I'm fully "read-in" on this, but I don't know of any other "IR temp guages" other than the handheld ones.  This reads like something to be installed on the bike............nah..........can't be.  Anyway..............

Was at Fry's Electronics near Cumming, GA not long ago and ran into a package deal from Fluke.  Multimeter and IR temp gun for $225.  I'm really wishin' I hadn't been such a cheap bastard.  Shoulda bought it, 'cause I can't find that deal elsewhere.  I'll pick it up next month if they're still running it.

I just bought a $75 infra heat pistol for the shop (local buy).  Works good, don't know if you have to purchase a $200 one to check head temperatures.

What :nixweiss: ?

You guys still messing with where to point a pyrometer?  Why not just mount a little cylinder head temp gauge?

Dakota Digital makes several small (or even smaller) cylinder head temp gauges that could be mounted in a little chrome pod on the handlebar.  One is a standard size and could replace the rain gauge in the dash.

What would make them usable for this application is that the stock cylinder head temp sender in the front head would be untouched.  The Dakota Digital head temp gauges use a sending unit that simply bolts down to a head bolt.  So you could put it on the rear head in one of those middle head bolts and no one would ever even know it was there.  Or it could be installed a bit easier on one of the outboard headbolts.

You guys have options!

And what, pray tell, do ya'll plan on doing when you see it running too hot? :nixweiss:

You've already done A/C, pipes, ECM remapping, and maybe headwork and cams. If it's too hot, then what. I just don't really want to know. If the oil temp's too hot, shut the bike down. I don't really think I want to know much more about it!!! ???

Smoke 'em til the wheels fall off!!! :jalapeno: :jalapeno: :jalapeno:

You could still be in good shape.  That Dakotal Digital sending unit only needs a... ummm... er....  a "contact patch."  :huepfenlol2: :2vrolijk_21: :drink:

(and just think of all the ways to mount the gauge!)

Hoist actually has a good point.  What does it matter how hot the heads are running.  It's no different than those stupid temp. oil dipsticks.  If it's running too hot or what you believe to be too hot you can't change it anyway.  I for one would rather not though although I do have the 103 which runs cooler.  If you don't know how hot it's running you don't have to worry yourself about it.  Get the extended warranty.

I had a VW bug years ago. I was driving along about 65 MPH when all of a sudden the engine locks up, and I slide to a screeching halt. Just as it stopped, and all the smoke boiled out of engine, the "Check Engine Light" came on. Evidently VW's won't run w/o smoke. I carried it to the shop and they installed some new smoke, and I was ready to roll again.

Whenever JD and I are talking about the site and Howie...I refer to the "good" Howie and the "bad" Howie. Now, even I'm confused which is which? Oh..I know. Hair Howie and Bald Howie!
Or it could be the 1st Howie and the 2nd Howie......har!  spyder

I used to wonder about this, back in the day I had that VW. I'd imagine traveling at a rather high rate of speed, say...the speed of light..in outspace, backwards. If I flipped my headlights on, would they shine, or just glow? One night I had it figured out, but when I awoke the next morning, I realized I really didn't have it figured out.

My all time best VW story goes wayyy back in the day. To cure boredom during the long Upstate NY winter we would take my buddies bug down the biggest hill we could find either during or right after some lake effect snow when the roads were covered. We'd run that bug down as fast as we could hit the parking brake and that baby would spin like a top, bouncing form side to side off the snow banks.  :nixweiss: Hey what do you want it was a lifetime ago  :huepfenjump3:   :drink:

To get back to the ORIGINAL subject!

If I get an infrared temp gauge what are the "normal" temps for a 110?  I see many postings comparing them to stock engines, comparing those with a race tuner to those without, etc.  Is there any agreement regarding a particular temp that the bike simply should never exceed?   What is the most critical, oil temp, head temp, exhaust temp, etc?

Thanks!

In short, No. No one has any idea. Everytime we figure out the hottest an engine can run, Harley produces one that runs hotter. We went though all of this in April / May of last year and never came up with a definitive, or even ball park, answer.

Has anyone previously or does it make sense to start a "temp poll" based on like model bikes and engine sizes? Anyway possible it would be useful as a crude benchmark? Or is my FNG shining thru??  :confused5:

I have a Craftsman infrared temp gauge that I use for checking: head temps, water temps, air temps....you name it and it has been very reliable. Temp difference from that under $100 piece of equipment and the $2500 I have is less than .5 degrees. Not too bad :2vrolijk_21:

I'd like to get one, mostly to see the difference that changes make in the motor and exhaust temps.

As for head temps, there was an article in American Cycle about some Namz leads that attach to the O2 sensors that trick the ECM to richen up the fuel ratio and help cool the motor. The original temp of the heads after 12 min of running was 260, after the installation it was 243.

1220.58 °F is the melting point of aluminum.  If your CVO temperature approaches that I suggest you turn off your engine immediately!   :P

I wonder at what point the synthetic oil will break down (or ignite).  Probably a lot lower than 1200 °F  ;)
