As far as the sound managed systems go, price is one thing (holey chit)
Quite. As big, if not bigger, than any of the MoCo's ripoffs.
but how do they perform? If it was a system that delivers great performance and sound good, it may well be worth the crazy sum we are talking here. Again, input here welcome.
Not sure how they perform, though I do wonder what your bike thinks its tune should be when they are sometimes restricted, sometimes not. But sounds good? I've only heard the Kess-tech ones, and they sound krap to me. Of course, exhaust sound being "good" is very subjective, so others may think the loud coarse rasp they make is good to them. I don't - I like my exhaust to be rich and mellow, and I have never heard any muffler that sounds better in that respect than the old 65115-98B Screamin' Eagle Performance Muffler. Long since obsolete (though I think you can buy a clone one still), and I had to spend a while seeking out some NOS ones for my current bike. I've tried plenty others, and to my ears V&H don't sound good either. As for Rineharts...... well let's just say no mufflers would be just as quiet, and just as good a sound. Also they killed low-end torque on my bike. I'd rather have standard mufflers than the Kess-tech.
I have no idea what you guys are talking about with the components used on the HDI? bikes. Can some one fill in the gaps?
Just ahead of the right hand muffler on HDI bikes is (was??? Dunno if they are still fitted) a sort of flap that fills the exhaust pipe. Controlled by the ECU, via a motor that extends/retracts a cable, mounted on the frame, to turn the shaft of the valve, thus opening and closing it, and regulating the noise. See pic below.
