so do so, the market is waiting for you  ;)

Not convinced, Hans.  I don't know a single owner who has been stupid enough to pay the price for the Kess-tech stuff, never mind anything cheaper.  If it got to be a real problem, people would find their own way round it.

Think how simple it would be though, to use that flapper valve (powered by the same motor & cable) that controls them on the HDI bikes) inside a muffler to divert the gasses through a baffle for quietness - one switch and the flapper opens and the gasses go through the less restrictive path again.  Not exactly rocket science!

over here approximately 50% live with OEM or "modified" OEM pipes, 20% (mostly older bikes) have SE or other straight illegal pipes but 30% (and growing) got ESM or manually adjustables.

Nobody in his right senses would even think of riding through Munich or Berlin with supertrapp or the like  ::)

2011 our dealer sold 20% of all new bikes with ESM pipes (Kess or Jekyll&Hyde and 20% manually adjustables from Kess,  Penzl or AMC).

And there are still no noise controls locally - but people just don't want to get victimized in neigbouring Bavaria just because of their pipes.

Plainly I'm not in my right senses, then, as I've spent a happy couple of days in Berlin with my Screamin' Eagle mufflers!  Munich, however, I know to avoid.  ;)

police usually is quite lenient with our allies - but not with residents  ;)

Munich, Nuremberg, Berlin and Frankfurt are specially infamous, but you may get into trouble even at small rallies in the countryside.

Great input guys, thanks. The stock pipes are now fitted all ready for the test on Monday. :(

It's probabaly best i dont put the Bassani's back on, so its decision time. While wanting my bike to perform well, i need a set up that is not too far over legal that wont arrouse to much ire of the law.

I know the D & D lowcat fits my bike but not sure on sound levels with the various baffles available, input here welcome.

As far as the sound managed systems go, price is one thing (holey chit) but how do they perform? If it was a system that delivers great performance and sound good, it may well be worth the crazy sum we are talking here. Again, input here welcome.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about with the components used on the HDI? bikes. Can some one fill in the gaps?

Quite. As big, if not bigger, than any of the MoCo's ripoffs.

but how do they perform? If it was a system that delivers great performance and sound good, it may well be worth the crazy sum we are talking here. Again, input here welcome.

Not sure how they perform, though I do wonder what your bike thinks its tune should be when they are sometimes restricted, sometimes not. But sounds good?  I've only heard the Kess-tech ones, and they sound krap to me.  Of course, exhaust sound being "good" is very subjective, so others may think the loud coarse rasp they make is good to them.  I don't - I like my exhaust to be rich and mellow, and I have never heard any muffler that sounds better in that respect than the old 65115-98B Screamin' Eagle Performance Muffler.  Long since obsolete (though I think you can buy a clone one still), and I had to spend a while seeking out some NOS ones for my current bike.  I've tried plenty others, and to my ears V&H don't sound good either.  As for Rineharts...... well let's just say no mufflers would be just as quiet, and just as good a sound.  Also they killed low-end torque on my bike.  I'd rather have standard mufflers than the Kess-tech.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about with the components used on the HDI? bikes. Can some one fill in the gaps?

Just ahead of the right hand muffler on HDI bikes is (was??? Dunno if they are still fitted) a sort of flap that fills the exhaust pipe.  Controlled by the ECU, via a motor that extends/retracts a cable, mounted on the frame, to turn the shaft of the valve, thus opening and closing it, and regulating the noise.  See pic below.

same sort of flap works behind the AC too.

The Kess ESM2 has a very good sound - for my taste - and so does the Jekyll & Hide. Performance is said to be better with Jekyll & Hide but the Kess ESM2 is just a little to new to know for certain. As the pipes close only at specific rpms and for a very short time there is no real problem with the mapping - and normally you ride them with ESM off anyway and only engage ESM when you see an officer  ;)

Thanks to Eqcons for the info there.  Ok, the bike has been set back to stock as far as the exhaust goes and tested today. So what happens is they refer to some spec sheet that says the model should have a sound output of 96db, they then add 5db (apparently only for Harleys???), so could go up to 101db. Test result was 96db, so its a pass so far and i have 5 db up my sleeve, however, i may still get defected because i have a heavy breather AC pod. Apparently these too are not legal??. Paperwork was noted as "Low Induction noise".

Photo's were taken and results will be checked by some beauracrat pube somewhere. So they now have pics of my bikes set up, to compare for future possible test inspections if i get pulled over again.

So i now wait 21 days to see if i get a defect for the AC. >:(

And some people wonder why I take an annual ride through the USA most years. I've never had a drama there ever.

Not really sure. I don't know anyone who has come this way lately. I'm sure there is a sizable amount of red tape. I remember my company purchased a work permit for me when I was in Sydney working at Kellogg's. I think it was a six month permit. I don't know what we have here in the USA. Face
