Rolled into Willits for a gas stop and a break.

Jeff's new Ultra Classic Limited in the foreground (red & black).....John's new Ultra Classic Limited in the background (purple and black).  I'm sure that the MoCo has some fancy, fangle, dangle name for these colors. :nixweiss:

Jeff went on his first ride out of town (and on the freeway) on his 09 SE Springer about three weeks ago.  He's one of those rare riders that just took to riding right away.......he hung right with us in the mountains.  A week before this ride he PM'd me to tell me that he'd just taken his bike in for it's first service and made the mistake of taking a 2011 Ultra Classic Limited for a test ride.  He's now the proud owner of two new bikes! :2vrolijk_21:

Finally made it to Avenue of The Giants (the redwoods).  And Jeff using that new bike for his lunch wagon, office and mode of transportation all in one.  Something tells me the Springer will be getting less and less use.

John and his new Limited.

It's about 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon here......the forest is so thick that it's dark in there.  We're on the edge of the woods here but you can get back in there where you need a headlight.

Soon we were soaking wet from the fog, miserable and on a very, very nasty road.

We stayed in Fortuna Best Western that night.  I would recommend it to anybody in the area.  Had a great tri-tip dinner right around the corner and laid in.

The next morning some slept in while the rest of us got up and road to Eureka for breakfast at the Samoa Cookhouse (Samoa was the last company owned town in America).

Have some picture I can post as well, will have to dig them up first.  However, here is the GPS track of the trip.

Second Group Ride
Jeff has created a track with MotionX-GPS HD on the iPad
Date:Nov 13, 2010 7:48 am
Distance:294 miles
Elapsed Time:7:03:10
Avg. Speed:41.7 mph
Max. Speed:97.0 mph
Avg. Pace:01' 26" per mile

Total Ascent (ft):11,709
Total Descent (ft):11,675
Max Pos Gradient:17.9%
Max Neg Gradient:-2.4%

Looks like we hit a max altitude of about 2400 ft., all I got is a line graph.

Also, it was actually 325 Miles, missed recording 31 Miles of one of the most interesting and hard roads I've ridden yet. Bull Creek Flats Rd which turned into Mattole Rd (which lead to the coastline). You can identify where the 31 missing miles are by the break in the red line.

Avg. Pace:01' 16" per mile

Total Ascent (ft):8,927
Total Descent (ft):8,886

Had to put a kickstand spring back on Terrie's bike. Rope, Needle Nose Vice Grips, Screwdriver and technique.

Question is was it the right technique?

Since 1890, a lumber camp style restaurant serving eggs, sausage, bacon, bisquits, gravy, hash browns, pancakes, french toast, orange juice, coffee. All served family style as much as you can eat.

Some people get up and get going early and aren't going to sit around waiting all morning. Get more done that way!

--- From Eureka: An Architectural View

William Carson Mansion

One of the most written about, and photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps in the United States, the William Carson Mansion epitomizes the range of possibilities for eclectic design expression that created a peculiarly American style of architecture.  Derived from many sources, but unique enough to represent none predominately, this much discussed and debated property stands today in virtually the same condition as when first constructed.  The designers, Samuel and Joseph Newsom, were well respected San Francisco architects who heartily embraced the concept of the "picturesque", a quality that continues to fascinate all who see the Carson Mansion's intricately composed interiors and exteriors.
Prominently sited [143 M Street], the extensive grounds provide a substantial pedestal for this sculptured edifice.  Eye-seeking and shadow-producing surfaces showcase the use of wood as a building material. This three-dimensional "pattern-book" took over one hundred men over two years to construct.  Its influence on the design of subsequent buildings in Eureka is readily apparent even today.  In addition to the abundant use of redwood, Mr. Carson imported 97,000 feet of primavera or "white mahogany" from Central America, along with other woods and onyx from the Philippines, East India, and Mexico.  The elaborate interiors include stained glass, plasterwork, and carved ornaments in exotic woods.

The Carson Mansion was owned by the descendents of William Carson until 1950, when it was sold to the Ingomar Club.

--- From Eureka: An Architectural View

Note: The Ingomar Club does not conduct public tours.

Arriving just outside of Red Bluff. The end of our CA-36 ride. I-5 then takes us South and home.

What an adventure. The wet foggy slickened curves had me skittish about the skittle skidding out. The winding roads were awesome. My cameras not working correctly so missed some great shots, and messed up some of the 500 or so I took. But I did get some great shots that I hope reminded the other riders of the trip.

And I got to explore new areas. I've lived in California for half of my life and I always find something amazing around the next bend or over the crest of the next hill. Dry golden rolling oak covered hills, vineyards growing in the valleys, mountain foothills with flowing rivers, giant redwoods naturally dark and damp, rocky coastlines of the cold pacific waters that naturally creates the foggy drizzle, the low hanging clouds where the weather patterns converge at the peaks of the coastal mountain ranges, the bright blue sky over the inland valley with the snow covered Sierras in the far distant skyline. No desert this trip but it is always there for tomorrow.

It was great to ride with John, Jeff, Andy, Lonnie, JC, Terrie, and Dave. Some pushing some pulling some flowing along. Andy snores and JC talks in his sleep.  ;D

JC and Terrie, great people who are awesome riders and lead fun rides. Thanks for the weekend, I'm glad I got to do the tour. One of the things I like about JC is his inquiring about how I like the areas and the rides. Then he'll reply "If you liked the winding roads here then you'll really like the roads up in ??? county and the scenery there." then he'll ask if I've ever done it and then say "We'll have to do that." Terrie will then say "Or what about place B instead because of ..... and we'll say yeah" And we will do that......

Lots to see in the U.S.A. just got to get out and do it.

Karen- I was planning on taking roadglide cause i had 9,300 miles on rear tire( most mile i,ve ever gotten on tire, i,m changing tires at 7k most all the time) On friday i had my bike at my office. Checked out rear  tire and i was into the wear bars so at noon i rolled my bike out of my office and did a burn out down the block so as to give the hi tect workers ,in the new high rise building across the street a little smoke and burnt rubber smell for there lunch break.  The 04 O/B was up with best rubber and fresh oil change. Glad  i didn,t take roadglide would have fallen down on the Lost HY.   For those wanting to know the lost HY can stay Lost

Definitely had a clinch factor in the high numbers especially the wet cattle guard in the curves. Glad I was solo as Carole can manage to claw me right through the leather. Wet winding roads, great experience but not my preference either.
