Title: Pre HK radio repair
Post by: 2018_FLTRXSE on June 14, 2019, 06:20:31 PM
So, without dredging up pre 2007 threads (Which was all I could find... )

My recently acquired 01 Road Glide seems to have an issue with the audio system. Some of which might be related to the aftermarket stuff that's been added to it.

I recently had the outer fairing off installing a daymaker LED setup. (Yes the Daymaker fits even though it is described for 04-later)

But upon reinstallation of the fairing I pushed a little too hard and heard the omnious crack of the faceplate...  :soapbox:

Finding the Specific OEM radio is near impossible. So I was fortunate enough to locate another near perfect OE radio (base radio with cassette) that is supposed to be in working order.

So I can use it as a donor... but I would rather leave it to a professional to either simply switch the faceplate and resolve the intermittent cutting out issues I am having.

Issues:

1) Intermittent cutouts (It seems that the higher the volume, the more likely the radio is to cutout) I'm not sure if this is related to the aftermarket low-high signal converter feeding the ridiculously large amp in the right saddlebag.

2) No CD player read (There is an aftermarket add-on CD controller that appears to be dummying up  the handlebar controls, I may remove it and see if it works, the CD changer shuttles the discs in and out as if is trying to read them but apparently cannot read the discs for some reason)

3) The Cassette player actually works... but it tries to shuttle in the cassette and out, and in and out if there is no cassette (reads code 37 if no cassette in it) it works absolutely fine with it in place, it just doesn't like to be without one.

Anyone know if there is still a vendor who still repairs these?

Radio Sound says they no longer repair HD radios.

Greg,

Iron Cross was my first thought outside of Radio Sound, (Who no longer repairs RS era radios)

But all their references all indicate HK series units.

I suppose only a telephone call with a 5 or 6 hour time difference will answer my question(s)

Thanks.

Could be things have changed of course.  Maybe four years ago-ish Iron Cross told me then only worked on the HK radios.

While poking around on the internet I found a place called HI Tech Electronics that advertise they repair all kinds of OEM radios, and as I scrolled through their drop-down menu, HD came up, so I said what the heck... and sent in an inquiry.

The reply was disappointing, but not unexpected.

They don't either.

My search continues... but in the meantime the radio stayed on the entire trip to work today...  :nixweiss: (Albeit my trip is only 25 minuets, I'll take it)

Maybe it KNOWS its days are numbered?

I'd really like to be able to keep the disc changer and the OE radio just for old times sake and to say EVERYTHING works as it should but the more I think about it a marine unit would give me better sound quality, bluetooth and more modern amenities...

I may turn to the dark side... and they arent very expensive if you are DIY guy.

Lets see how pissed off I get with it this weekend.  :huepfenlol2:
