Title: Bushtec Maintenance
Post by: charles05663 on March 03, 2016, 07:51:40 PM
I picked up a Bushtec last year and it has been sitting in the garage as I did not have much of a chance to ride last year.  It had been sitting for 10 years prior to me picking it up.

My question is, what type of maintenance should I plan on doing before I put it into use?  Once it is off and running, what should I do to keep it maintained?

I will also be looking for a hitch for my 2009 SERG.

The trailer is blue (I heard blue was the fastest) so I worried that it will be too fast for my Yellow SERG.

What year is your trailer?

Look at the wheel bearings and the tires before putting a load in it.

JC is right you also need to lube all the sliding chassis components. I lube them with super lube and pump the shocks up and down several times to make sure that everything is moving as it should.  Grease the fittings on the swivel and heim joint too. Make sure you carry spare bearings with you on your trips and a tube for the just in case situations.

My recommendation on a hitch would be the Bushtec V3. V3 is built for the 09 SERG and is a hidden hitch with removable reciever. Takes about an hour to hour and a half to install.

I recently ordered new tires and tubes and had a tire shop mount the tires.  I asked about balancing and they said the don't have the tools to do that.

I called the local Harley dealer and he did not know what a Bushtec was and told me that they really only stick to Harley tires.  He said I can bring them down but I am not confident.

How is everyone balancing their tires?

I don't think Bushtec balances the wheels.  Never had any weights either when buying trailer new or after sending wheels to them for new tires.  Never had any problem at all.

I had Bushtec out new tires and tubes on my polished wheels and they balanced them.  The old tires and wheels were balanced as well with stick on weights on the back side. It may be a thing that some are close enough they get no weights not sure.  I have also put regular 4 ply motorcycle tires on some and never balanced them and went thousands of miles with no issues.  Bushtec is the only place I had tires put on that balanced them.

Mine definitely had no wheel weights.  Maybe they were close enough to not need them or maybe they came off.   :'(  Don't know.  But I cleaned and polished those high end wheels enough that if they'd had weights I'd have noticed.

Like you I always send wheels back to Bushtec for tires and bearings.  I've had several indies that mount motorcycle tires tell me they are a bear to change and would not do it.

When I ordered replacement tires, I ordered an a spare tire.  The spare tire did not have any weights on it.

When reading the owners manual, they do mention balancing the tires.

Don't worry about the trailer being too fast for your bike.  They make them special so they magically match the speed of your bike under any circumstances!
There were no wheel weights on mine, and to be honest, I can't really see the need for them.
Get some of that 3M oil and if you need directions on where to oil the chassis underneath, PM me and I'll send you a picture.
