Title: Sedona, AZ Get Together.
Post by: Ironhorse on May 05, 2019, 09:53:26 AM
I left Sunnyvale on Friday the 3rd, heading to Barstow to hook up with GoldWing John. I wasted two hours at Bakersfield HD dealing with a blown fuse and broken horn mount.

On the way through the Tehacepie passes I stopped at the windmill farm. I hope I don’t get windmill cancer.

John and I had dinner, slept through the passing trains, and got an early start on Saturday the 4th. We stopped once in Needles to buy some of the most expensive gas in the states.

We stopped in Seligman, AZ for lunch and ate at the Road Kill Cafe. John had an elk burger, and I had the fried chicken who didn’t cross the road. Seligman is popular with European tourists on bikes as it represents a piece of American history. Folks fleeing the depression westward.

We stopped at Grand Canyon HD to buy my cousin Alan a shirt. Then it was off to Sedona.

We checked into the hotel and cooled off. I reached out to three other attendees to finalize rides plans for Sunday to Jerome, Prescott, and Montezuma Well. Later we picked up my wife Denise at the airport, rode back to town, and had dinner.

Sunday May the 5th.

We all met up at 0930. With us was Jim (CatEye) and Dan. Both get kudos for riding the furthest, Dan for coming from Syracuse, NY, and Jim from Virginia. The rider who came the furthest was the one we called “The Most Imteresting Man In The World”, Manhem, or “Hemi”. He and his daughter Maya are from Israel and were out on their 2013 GoldWing when they met Jim and Dan. Hemi owns many bikes all over the world. He keeps his GoldWing in San Francisco, has other bikes in London, Tel Avive, and other parts of Europe. So off we went.

First stop Jerome, AZ

Jerome is an old mining town that was known for its brothels and bars. At one time it boasted the most bars and brothels per capita any where in the US. Today it’s a riders destination full of eateries, shops and curios.

Maya and Denise.

Where as Jerome was mining country, Prescott is ranch country. All along the way we saw cattle and horses. The town square has been the setting for several movies, including the 70s cult classic “Billy Jack”.

Being Cinco de Mayo we went to Casa Sanchez for Mexican food.

I’m not sure why some photos are upside down, and working only with my phone and iPad I’m not sure I can figure it out. If any of the admins can flip them over I’d be grateful.

We gassed up and were joined by Phillipe (AdonF!) and rode out to Montezumas Well. Now part of the National Park Service The well is a still an active functional spring that served the native Americans in this desert climate.

We got there at closing, but my “Negotiating Skills” convinced them to keep it open for this one picture.

John, Phillippe, Maya, Hemi, Mark, Denise, and Jim.

Dan chose not to “sprint” up the 33 steps to the top of the rim to take this picture.

We had an early dinner at the Cameron Trading Post and said good bye to Hemi and Maya. They are off to other canyons, then Vegas, then San Francisco and back to Israel. On the way back to Sedona Phillipe peeled off and continued home to Tempe.

It was great making new riding friends.

Mark when looking at photos on your phone they all appear upright.  However, the true "orientation" of your phone camera is landscape, not portrait.  If you're going to post photos, do not hold your phone up and down.  Instead, turn the top of your phone to the left (horizontal) in landscape view.  Then all of your photos will post upright.

NOTE:  If you turn the top of your phone to the right, your photo will post upside down.

Being the down day I took the opportunity to have some repairs done on the bike at a local shop. When I pulled into Bakersfield,CA a few days earlier I heard a clanking sound. I looked down and saw the horn and fan assy shaking loosely on the side of the engine. The rubber isolator had torn.

So I went by Bakersfield HD and bought a replacement, a $5 part. In the parking lot I took off the horn and fans and proceeded to remove the old isolator,...or so I thought. Couldn’t do it. Even with large channel locks from the shop, I couldn’t get it off. So I tossed the horn and fans into the saddlebag and rode off without them.

Red Rock Motorcycles in Sedona is top notch, they took me in without an appointment.

Derrick, the tech who worked on my bike is top notch too. He was also unable to remove it, so he proceeded to remove the bracket from the engine.

With the bracket off he locked it in a vise he still couldn’t get it off even with large vise grips. So he took a grinder and cleaned off all the rubber down to bare metal. Then he welded a long bar on it and got it off using the welded leverage.

He spent an hour working on it, and charged me half an hour of labor. Sixty-one dollars later I was on the road.

Back at the hotel we dined at The Elote, the number two rated restaurant in the country. And watched a stunning sunset.

Those blue skies and puffy white clouds gave way to heavy dark grey skies as we rolled out of Flagstaff. The trip down I-40 became wet. By the time we hit Needles it was clear and 88 degrees. That's about the coolest I can recall Needles being when I pass through. John and I spent the night in Barstow, before heading home on Sunday.

I stand corrected,...the most expensive gas was NOT in Needles, but in King City, off the 101.

I made it home at little after 4pm. The bike was filthy, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. All in all another great trip.

Here are some useless stats.

Longest day: Show Low to Barstow, 490 miles.
Shortest Day: Sedona to Grand Canyon and back, 220 miles.

Best fuel consumption: 44mpgs Sedona to Grand Canyon to Cameron. Running at posted speed limits at elevation.
Worst fuel consumption: 31mpgs Needles to Barstow. Running 90/95mph across the desert floor.

Best meal: Dinner at the Elote in Sedona.
Worst meal: Lunch at Hanagan Meadow.

Thanks for letting me share this with you, thanks to all the new friends I made this trip.

Mark
