Title: Well Crap --- Don't Even Have to Look
Post by: Twolanerider on June 15, 2020, 01:46:25 PM
The FXR that had set for a very long time before getting to me has been used more since it got here a couple years ago.  Still not ridden heavily but at least used regularly now.  It's been good too.  Once all the maintenance necessary to bring it out of hibernation was done it's been problem-free.

Rode it again this morning for an hour and a half.  Just walked past it in the garage and saw a smeared oil drop on the transmission top cover.  Don't even have to look close.  Damned Evo rocker boxes!  :huepfenlol2:

And, of course, it's the back one.

If it stays as light as it is it'll also be a winter chore at this point :2vrolijk_21: .

If you changed to the right brand of oil that would've never happened.  Just sayin'........

No, if I look at it from the left side of the bike it is the right hand cylinder that's leaking so that can't be it!

Gawd, just had a thought.  Bet a lot (most?) of the brethren here never owned Evos (or Pans or Shovels, etc).

That's a sharp bike Gary.  Like that a lot.  My last two Evo were a Heritage and a Road King.  The Heritage was a pretty typical bike for me appearance was.  The Road King, for some reason, was never my friend and I just beat the crap out of it.  Serviced and rode, don't think I ever even wiped it off.  Definitely not treated nearly as well as yours was :2vrolijk_21: .

There!  That's what I'm talking about (in that other thread)!  A bike needs to just give up its name to you!

74 Ironhead XLCH - biggest POS I've ever owned.
82 Shovelhead Low Rider - best bike I ever owned.

Just realized that of all the bikes I've had over the years never had an Ironhead.  Had a rolling frame for awhile but never a whole bike.  Ironheads are kind of like my Idaho....

Had a 97 Fatboy with front rocker box issues. Finally figured it out. The lower rocker box had a small chrome bump on bottom side of corner. It was always difficult removing the front exhaust rock arm shaft when box was bolted to head. Put some sticky back sand paper on a flat inspection stone and sanded/lapped it back flat. Worked good after.
Probably a rare case but thought I'd throw it out there.

I loved that bike, but don't know if it was because it was really a great bike or because it was my first Harley. A little of both probably.

A version of your sanding method was my always my go-to for the too often slightly warped rocker boxes also.  Good flat surface (machinist's table, counter top, something that works) and some sticky sandpaper then slowly work the surface until it's flat.  I haven't told the FXR yet that it'll get sanded yet.  However.....

After noticing the rear leak I looked everything over even more closely and with a really good light.  Ever so slight leak on the back and a seep on the front.  Both could run for a long time but they'll get some winter maintenance this year.  Which led me too.....

Gawd we just can't leave stuff alone.  So I was thinking (those words rarely lead to anything cheap)....

Don, I says to myself, if you've got the top off both heads anyway you might as well.....

Well, you know where that's ending up..... :drink:

I love to ride, and having a motorcycle and working on it is also my hobby.
If you're passionate about your hobby, you will always be looking for ways to improve, modify, change looks, etc.

We sometimes look for an excuse to justify the money. As I've gotten older I now say, if you can afford it, do it. Sometimes you can by a little happiness.  :)

Amen.  I enjoy the tinkering almost as much if not as much as the riding.

I like to keep the bikes pretty stock though so it's important to pay attention to how I'm doing a lot though.

^full of chit that is ^

:D The only thing stock on your bikes is the air in the tires.

Uh... well.... ummm, they're; well.....   ok, the back wheel on the FXR is stock (but the belt pulley or the rear brakes next to it are not).  So one wheel out of six.  That is "mostly" stock ::) .

My 93 Fatboy (which I still have, though now sporting a 107 TC)  had a tendency to push oil out of the base gaskets.  Can't remember the name of the kit, but found one that you tapped the oil drain in the jug and threaded a spigot that would feed down in to the case.  Never really had trouble with the rocker boxes.  Damn soft cases and pulling studs, that's another story.

You're getting really in to these little details Dood.  One wheel, six wheels; it's all mostly wheels.  It's all good (and mostly stock)!

That's a very bad day right there.   Very bad day.  You ever used Time Serts to fix those?

Yep, did two of them.  Just wouldn't hold if you tried to put much or in my case apparently too much power in to it.  A friend who was a service manager at the local Harley store put a big Jim's motor in his 03 Roadglide so we shoehorned the TC in to the Fatboy.  After bringing it up to 95 ci. The crappy tensioner set up took out the timing chain on the way back from Daytona in 08.  I bought the Roadglide a month later and just got the Fatboy back on the road this year.  It's fun so far.  Hope to dyno it soon.  Not much for tuning on it.  Jets and timing curve.

Oh, the EVO is still sitting on a shelf in the garage.  Never even took it apart when the last stud went.  Had an oil and fuel soaked leg when I rode it home making one hell of a racket but it got me home.

That's a sucky way to end a ride and a motor.  I've been lucky.  Used Time Serts twice in pulled stud holes and both held up.  Or at least they help up for as long as I was aware of the repairs.

I'm really getting tired of you guys ridiculing my stock-ness (note, I said stock not stocky, assholes).  I choose to identify as stock.  Quit ridiculing my choices.  You're gonna hurt my feelings.

Now I'm gonna go out in the garage and plug the USB cable in to the FXR so I can dial in its ignition system a little more.

Stock is in the eye of the beholder, and that is very different than the eye of the beeholder.

Ok since you identify as stock, what will the stock market do for the rest of 2020?   My guess is stock will go up or down but not sideways.

That seems like you're doubting again.  At least I'm just using the USB right now and not hanging the GPS on the bar mount so I can play MP3 on the FXR.  That many three character combinations is a lot for a 1980s vintage motorcycle.

I've always liked the platform Van.  Even way back when they were as new as I could afford and the Harley no one else liked.  Of course then just rode and abused and never gave them a real extra thought other than they were good to ride.  Who knew they'd become a flavor of the month again 30 years later?
