Title: Thin oil causing ticking?
Post by: Scott7d on August 18, 2020, 02:08:48 PM
I have a 2020 CVO Road Glide, bike is a little over 4 months old with just shy of 20,000 miles. On a trip out west last week, I developed a lower end tick. This noise was only noticeable at lower RPM (~2200) and was loudest when shifting, particularly the short period of time when the clutch was pulled in. I could not hear it at cruising speeds/RPM.

The oil by the end of the trip easily had over 5000 miles since the last change. It was changed shortly before the trip, but the trip alone was almost 5000 miles. It did look dark and thin by the end of the ride. The powertrain warranty is voided due to a cam install and tune, but the tuner will help me investigate if a fresh oil change doesn't cure the problem.

Just curious if anyone else has had symptoms like this and if it ended up being anything major. My oil change will be done later this week.

Thanks!

So you still are running the oem lifters? That would be my guess my friend...

Lifters were replaced with new cam.

It should quiet down with the oil change.

These Harleys are notorious for clicking and ticking.  Some do it really bad, some not hardly at all.

All of mine did it really bad after a cam change and with all types of lifters and oils.  My 2014 Limited purrs like a kitten (on it's second compensator and third water pump) but still has the stock cam, with Comp Cams 850's lifters.  ~35k miles or so.

M8 motors have so much less noise than the twin came, especially much less lifter noise.

M8 motor lifters are quite, very little noise.

Could bee the oil being thin or a lifter out of adjustment.  Did you use the adjustable rocker arms?

Could honestly just be that you ran the oil to crap lol, if you're running regular dino oil after 3k its crap and breaks down, after you change the oil you should be alright

The compensator can mimic top end noises......I am having the 5 th compensator installed now.....the 4th, upon failure really sounds like top end failure.

So there is a problem that needs attention.  The bike is under warranty still, esp? Regardless oil is not the cause of the the problem.  Thicker higher viscosity oil may help mask the issue however.

The oil chance didn't fix the noise. Taking back to the tuner Monday. Noise is still only there at lower RPM and most prevelant when clutch is in.
