Title: Seems I am destined to have another HD.
Post by: spook120 on February 17, 2021, 05:40:28 PM
After whining in a previous thread about being done with riding, I am having a change of heart. Reason?  One of my best friends just died without warning. Life is truly short.  To my question to the collective about which bike to buy. I can get a new 2021 CVO SG for 39k. Or I can buy a 2021 two tone, blacked out, traction control regular SG for 29k. 10k difference which could be used for a 131 kit. Advice would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Have a friend that  wants to jump into an HD so I took him to a dealer last week to look at bikes and after considering (and not really liking the CVO colors) one of the Specials (Chrome) with some accessories and additions (about 3K) seems to be where he is leaning (cant get 131 in Cali yet) although he might purchase outside Cali. Being a fan of my 17' CVO even with its issues I agree with his decision.  The way they have strippped the CVO's (unless you love the paint) I think if I would be in the market now a Special with a 131 kit, CVO screen (SG) & hardware, heated grips, oil cooler fan, hidy antenna, seat back & rack, heel shifter and chrome fork tubes (No chrome fork tubes on the chrome package bike! WTH!) would be the direction I might go.  Also if the stock stereo isn't doing it for you, you can get a way better system aftermarket with out throwing away all the stock stuff & save space in the bags!

First off: I’m sorry for the loss of your friend; and yes you’re absolutely right “ life is too short “.   Back in the day a CVO would hold its value and retain a good portion of it years later.  Now it seems a couple years later and they take a really big hit...especially trading in at dealership.  At least this is what I’ve seen.  I would go for the Special and have lots of money left over.  A lot can be done with $10 grand.....

Good luck with your choice.

Thank you for your replies. I do like the 2021 orange and black paint on the CVO SG. That said, I am not sure if it is worth 10k. I have never ridden a 114 stock bike, as I have always modified my rides. The 2017 CVO was a stage 4 117 bike that produced 130/130 and did everything I wanted a bike to do. Truth is I am not sure I would be happy with a stock 117 just with recored mufflers. But then again even the 131 kit has to be to Mother Harleys tune which is a compromise also. A bit of a dilemma.  Thanks again.

I’m on the other side. I rather buy a cvo if I really like the color/finish. I quit modifying non cvo bikes many years ago to make them like a cvo.

I absolutely love the Sunset orange Sunset black fade paint job with the chrome.  Looks like a CVO should.  CVO does have quite a few nice extras like heated grips, a must for me, but also the power locks which I really like, lots more chrome, nicer wheels and so on.

I have a friend with the 131Kit on his 2020.  He really like it, and also has a highly built 126 M8.  Nice thing is his 131 is all H-D so he has full warranty.  Its a strong running bike, stronger than many built twin cams.

That said, an argument can be made for going either way.  What do you like more?  If power is more important go with a special and the 131.

It is a rather difficult decision. In a perfect world, or when the lottery comes through, I would do the 21 CVO with a 131 kit and not look back. But the idea if having 50k in a bike just goes against MY common sense.  The 21 sure is a pretty girl! But I am not sure standard 117 will pull the way I am used too on my bikes. Did I hear someone say BMW 1600???  Perish the thought!  Thanks for your insights.

It’s your money... I love the new Orange- black paint on the CVO bikes this year...Like in 2019 .. I remember seeing the CVO RG in the mako shark fade paint.. I bought it on the spot... I definitely ran out of common sense.. I have over 60G in it now and it’s at the shop getting The Kraus bar setup and chain conversion done...

Bikes and common sense don’t go together, lol! In 45+ years of riding, I’ve spent enough money on motorcycles to retire 2 times over.! I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Get what you want if you can make it work. The only thing that you can’t replace is time, it doesn’t come back.

Enjoy life while on the earth. As George Strait sang, “ I’ve never seen a hearse with a luggage rack”.

If you can ride, you should. If you cannot ride, you won’t.
