Title: Broken hinge on right switch cluster - resolved
Post by: VRODDAVE on April 03, 2021, 04:05:34 PM
Sorry if this is wrong location for this post

So, was installing some monkey bars and while reassembling right switch cluster broke the hinge where brake light switch is located. Does anyone know of any way to repair this instead of replacing at 200+ dollars. I'm sure I'm not the first to do this. Any help would be much appreciated

Dave

JB Weld for plastic.  Plasticweld.

Thanks Don,    I have been trying to glue some sample pieces of plastic today with various superglue 's, and none of them would hold enough to not break again easily.

Sounds like you have some experience with this stuff I will give it a try in the morning.
Thanks
Dave

JB Weld is good stuff.  Superglue is too brittle for what you're doing.  And it's just an adhesive of one piece to the other.  The PlasticWeld stuff is actually a bond.  Like a chemical weld.  If done right it makes the two pieces one again.  It's like sex but with plastic pieces doing it chemically!

Heading down to Ace Hardware right now to pick up the stuff.   Thanks again I'll let you know if it turns out.

I thought I would post photos of the repair which show how I managed to get the alinement correct while holding everything in place with my third and forth hand.    ::)

I used a small pair of hemostats holding the part that ratchets closed.   This aligned the nub in the hole on one side while I epoxied the broken side.  ( see photos )

I plan to give it 24h before checking and then applying another coat of epoxy for durability.   I'm thinking it looks promising.

I will post follow up tomorrow ,  fingers crossed .

Will keep finger crossed Dave.  So far looks promising.  If you got a good and clean coat in between the broken surfaces you stand a good chance of saving the part.  JB Weld is good stuff for these kinds of problems.  Good luck!

Final update, everything went back together perfectly today. Don's suggestion for JB plastic weld can be considered a tried true solution.

Now onto the next issues

Congrats Dave.  The little package of Plasticweld was way cheaper than a new switch assy :2vrolijk_21: .
