Title: Trip Counter counting backwards
Post by: PeterJ on April 16, 2021, 03:24:59 AM
I experienced this the other day after I picked up my 2019 FLHXSE from the dealership where it had been undergoing a 15k service.
Filled up at gas station beside dealership. Reset the Trip A Counter - counter reset to zero. Attempted to reset the Trip B Counter but counter wouldnt reset to zero - same number remained on display.
So rode out of gas station. While riding I reset Trip A Counter - OK went to zero, Attempted to reset Trip B Counter - wouldnt reset.
While riding I observed that the Trip A Counter was counting up correctly in decimal points of a mile whereas Trip B Counter was counting down in decimal points of a mile.
Once Trip B Counter counted down to Zero, it started to record miles correctly, in decimal points of a mile. Also I could now reset the counter and it would operate correctly and reset to zero.
Any one got any ideas what caused this to happen?
I have asked this of the dealership and no one has seen this occur and are investigating. So I thought I would pose the question here.  Thanks

Every time my speedometer was replaced under warranty, for moisture under the glass, it would do this.

Last time I attempted to get my speedo replaced for this issue, dealer said "We will not swap speedo out, leave bike in the sun and it will go away" I kid you not.

I've bought 9 CVOs and 2 RGS since 2009 from the same dealership. Guess that's why they always take care of me.

Looked and could not find the old thread but remember reading of a couple instances of an odometer briefly rolling backwards after a speedometer replacement.  If this continues after you've run a tank of gas through it call foul.  If it stops and behaves normally in short order there are some that really have done that before.

My local dealer has replaced several for me while bike's were under warranty.  Like Joe, I have bought several bikes from them.

Yes when speedometer is replaced troop B counts backwards to zero then normal after that.

Happened on my 2018 Tri Glide when they replaced the left hand switch pack under recall for not allowing start in gear. Learned it’s normal and after countdown from 10 miles to 0 it will reset as normal. Got my attention though when I noticed it.

About 1:30 in the morning this morning i was startled by the sharp sound of "something" cracking loudly then crashing to the floor.  Immediately followed by the unmistakable sound of water running.  In a completely unoccupied state the tank on one of the toilets had shattered.  Cleaned up the mess (fortunately caught quickly and shut off) last night and pulled the toilet.  Installed new one this morning shortly after Lowes opened.  New toilet flushed backwards for the first four flushes.  Must be a thing in industry anymore.

Thanks for all your comments, even the back flushing toilet cistern  :D

Dealership has advised that they carried out a firmware upgrade on the speedo during servicing, so the backwards counting must be something to do with that, though they have never witnessed this happening before. That counters run backwards from 10 to zero upon changing clocks would appear to be along the same lines as a firmware upgrade.
