Title: Aux IN with Zumo 590
Post by: rondolg on May 10, 2021, 11:21:58 AM
Good morning,

Wanted to verify one way or the other before I get started.  Is it possible to get GPS prompts from the Zumo 590 through the Aux IN cable?  I know the radio unit needs to be updated.  I'm confused as to whether the Road Tech Zumo 590 is the only model to send the interrupt signal.

Thanks very much.

It depends on the model bike you have, but yes, the RT z590 and RT z660 are set up with the correct 'interrupt' tone to trigger the HD head units.  I currently run a Road Tech zumo 590 on my FLHTK with it set  to interrupt for navigation commands.

Thanks Lew.  That what I thought and its being verified with information I'm finding.  The bike is a 2017 CVO limited.  I already have the cradle for my zumo 590 installed.  I found a refurbed RT 590 on ebay for 300$.  Doesn't come with the cradle.  Any idea if HD or Garmin did anything to the cradle on the RT version?

Thanks

Mine does.  Works without issue.

I bought a RT 590 and installed it on my 2017 CVO Limited.  It is now on my 2020 Tri-Glide.  And as said it can interrupt whatever source you have selected to send the nav prompts through.  But it must be a Road Tech version of the 590 - the standard 'Garmin' version will not work.  You must purchase the 3.5mm Auxilliary Input Kit, p/n 69200907.  If you have a CB on  your bike (and I think the 2017 CVO Limited did come with a CB) then the slot in the radio where the aux input kit would plug in is taken by the CB.  There are empty slots on the CB plug so you must de-pin the three wires from the plug on the aux input kit and then install them into the vacant slots on the CB plug.  You must have the radio flashed to update the 'Audio Inputs' to 'Both Audio AND Tone Detection.' Hope this helps.

Added:  I don't think the cradle is any different for the RT version.

Thanks for all the helpful information.  Just bought the refurbed RT 590 off of Ebay.  Will update after everthing is installed and configured.

Thanks again!

Update - I got the Aux Input (69200907) installed on the bike.  De-pinned and re-pinned into the CB connector.  Took it to the dealership and had them update the radio to "interrupt tone and add device to mode list".  The road tech 590 hasn't arrived yet but figured the Media player should work on my current Zumo 590.  Tried it and no sound.  Something hadn't set well with me when installing the Aux Input kit.  In step 4 of the instruction sheet it says to "Connect the open end of the audio jack jumper cable to the mating Zumo harness connector marked "Audio IN".  This isn't correct, it needs to be in the "Audio Out" connector on the Zumo harness.

After I corrected that I was able to play MP3 off the Zumo.  My question is, I'm only getting music out of the left speakers, I'm hearing static out of the right.  Is this correct?  I plugged my phone directly into the Aux Input and got stereo from the speakers.

Thanks.

Are you sure you got the right adapter?  Unless they've changed it to the 69200907, it should have been 69200610 "Audio Jack Jumper" you got.   And you should have full stereo at all times, both l &r speakers.

Thanks for the reply, I do have the right adapter.  Its working as advertised.  I'm thinking I might have a bad Audio Out connector on the garmin harness.

I wonder what the difference is between the two adapters?   Mine is definitely the other one.  Very possible that the problem is with the Zumo output jack socket - I had a problem with mine like that.

Edit - you do have the wrong adapter, but it makes no difference.  They are just the same, but yours is longer and has a grommet on it, as it's intended to go into the little cubby box on the dash where the USB connector is. The shorter one which I have, has no grommet, and the jack is intended to stay in the fairing, hence it being shorter.   Functionally identical.

I recommended the other adapter to him as that is what was recommended by someone on this forum when the Rushmore bikes came out with the new BoomBox and as you said they are functionally equivalent.  The shorter one is no longer available from H-D but I see several sources on eBay for NOS parts.

In any case it should work with audio from both L and R and since it did work correctly with his phone I too would suspect the gps.  But just for the heck of it might double check that the pins you insterted into the CB connector are fully seated.

Update.  So I pulled the cable a part on the mounting cradle and was definitely getting feedback on one of the speaker wires.  Must have been something wrong further up the line.  Ordered and installed new cradle and all is working now.  New cradle and refurbed RoadTech 590 and all is well.  Thanks to all for the help / info.
