Title: Front Motor Mount?
Post by: Wrongway on June 22, 2007, 09:09:52 AM
Had my first motor mount replaced at 7,000 miles and now the replacement is gone at 14,000 miles. Is there a better part than the stock H.D. piece? I would be better off if I spent some $$$ and got a GOOD piece.  Wrongway

Velva ride makes a good replacement part.

Mine failed around 3K if my memory is still intact.  Replacement is still good.  I think failure has to do with the way oil filter changes are performed.  When I do it, no oil gets on the bike at all.

Wrongway,
as mentioned above the velva mounts work great. have had for over 8k no problems. Here a few tips from another thread on install and site for purchase; After reading about failures of front motor mounts, I found the Velva Ride motor mount by VThunder.  I installed it this past week (with MObe's help) and have found that the motor still shakes as they are designed to do, but the shake is a lot more subdued.  The mirrors/handlebars are liveable now.  These mounts are polyurethane and not rubber.  They are made in 4 pieces (washer, spacer tube, 2 polyurethane rubber cones, and mounting plate).  I would recommend this mount thus far, don't know how long it will last.  My old mount was not cracked, just did not like the shake the bike had.  List price is $92.95..  They are available thru M&M Cycles under Drag Specialties part # DS-243609 and I bought from M&M for $74.64..  To use this mount there are 2 mod's required: 1) purchase two 1/4" longer bolts for thicker mounting plate and 2) you need to grind about 1/16 to 1/8" off oil cooler mounting plate to clear the new mount.  Both are easily done.

I also went with the velva front mount.  Easy enough to install with the mods mentioned above.  You will also need to jack up your motor a bit to get the old mount out if its still in one piece.  You might want to remove the rear gas tank bolt, and lift your tank up a bit (wood shim) just in case your rocker boxes are too close to the bottom of the tank.  Tru-track is also now selling an upgraded motor mount, I don't know if any one has used one yet.

my bike shakes when at idle but is very smooth on the go.
Do you think I have a mount starting to go?

The bike shakes a lot at idle with these mounts, even when they're not going. They shake much less at idle when the bike is perfectly tuned. Hoist! 8)

My 06 shakes a good bit more than my 05 at idle.  H-D starting using a new design motor mount sometime in the 06 model year.  The new design, while more durable, is also more rigid producing more shake than earlier models.
