Title: Oil leaking from engine case bolt #1 located left side between jugs.... Jack
Post by: Jack on June 22, 2007, 10:19:35 AM
Gentlemen,

Talked to a Copper Canyon owner June 21st, 767 miles on the clock,
Thunder in the Valley Zepka H-D Johnstown, Pa. (Rick from Annapolis,Md area)

He noticed a slight discoloration at the serial stamping area.
I noticed the same problem a few weeks ago.
I showed him the bolt that is leaking.
Mine has progressively gotten  worse 3000+ miles on clock.

Anyone with any quick fixes ?

                                      Thanks in Advance,

                                                Jack

Gentlemen,

Thunder in the Valley, Thursday Zepka H-D Johnstown.

Rick from the Anapolis, Md area with the Copper Canyon FXSTSSE 767 miles on the clock
was wondering where this soiled area on his engine block came from ?

ANSWER:  Yeah, same bolt !

Nice Bike Rick, sorry about bringing to your wife's attention that you have less tred on your
rear tire than I with 3200 on the clock. And I didn't buy this thing to save on gas.

                                                   Semper Fi,

My bike has the same oil leak. Dealer said to keep an eye on it, might clear up with more miles. His words not mine. He stated if it continues to leak they would pull the bolt and put sealant on it if it isn't broken. If that does'nt work they would have to break the motor down to repair. This is probably what needs to happen since this bolt has leaked since new. (2000 miles) This is not my only oil leak with this motor, the oil pressure sending unit was split and leaked badly and the bottom of the motor has oil all over it, have'nt figured out that one yet.

Well Vin-man,

I would think you could do the bolt sealent thing yourself if you had a torque wrench
and maybe some teflon water tap packing is what I am thinking.  I have the shop manual and have
reset the torque with little results.

Some people out there have washed off their bikes while hot w/engine shut down, as
your owners manual does not like this.  I know of one person who was sooo pissed off w/500 mi on
the clock, while refueling at the gas pump the auto shut-off didn't work and they did the wrong thing
at the bike wash.

                                                          Jack

I just cleaned off oil from the same spot on the block, and I only have about 175 miles on it! :o

I'll keep an eye on this thread for the fix, if it's easy, the last thing I want to do is take the bike into the dealer....... :2vrolijk_21:

Congrats on the bike DB, :drink:

Find yourself an HD dlrshp that services the most bikes for your shop needs.

Mine is not the one I purchased from.  I finally allowed this (great dlrshp) to
work on my bike and found a treasure of advantages on service.  They serviced
over 600 bikes last month.  What does that tell you ?  Shopping for service is
just as important as the purchase.  I have a number of issues with the one I
bought from.

                                         Good Luck,

                                          S/F   Jack

Thanks Jack! :pepper:

If I can fix the leak myself by sealing the bolt, I would rather do that then take it to the dealer for every stupid little thing.
plus I DON'T like to bring my bike to any dealer if I don't have to......I don't care how good their service dept is, they won't take care of my bike like I would. :2vrolijk_21:

so what was the fix for the leaking bolt? :nixweiss:

Sorry Big Deuce,

Didn't mean to miss lead you.

Had it in for the recall (battery) and forgot all bout the leak because of other problems
generated by the selling dlrshp., like not running at all (zip, zilch, kaplooy).

It is still leaking I think, raining alot around hear, not much travel time.
My friend is now washing it w/engine on at the bike wash.
I'll let you know how it works out for him.

UPDATE!!!!!!!

I tightened the bolt (actually, all three of them) a few days ago and NO MORE LEAK!

went for a ride yesterday, put on about 75 miles and it's still bone dry, no more oil stain on the block.

I'll still be keeping an eye on it, but for now, it's fixed... :pepper:
