OK, HEADPAN, where is this damn clutch everybody keeps telling me bad? I've taken this thing apart and I don't see anything that looks like a CLUTCH! :(

Robo, you might recognize it being called the starter drive.  It's the toothed gear assembly inside the starter.  There is a clutch mechanism of sorts inside of it.  Same part used from (I think) 1994 up until the starters changed with the 2007 models.

See attachment, item #15, overrunning clutch.

Hey Thanks guys! I see it now. And I got a service manual that I ordered two weeks ago so I now know what I'm looking at.
Thanks again everybody!

Hope you got the problem fixed. If not, your description sounds exactly like an car engine with a very weak battery.  I know this from a recent (week ago) experience.  Had enough juice to spin the starter, but not kick in the motor.  Replaced battery.  No problem.  Don't know if this is applicable to bikes.

Ride Safe.
