looks like a good idea, if you have 3 hours to kill.

That looks like it will work well. I made something similiar out of a plastic pan that was used for wall paper.

Why would  that take 3 hours?

Looks like a great idea to reduce oil spillage on your parts.
Thanks Cannibus_Man [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I've use this method in the past and it works great.  20 minute oil change, tops...including the time it takes to down the pepsi (along with a little Wild Turkey) and carve out the bottle!

I use a similar idea to catch the filter leakage.  Round plastic milk jug carved out with a small lip on the back.  Guess it's been through about 20 changes.

what is the big deal if a little oil spills on your bike?

Actually that one thing (oil spill during filter change) is the most significant part of the entire thread.  Whether someone changes their own oil or pays someone else to have it done is largely irrelvant.  Depends on anyone's relative skills, familiarity, patience, willingess etc etc etc.

Whomever does it, however, the oil spill is consequential.  It's the oil spill from the filter that leaks down on the front motor mount and helps it along toward a failure that will occur earlier then if it never got oil saturated.  And that is worth the minimal time and small effort to butcher a soda bottle.

Hey Otis

Where you been Bud?
Are you missing Tater Hubbard and Shrader?
Look forward to seeing you at the CVO rally.
We need to meet up (well down for you) at Tilleys someday.
When's Tater coming back? Remember at 135 it's only a 4 hour trip from Daytona to home for him?

Can't you just feel the love here?
I do! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I have been staying in the background keeping my mouth shut so I stay out of trouble.   Tater Hubbard will be coming home Sunday.  I just saw Shrader at www.hogsbreath.com in Key West.  It has been kind of quiet this week with both of them being gone.  Looking forward to meeting everyone at the CVO Rally.

as for as the soda bottle, i could have my filter removed an installed before you cut the bottle open.
and talking about not getting dirty, what is the big deal if a little oil spills on your bike?
what do you do with this clever little invention after you are done? clean it and put it away until next time?
it may work great for other members, and cudos to the man who thought of it.

whoa,, lol  hey man , i juz copied and pasted a picture from another site.It is actually someone elses idear. i wanna try it tho..the time frame is irrelevant to me .. i plan on changin all the fluids on my bike, all the time . when it comes due...if it takes time then im ok  with it ....oil containment was the idea ...make sure you loosen the filter some first  before ya load the hourglass on the filter then remove it by hand .. [smiley=laugh.gif]

i'll try and keep this one on topic, i could have used something like that, the last time i worked on my softail, i had to do a filter swap with a full bag of oil
( it seemed like a good idea at the time [smiley=dunce.gif] ), and believe you me it got messy on the front of the motor and frame. I for one will definatley be trying this trick.

Cann....man,

Thanks for this post and a excellent idea! [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Who da thunk?

That just saved me about 3hrs of clean up! Sure, anyone can change a filter in a couple minutes but who wants to leave that messy oil all over that beautiful bike? Of course I know there may be some person out here that won't care because money is no object. He may be capable of wiping his backside with $100 bills but that doesn't make it right, you still have CRAP on your bike!   [smiley=shocked2.gif]

On most FLH bikes it, (the oil from removing the oil filter), just makes a mess and degrades the front motor mount, but if you have the oil cooler like all FLHTCSE's have, then the oil gets behind the oil cooler and comes dripping out a bit later, like when you are going down the road.
It is an excellent way to keep the underside and back of your bike very well oiled. Because of this I always try to catch all the oil that I can with the bottle trick plus paper towels. If I miss some I usually end up taking off the oil cooler to clean up the mess.
Don't ask me how I know about this.  [smiley=beerchug.gif]

YEE-HI!!! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
It's GREAT to be back in these Majestic Mountains and tune in to this site!!  I see some of you even missed me. [smiley=bigok.gif]  Think of that!!  Were any of you on 40 or 92 between Ocala and Daytona last week?  Man, we had fun!!  Ain't no soot in Ol' Maudie!  Rode it everyday except Wednesday.  Rained.  Drove the Truck.  Shrader's back, too.  Saw him at his shop yesterday.  Told him I looked for him all up and down 95, but he was not to be found.  Used the excuse they were all in Key West.  Hey, BLM777-Is that the same as Crystal River?  Went by there many times.  Can't remember the route.  Good thread, kng103! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Keep it coming.  Chit, man, one of my threads was sent "File 13" by "The Man." [smiley=cry2.gif]  I made it right as best I could, and now some of these clowns call me "Tater!"  All I can say about money is what my Ol' Pappy taught me about it.  "If your expenses exceed your income, your assets in jail!"  Otis and I change our own oil in his Garage.  We change Engine oil every 1000-1500 miles, depending on where and how hard we ran.  When finished, we apply "Brake Clean", liberally, start and check for leaks, clean up the mess, and get in the breeze.  No oil on our bikes, anywhere!  Otis does most of the work.  He's younger than me, so he sees better.  Enjoyed your quip MFG!  I quote Vince Lombardi often, "If you can do it, it ain't braggin'!"  Looking forward to the Valley!  Later--HUBBARD
