Title: California or bust
Post by: 05yellowse on June 06, 2005, 07:48:10 PM
Myself and three others are leaving SW Va. this Sunday for a trip across the US. We are going via I40 and wish to get up to Durango,Co. then back down thru the painted desert,Grand Canyon,Las Vegas and staying a day or two in San Fran before going up the coast ultimately ending up at Fort Lewis Wash. Does anyone have any ideas as to something you have to see or recommendations as to road alternatives such as how much of the Old Rt 66 we could ride. We would also like to stay off the freeways getting to San Fran, such as riding in the valleys and then cutting across to San Fran. Any help is appreciated. I know you all that live and ride out west have got to have some good suggestions. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

05Yellowdeuce, sounds like a great ride.  You're going to be a bit south of Hwy. 50 going across Colorado on to Calif., but if for some reason you end up close to Ely, Nevada and need a place to spend the night, there's a old historic hotel right on the main street in the old part of town (on Hwy. 50)....they're biker friendly, have a security guard that'll watch your scooters all night, let you park 'em right in the front door and even had a ole knucklehead restored in the down-stairs blackjack casino.  Got a great steak in the rest. and the rates are reasonable.  I'd go out of my way to stay there again.  Hwy 50 across Utah and Nevada is breathtaking.....no traffic and vistas like us easterners have never seen.  It's like you've gone back in time to cross it on a harley......goes right by the ole wallowed-out 'pony-express' trail....still there.  The Grand Tetons just out of 'jellystone' are a blast to cross on a scooter too, if you get up to Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.  Dang, makes me wanna ride back out that way......enjoy the ride.    [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]    spyder

Hwy. 50 advertised as "the Lonielest Road in America".  I drove it for the first time, from Calif. to Colorado, about six months ago.  Would do it again in a hertbeat.

From L.A. to S.F. you have to take Hwy. 1 up the coast, all the way.

Have done the US 50 trip coast to coast.  It's interesting (at times) east of the Great Plains.  It's wonderful from there west.  You'll enjoy as much of it as you choose to travel.  Entirely different "feel" for a trip than old 66.  As much as you can cover of old 66 without more effort than it's really worth anymore is often on road beds shared with newer roads.  When it isn't it's a fun and interesting trip and some of the towns you see are wonderful.  But US 50 can be a trip where you really feel like your traveling by yourself, for yourself and in years gone by.  66 has interesting and fun commercialization mixed across it.  50 just has road and great vista and interesting places.

Oh, the name of the neat ole hotel in Ely, Nevada was Historic Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall.   Wasn't there a Eagle's song titled something like that????  Har!   [smiley=beatnik.gif]   spyder

Guys,

Have done Highway 50 (Loneliest Highway) a few times.

A great overnight spot is Eureka, west of Ely, you have to go to the Keyhole Bar and enjoy the nightlife, be prepared to stay till closing time. You will have great time meeting and partying with the Red T Shirted Clampers, "E Clampus Vitus".

If your close to Elko their is a great restaurant/bar close (around the corner from the Caino/Hotel). Forgot the name, it is owned by a family of ex Basque Shepherds who settled to mine in Elko just after WWII and now the sons run the restaurant.

Yeah, 'er 'uh, 05yellowse,
The only recommendation I can offer is, Fly low, but be careful!  You lucky Dog!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Anyway, I couldn't help but notice your location.  Is that the same NRV, as the NRV Speedway? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  If it is, I live only 45 minutes from there, via the Wilderness Road.  Have a Blast, and when you return, maybe we can meet up! [smiley=bigok.gif]  Later--HUBBARD

We have one here in Sacramento that matches it.  It says "Ocean City, MD  3073  Miles".  I never even heard of Ocean City and I always wondered about that sign.  Ours is on the side of the road, like a regualr mileage sign, but it's by itself.

I knew that was coming! [smiley=laugh.gif]  I'll get a picture of our sign ASAP.

I got to say, I always wondered "what the hell is that sign all about and why is it out there all by itself rather than with mileage signs of other citys along the way".

I've only taken it as far east as Colorado but it was a really nice two lane highway through the backroads of western America and I really, really appreciated it.  If travel time is not that important, I highly recommend this road.  There were actually times when thirty or forty minutes would go by and I'd not see another vehicle.  Makes ya wonder how they did it on horseback.

Just drove out there to take the picture.  They've changed the sign in the two weeks that I've been off work.  It no longer stands alone, now it also has Placerville and South Lake Tahoe on it, too.

I'll go to my office tomorrow, to download the picture.

Another one of these would be Route 1 from Ft. Kent, ME to Key West, FL...I made it to Caribou, ME on the bike but gave up trying to do the last 40 mi...I have so regretted that decision.

And another Coast to Coast road is I-40  that has a sign in Wilmington, NC that give the mileage to Los Angeles (I think)....I'll have to ride to Wilmington to snap a shot and post and someone in the LA area can get the sign on that end.  Do we have anyone from down south in Calif?    [smiley=nixweiss.gif]    spyder

Spyder, I used to live in Wilmington but don't recall the sign.  I'll look forward to the photo but can't say I envy you having to ride that long, flat, straight stretch of interstate highway to snap it.

If it's like the sign here in Sacramento, it'll be within 1/8 mile of the end of Hwy. 50.
