Ok so we're one day away from my departure from home down to Gatwick Airport in London. The bike will be prepped when I deliver it to the Servisair Cargo bay and it will be loaded, along with us, onto our Airbus 330 ready for our flight to Calgary on Wednesday 30th July.
This thread will hopefully get updated by me and all the good CVO buddies that we will meet during our trip. Any pictures, comments ::) reports will be most welcome
Our route takes in almost 8,000 miles starting from Calgary and heading down to Sturgis before wending down through the Rockies to the Grand Canyon. Phoenix is next, on through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and hitting the Gulf Coast in Galveston. New Orleans, Memphis and on up to Milwaukee for the 105th and finall y our last hop over the top of Lake Michigan, round to Manitoulin Island and finally down to Toronto for our flight home. 41 days in total start to finish with a total travelling distance of around 17.500 miles - 8,500 approx. in the saddle.
We are meeting up with a good few people on the way - Talon, Hogasm, Iski, Twincam, Jorge, 103tHunDer, neocacher, Al & Janine, Twolane, Murphy, Muffman, Harleyteam, Bayoubiker, cash338 to name a few plus a whole bunch more at our GTG's in Piedmont and Milwaukee. Hopefully all these people will manage a few pics to post on here.
I am also taking a Spot Satellite Tracker which can be viewed at:
http://jasonjonas.org/spot/tripViewer.do?id=192
This addy will take you to the site and give you a map of the USA and Canada. You can pan in and out of the map and view it as terrain as well as a road map. I guess the first locator beacon will appear on here late on Wednesday 30th July and then it will provide a constant track of our ongoing journey.
We are really looking forward to meeting everyone - if you know any of the folks I have mentioned and would like to tag along we'd love to see you too.
Here's the overview map of our full trip.

Well, I got to meet the imfamous Nige and his lovely bride Jan, plus their friends Mel and Ilene! Nige and I met at his hotel, which happened to have a nice bar and we consumed numerous containers of brewed beverages made from things like wheat, barley, hops, yeast and the perfect amount of carbonation... :drink:
Unfortunately I left my camera in my room in a hotel across town and did not get any pictures of him and his entourage...
But I did take this one of my bike on Sunday.....I left West Yellowstone Sunday Am and headed out through the park to Jackson Hole and then ended the day in Sun Valley, Idaho, returning home about 4PM today..about 1400 miles roundtrip... :huepfenjump3:

Hi Everybody - great to see that so many folk are managing to keep track of us via the SPOT satellite tracker.
We arrived in Calgary on Wednesday 30th July and got the bikes safely delivered back to us via the Canadian customs department. Hooked the batteries back up and both bikes fired up first time. No damage caused in transit either so we were good to go. We spent the first night in calgary and set off for Glacier National Park the next morning. Had a great ride down and enjoyed the great weather and the wide open spaces.
Next morning we set off acroos the Going to the Sun Highway and over Logans Pass in the Park - what a road - saw Mountain Goats, Big Horn Sheep and various large birds of prey. headed on into Missoula that afternoon and marveled at the wide open spaces of Montana. Those roads just seem to go on forever with never ending view of the Rockies to enjoy on the way. Traffic was virtually non existent and we travelled under a clear blue sky into magnificent rolling countryside.
Missoula has some real characters and after eating a great dinner in The Depot we enjoyed several beverages with the locals in various bars. The HA were in town too so many bikes were thundering around the city.
Next day saw another tremendous ride through Montana down to Yellowstone. We had a great lunch in Jackson Hot Springs at a fantastic bar and Hotel which we must try and stay at sometime in the future.
Arrived at the Stagecoach Inn in Yellowstone in good time for a few brews and then met Keithincda for a good chin wag and a few more brews. Keith had travelled a long way to meet us and we really appreciated the effort he mad along with his friend gerry - here's to you Keith :2vrolijk_21:
We spent a full day the next day in Yellowstone doing all the tourist stuff - cuddling Bears, petting Buffalo, canoodling the Elks and bathing in Old Faithful. Yellowstone is a truly remarkable place and really needs a few more days to do it justice.
Following morning and we heade out of Yellowstone through the Park and up to Mammoth Springs. What a sight, it sure amazes you to think how much water and how long it must have taken to build those Travertine Hills to such a size. We then headed on along the Chief Joseph Highway and up over the much praised Beartooth Pass. 11,000 feet and very cold - we rode through snow at the side of the road and enjoyed the spectacular views and the sweeping curves of the road through. Well reccommended by you good folks on here and very enjoyable.
We arrived in Cody that night at Buffal Bills Irma Hotel and spent some time watching the Wild west Show before enjoying a slap up dinner and of course more Moose Drool and Fat Tire.
Wednesday we travelled the BIg Horn Mountains on route 14a - if you get a chance do it. Superb road with little or no traffic and a great place to stop in the middle for lunch called the Bear Resort Inn.
So that brings us up to date as we are now in Deadwood and enjoying Sturgis and all the surrounding countryside and sites. We are off on a 285 mile loop tomorrow to take in the Badlands and as much of the monuments and sites as possible.
We had a great dinner last night at The Elk Creek Steak House with Al and Janine and Pado along with his wife Phyllis. A shame the other people who said they were going to join us didn't show, but you all missed a great night - hopefully there will be another time for us to meet you.
SPOT looks to be working well - you are right Howie, only straight lines to join the dots as this is a satellite tracker and it does not follow any road map. I just need to hit the " I am here" button as often as possible to keep the route as true as is possible.
I currently have no cell phone network - i dont know why, but everything is on track for us to meet up with the rest of the CVO crew. See you soon Craig. I'll phone you from the Hotel if I stll have no network coverage.
Sorry I can't post any pictures from here - hopefully I'll get to do that at Talons when I see him on Sunday.
Thanks for all the good wishes - I'll keep you updated as and when I can.
For now.

Possibly bad weather most the day today, right down the corridor where Nige will be riding. Hope it holds off, it cloudy here and pretty dark over the mountains. I smoked the pork yesterday just in case it did rain, plus I wasn't sure when they'd show up today. Should clear tonight for the ride over Trail Ridge tomorrow.

I have to say it looks good. Be sure to get a shot of Nige when he sinks his chops into that. ;D
-
Nige & Jan are here with Craig and Vicky. We have smoked the Pork and it made my Knob Creek!
Had a great ride down today, managed to miss all of the rain bar one shower just before we hit the I25. Custer State Park was well worth the ride especially the Needles highway.
Visited the Badlands yesterday and called in to cuddle a few bears in the Bear Country USA park near Rapid City. Ended the day in Jakes restaurant in Deadwood - if you are in the neighbourhood try it it's well reccommended.
We are going through the Rocky mountain National Park with Craig in the morning and then on down to Gunnison later in the day.
Thanks to Craig and Vicky for the Colorado hospitality.

I would have enjoyed it
-
Back from the ride, it was fun, I did about 240 miles. The only bad thing is I didn't get to say good bye to the group. We got to the town that was before are parting ways. I thought the turn off was still several miles, but was on it before I knew it. Cars and bikes behind us, so I had to just wave and yell. But we did have a great time. It was a little cold up top, one of the lower towns was a balmy 71*.
-
I know several of you are going to meet up with Nige along the way, if they don't see this tell them I'm sorry about the quick good bye, only screw up of whole ride!!! :confused5:

They should be hitting Red Mountain Pass soon!

Great pics Craig - had a really great night and a perfect ride out the next day. Smoked Pork plus all the trimmings was a real treat and the Knob Creek went down a storm - not too sure about it the following morning though. CVO hospitality at its very best, great big stonkin thanks to you and Vicky for looking after us.

Weather was great where we were, shame you couldn't make it.
Cool. Glad y'all had a good time. Hope it's sunny and not too chilly up top.
Wasn't bad at all - the coldest we have been was over the top of Beartooth - Rocky Mountain National Park was positively balmy compared to that.
Good report Nige, did you see John Johnston and his crew in Sturgis?
We need pictures?
Sounds like you are all having a ball. SPOT is brilliant almost feels like I'm riding with you; memories of 2003,

Dave :)
Hi Dave - yes we saw Johnny & Dot and most of the crew who were riding with in Deadwood. Johnny took me and Jan plus Brian and Jill out to the Badlands on the Saturday and then over to a place called Bear Park USA. It was a great days riding and you sure understand why the Badlands were named the way they were after you have been there.
Can't do too much about the pictures as I have nowhere to download them too so that I can upload them. That will be a big job when I get back.
SPOT seems to be keeping a good few people amused - John Ince was saying we had 400 hits on the Jason Jonas site after only a few days so it must be one heck of a lot more now.
Everyting is still going well and both bikes are running like trains. Over 4,500 miles now through an ever changing country. We have now ridden through snow lined roads and through barren desert where the temperature has been in the hundreds and we have been surrounded by giant Saguaro cactus.
The last two days have seen us riding through Arizona and New Mexico - the sheer scale of these States and the ongoing emptiness have to be seen to be believed.
We met up with Randy Dollar and Debra last night in Tombstone and had a great meal in Tombstone at THe Depot Steakhouse. Plenty of beers all washed down with some great dollops of laughter - excellent. This morning we met up with Randy and Debra for Breakfast in the Longhorn Saloon in Tombstone and they then treated us to 200 mile of great riding through Arizona. We visited a great bar in Bisbee called The OLde Tymers (not open but they let us in to see all the Biker memorabilia and photos). A visit to Douglas and the ? Hotel to see where the legendary Panch Villa had ridden his horse up the stairs was the last bt one viist of the day. Lunch in Columbus AZ completed our trip and we parted company. The last 80 miles saw us hugging the Mexican border before arriving at our Hotel for the night - THe Camino Real in El Paso.
Huge thanks to Randy and Debra - CVO friends for life!
We also managed a Helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon during our stay there - only one word awesome!
Cheers fer now.

Just catching a littlr breakfast in Fort Stockton before heading on through Texas to San Antonio, Morning is bright and clear so I guess we might take the back route via Del Rio.
The States we have covered are notching up now - Alberta, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico & Texas - great riding through all of them and it looks like we are staying lucky with the weather. We did some Texas storm dodging yesterday and watched in awe as the localised storms full of sand and lightning spead through. We managed to outrun em though and stayed dry all day.

I met our travelers as they pulled into port. Here is a few pics of the evening.

Another...

We took a little tour of the seawall/beach. An incident occured that shut us down for a bit, to be discussed in another part of this forum...but we resumed our merryment shortly after.
-
Finishing off the evening at the famous Willie G's. There we rambled on about gas prices, to the glasses that we tried to shape into the UK, and Ireland. Too fun.
This morning I believe they were racing the thunderstorms across the Bolivar ferry. Ride Safe. :2vrolijk_21:
In order left to right. Me, my wife Sheryl, Jan, and Nige.

Hi everyone,
A request earlier in the forum message, 'introduce ourselves'. I'm Mick Ingledew a freind of Nige, Jan, Mel and Eileen, enjoying a terrific venture in your beautiful continent. Nige and myself are Primary Officers for the Geordie Chapter HOG, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, near to the birth place of George Washington.
Together with his SPOT locator and everyones messages has certainly made this a vacation to remember. Many of our Chapter members have ridden the US of A, but with modern technology and communication aids, adds to the enjoyment.
Nige did say the Guiness was on him and Mel on their return,
Take care and ride safe,

I wish I was. It's my mate's 'Nige & Jans USA Pick up Ride' thread I'm following.
Is that a Road Glide your riding. Saw one in Las Vegas, and went ot order back in UK, but not on European market yet, so will stick with my Street Glide.

OK - we've just arrived in Lafayette after an unexpectedly dry ride. Plenty of water on the roads , but it must have fallen just before we rode through. The roads are getting much busier as we head towards New Orleans with loads of "Semi's" blatting along the road at up to 80mph - gotta watch those boys or they'll wipe you off the road like a fly hittin a windscreen!
We had an eventful night with Scot and Sheryl last night in Galveston, but I'll leave that story for Scot to tell in the appropriate section of the Forum. We finished the night in fine style at the appropriately named Willie G's bar and managed to consume a large quantity of Jim Beam and Jack Daniels. Cheers to Scot and Sheryl for taking the time to come and see us - it was greatly appreciated and thanks for posting dem der pics Scot.
5,600 miles on the clock now and another State to add to the list, namely Louisiana. (Sorry Bungy for the slip up with Alberta but I'm sure that everyone who is reading this thread is intelligent enough to know that Alberta is in Canada ::)
It's good to see some felllow Geordie Chapter members following the thread - translations are as follows:-
Cheeky git = most of the long standing members of the CVO Forum :o
Feckers = Similar word but slightly different spelling also applicable as above.

Hi Mick - glad you found the site. Hope you are enjoying following us with the aid of SPOT.
Nige and Jan better get home quick just to "dry out." :beerchug: :stars:
and to get some bigger pairs of strides! :o
The ride down through Texas via Del Rio and the Amistead reservoir was great - high desert which was unseasonably green due to the recent localised rains. We ran through clouds of butterflies and insects which pebbledashed the bikes into a multitude of greens, browns, yellows and reds - messy! Totally empty roads for over 200 miles with sweeping bends and great backdrops to look at - unreal is the word.
San Antonio is a really cool town to visit - the Riverwalk is one of the liveliest and best kept areas of the City. Well reccommended for anyone who gets the chance to visit.
We're off to New Orleans tomorrow and will hopefully meet up there with Bayoubiker for some good ole Cajun hosp-it-al-it-tee along with some brewskis and hopefully a good jazz and blues bar.
Catch y'all soon for the next instalment.

Hey Nige & Jan, what a great ride so far..........have fun in N.O. and ride safe. Great post of the ride. :2vrolijk_21: spyder

It was great to see you both and the meal and company were first class. A pity not more people could have been there but a great CVO night out never the less.
Weather was great where we were, shame you couldn't make it.
Wasn't bad at all - the coldest we have been was over the top of Beartooth - Rocky Mountain National Park was positively balmy compared to that.

Take the chip to Walmart photo center and have pics put on dics. Won't cost to much and will free up space for more pics. There are also many drug store around that do the same thing. Will take about an hour of your time though.

Hi there CVO folks. My names Jon Ince.....another friend of Nige Jan Mel and Eileen. Me and Nige do some big mileage rides back in the UK and with our partners Kim and Jan we rode to the European bike week in Austria in september last year. We have also taken trips to Scotland to sample the finer delights of the region and as many of you guys will attest Nige "likes his tucker (food)"....Saying that Jan likes it hot n spicy as well so you people meeting them in NO makes sure Jan gets it hot hot hot ! Mel and Eileen well what can you say. Mel is a great character and with his bassundo voice a great raconteur and will have you guys fit to bust. Next one of you people to meet up with the travelling foursome maybe one of you nice folks in NO....go up to Mel and ask him what a "Koonsilorrrr" is ! ...You have to say it like it reads "Koooonsilorrr" (Bit of Geordie for you to translate via Mel). Anyway there are many of us back in the UK following Jan n Niges trip. It's been a long time in the planning and all seems to be going like clockwork...a testiment to Nige's organisational skills.

They made it safely into New Orleans.
Their bikes are being serviced at NOHD while they spend some quality time in the French Quarter.

Morning everyone - Memphis calling here.
We had a pig of a ride yesterday, abiout 250 miles in the tail end of Fay, torrential rain and fairly windy. We managed to get the last 200 miles in relatively clear weather, but arrived here like "Drooned rats" at about 8pm. We soon got washed and brushed up though and headed down to Beale Street where we enjoyed some excellent food and great music in 'Silky's Irish Bar'. Finished the night with a walk along the street and listening to the various strains of music drifting out from the bars and restaurants.
New Orleans was a blast. We had a couple of great nights down in the French Quarter, along Frenchman Street and in Bourbon Street. Thanks to Tom (Bayoubiker) for the lift back to the Hotel on Friday NOLA HD. Sorry we didn't manage to hook up again later, but we didn't get the bikes back until nearly 7pm on the Saturday.
We're off to cape Girardeau today and should hook up with Hogbreath at Lambert's in Sikeston this afternoon for lunch.
Thanks for all the messages - I'll be going for a longer update once we hit Milwaukee as we will be there for four nights. We're looking forward to meeting everyone a the GTG's planned on the Thursday and Friday.
Later folks.

Nuts. Sorry I didn't keep up well enough Nigel. Was on travel all last week and didn't see the site. So lost track of your itinerary. Had hoped to meet up with your caravan at Cape Girardeau. 300 mile hop over there from here so never make it for lunch now though.
Have enjoyed reading the road trip tales. Hope it's been as much fun to do as it's been vicariously. Safe travel the rest of the way sir.

Well, they were close. They were in the cue ( ;D ) to see him, but they cut the line off somewhere in front of them. Probably wasn't the best way to do it since many people, including Nige and Jan, had been in line for some time already at that point. Nige said he tried to plead his case (CVOs flown from England, 6,800 miles and counting, on the way to the 105th, etc.), but it didn't do any good. :(
I was wondering about the tatoo when I saw the photos, too. :nixweiss:

I dropped some tomtom contact information off on Mel's bike this morning, since he is having some trouble with his GPS unit. As luck would have it, Willie, Bill, Karen, Jim Zeimer and the rest of the Harley contingent were just getting ready to fire up. Their PR guy was taking a group photo. I did not want to bother them since they were getting ready to roll, but it would have been cool to at least shake his hand. Oh well, maybe next time.
If you see a copper Street Glide going down the road with a guy in a half helmet, goggles, and black mask (I guess to cover up the signature white beard . . . it's Willie! :2vrolijk_21:

Willie riding a Street Glide, how good is that,..
When Hogasm and I went to the CVO meeting at Rapid City during Sturigs 06 Willie stated that the SG was his favorite. I had my street glide there so that was pretty cool, it made me feel special especially since he said it in front of all the CVOers.

Hi Everyone - just a short update this morning as we are off to the 105th party down at the Summerfest grounds .
We had a great day yesterday at the Miller Park Stadium where the 25th HOG Party was being held. The place was heaving and the vendor facilities were having trouble coping with it all. We stayed and watched Sugarland, Joan Jet & Lewis Carroll - all good. The Police displays of drill riding were spectacular and I'm looking forward to the Police Rider Skills competitions down at the Summerfest today.
7,080 miles on the clock now and all is going well.
We are having the CVO GTG tonight at the Lakefront Brewery at 5pm - should be 50 - 60 CVO chums there.
I'll try a fuller update later.
Thanks to Brian for all the pics and to all the other folk we have met between New Orleans and Milwaukee.
Time to party....................................... :2vrolijk_21:

Just back in from the parade of flags. The streets were lined with folk - thousands and thousands - a fantastic sight to see and great to be part of.
We had an excellent night last night and enjoyed some ZZ music along with another 20 or 30,000 harley goers. The place was packed to the gunnels and it was tough to see what was going on, but we made the best of it. Hope it's a little better organised for the Springsteen concert tonight.
This is our last night in Milwaukee and we start to head north again tomorrow. Our first port of call will be Green Bay before we head off to stay near Marinette. We're hoping to call in at Doc's HD in Shinawo County as it's supposed to be a really cool place.
The GTG in the Lakefront Brewery was a great success with nearly three full tables with around twenty people on each. As always it was difficult to talk to everyone but we all seemed to get plenty of pictures and make some connections to people we have only met on the keyboard.
I have neasrly 800 pictures now of th trip so far so I guess my post count might go up a little when I get home!
We're off down to the Veterans park on the Lakefront now................. life is hell!

hmmm, still no change in position from yesterday. I hope all is well. I think he needs to push a button on a transponder to send the satellite signal. Yea, they didn't have cell service when they started until they got near my house in Colorado, so they might not get service in Canada.

I've been waiting on them in Toronto, but nothing yet as well.
Neal is trying to track them down. He rode over there from MA. I contacted Nige's buddies in the "Nige" thread, and sent them Emails as well, seeing if they've heard from them. Neal's at their hotel trying to find them now. I hope everything's OK with our Brit friends! :2vrolijk_21:
Hoist! 8)

-
Just to let you guys know i heard from Nige n Jan yesterday via txt message. they were in the Falls View hotel and everything was fine. 2 nights rest there before coming back to the UK. It was their wedding anniversary on the 4th (thursday) so i guess they were having a little R&R before coming home.......don't think they need to push the Spot navigation button any more........You can see the entirety of their trip from an earlier posting. 7500 miles of meeting buddies and riding the lands in 36 days........"Living the Dream " .......1000 photos and a bucket of memories can't wait for the write-up ! :bananarock:
-
I've thoroughly enjoyed keeping up to date with their epic journey, and from the UK thanks to you all for looking after our Bros' adding to their more than memorable trip, cheers,
-
Have enjoyed the posts and pictures as well! What an incredible experience it must have been! Looking forward to the summary from Nige!

Hi all - sitting in the lobby os the Sheraton Fallsview and catching up on all the kind messages.
Lost my ability to phone people as i left my phone in the B & B we stayed in at Marinette. Of course the phone has all the contact numbers in so I was snookered.
Anyway we made it safe and sound to Toronto and dropped the bikes off at the airport yesterday. Hired a car in Toronto and arrived down in Niagara Falls last night at about 7pm. Neal was sitting waiting for us when we arrrived and I couldn't believe it when I saw him there at the front of the Hotel. What an effort for him - 900 mile round trip from home to come and spend a few hours with us, thanks so much Neal we really appreciated it and it was great to see you again.
We have also arranged to meet Harleyteam (Dennis) tonight in the Lobby of our Hotel (THe Sheraton Fallsview) at pm for Brewskis and dinner. I'm not sure if anyone else can still make it ( Murphy, Jester Whisperer ??) but if so it would be great to see you.
We are off to do the Niagara tourist thing now and will finish off the day with a Jet Boat tour at 4pm (very wet I understand).
Back on the plane tomorrow night and we should be home on Sunday afternoon/evening.
What a trip it's been - 8,100 miles on the tripometer when I delivered the bike to the airport and about 7,750 of those were dry, sunny ones. A million memories of people and places and new friends we have met. Hundreds of pictures (a big posting job when I get home).
Roll on the 110th when we plan to do it all again with our friends Jon and Kim ( by the way they surprised us by organising a bottle of fizz and a message when we arrived here last night - love and thanks to you both, it was greatly appreciated).
So on with the next days adventure.
Later folks.
Nige & Jan

Hey Nige, now that your home, make sure you get back on the wrong side of the road! ::)
Now let's think about that one - is the right side of the road right or is the right side wrong? If I ride on the left side of the road I think I am right but then again I could be wrong! When I got home I had to think which was the right side of the road and I knew that would be the left side of the road. Fortunately I made the right decision and rode home on the left side, which you would consider to be wrong - but I made it back safe and sound anyway so guess I must have been right.

Thanks for all the anniversary wishes.
After 21 years I let Jan buy me a Wedding ring. I never wore one before as I had been married previously (with a ring) and it didn't work out. I figured after 21 happy years that we must just stick it out together so I now proudly wear Jan's ring, which she bought for me in Toronto.

Yea, Jan's quite the photographer! She was snapping pictures up in the mountains on the twisties. I don't think I could look through a view finder while sitting on the back of a bike going around a turn.

-
Crossing the ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar. We remarked on all the wonderful houses built on stilts in Port Bolivar which just a few short weeks later would be trashed by Hurricane Ike - scary !
-
Looking out towards Port Bolivar - absolutely loads of Dolphins during this crossing
-
Jan feeds the Alligator at Prejeans Restaurant Lafayette - dinner was great here, make it a place to stop if you happen around this way. I had the Gumbo - fantastic.

14ft long and 800lbs - probably would have done well in the WWF !

Heading towards New Orleans - I had seen the lichen covered trees on the TV before but they sure were weird to see in the flesh.

Great ride Nige! You saw Galveston when it still looked like Galveston. Prejeans - mmmmmmmmmmm!
Bet you are glad to be home.
Mike
-
We really did have one helluva trip.
Plenty more photos to come though.
Here's one that shows Elvis had a few hits in his time!
-
I never knew that they had moved Elvis' body from it's original burial site in Memphis back to Graceland.
-
Mel at Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston - The home of "The throwed Roll".
What a great place , if you get the chance go there.
-
We moved on to Effingham HD and picked up these three reprobates.
Brian (103tHunder), Ken (Hogbreath) and Horay (Amigo Jorge) - hope I spelt that right.
-
Brian's 103 SEUC looked like it had just come fresh from the mint.
-
Lunch with the crew we picked up in Effingham. Martha (next to Brian) is the one new addition to this picture.
-
Brian (lead) and horay head off to lead us up to Urbana HD.
-
The Police were at the Urbana HD dealership to meet us - they must have heard that Brian was with us!
-
Willie G and Nancy were gobsmacked to have made the journey to Urbana only to find out that Jan & me didn't have time to see them!
-
WE picked up with Jim (Screamin) and his good lady Joan in Urbana - here's me and Jim.
-
and here's one of Joan (left) with Jan & Eileen. They all had beer - hence the smiles!
-
Brian, Mel, Nige & Jim in Urbana = looks like an ad for the Friday Beer Thread
-
Willie G's bike - he asked me to sign the tank, but I was too busy with my new friends!
-
Brian left with the law hot on his tail
-
and so to MIlwaukee for the 105th celebrations - this was at The Miller Park on the Thursday for the HOG Party. Indianopolis PD doing their drill riding - superb.
-
No room for error with these manouvers
-
Last one for now.
Not a bad trick with a V Rod - what was this guy's name?
-
The crowd waiting for Sugarland to come on stage at Miller Park
-
Sugarland were great - :2vrolijk_21:
-
We had great weather for the whole of the 105th celebrations at the Summerfest Grounds - Milwaukee
-
Hi Rise Harleys at the Summerfest grounds
-
and so the CVO GTG at the Lakefront Brewery - don't think I can remember all these names
Gary & Mike?
-
another table of CVO'ers
-
Eagle1/George - the party organiser (right) Steve (middle) Ken (left)
Great job by the way George, right down to the name tags.
-
English buddies
-
I recognise Chip on here - then I'm struggling
-
I never knew that they had moved Elvis' body from it's original burial site in Memphis back to Graceland.
Grave robbers would you believe!!
-
105th Anniversary Parade - Milwaukee. What an experience.
-
More of the Parade.
-
People and more people
-
Not too sure how many folk watched the Parade, but they were everywhere.
-
The Springsteen concert in the Veterans Park was outstanding - the guy gave us three and a half hours of unbroken entertainment - tremendous.
-
The Boss
-
We left Milwaukee on the Sunday and lunched at The Green Bay Packers Stadium in Green Bay. Curly's Pub was good, but the barstewards wouldn't let us see the hallowed turf unless we bought an hour long tour ticket. Wonder if the guy has managed to remove that football yet!
-
and so onto Doc's HD in Shawano County. This has to be one of the most interesting Dealerships I have ever been too. A car and bike museum along with a zoo plus the fastest Panhead ever built. You have to go there if you are ever in the area.
The bike pictured was built in 17 days just prior to the 105th in Milwaukee. It has four 45 cu in Flathead engines which all drive the rear wheel in unison. Doc trailered it down to Milwaukee and rode it in the Parade along with four passengers.
-
We stayed here for the night - it was a B & B nestled in the woods near Marinette WI. It is owned by a lovely couple called Jim & Lily Shea and is called Shea-Dy Pines. It is built from 60 tons of Engelman Spruce and was without doubt the nicest place we stayed on the whole trip.
Go there - tell em Nige and Jan sent you.
-
The galleried first floor from the living room
-
The dining room seen from the living room - Lily serves a fantastic home made breakfast.
-
The gallery on the first floor which looked out onto a huge woodland meadow that was full of Whitetail Deer when we arrived.
-
Our bedroom - which had a balcony looking out over the meadow.
-
The next day saw us heading up the western coast of Lake Michigan - pity the weather was so bad again !!
::)
-
Stunning views from our lunch stop overlooking Lake Michigan.
-
No wonder the Trout grow so big around here. This guy was huge.
-
Heading for the Mackinac bridge before our stop for the night in Mackinaw City.
-
Mackinac bridge with some Bro's heading off the bridge towards us.
-
Great roads through northern Michigan heading toward Manitoulin Island for our next nights stop. Pity about the sh*tty weather again
-
The last bridge we crossed in the USA just before we went across the border into Ontario, Canada.
-
Into Ontario and the riding was spectacular.
-
What a great little wooden bridge we crossed as we headed for Manitoulin island.
-
Our digs for the night. South Bay Guest House, South Bay, Manitoulin Island - this little village was so laid back it nearly fell of it's rocking chair. We had a superb dinner that night at a place called The Garden Gate Restaurant which was about ten minutes ride from the digs. After dinner we rode back through haunting ethereal mists that would have frightened the pants off the Devil himself.
Great great night. :2vrolijk_21:
-
Thanks again Nige. :2vrolijk_21:
-
Mel and a guy who tried to leave without paying his bill
-
The lady who owned the B & B also ran an excellent little Gallery and gift shop. Most of the goods inside were made by local people. Well worth a look.
Did you know that Manitoulin Island is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the World?
-
Leaving the harbour in South Bay aboard the Chi Cheemaun Ferry to Tobermory.
-
We arrived in Toronto that night - this was where we had booked dinner - the CN Tower.
-
The Blue Jays were playing at home that night - I think this was the best seat in the house. We could actually see the pitcher throwing the ball though we were too far up to see the ball.
-
The views of Toronto from the revolving restaurant are stunning and the food was very good too. A little pricey, but well worth the extra for the experience.
-
Another from the CN Tower.
-
The next morning we delivered the two bikes (which had completed nearly 16,500 flawless miles between them) to the airport and prepared them for their return journey home. Once we had sorted the bikes and the necessary paperwork - (which was a nightmare as they said they only had room for one bike on the flight, we sorted that eventually after about two hours of messing around) - we hired a Ford Escape and headed off for our last two days in Niagara Falls.
This was the view that greeted us from our bedroom window at The Sheraton Fallsview Hotel - The Horseshoe Falls.
:2vrolijk_21:
-
If you look real close, last row on the right in your photo of the Dome, you will see me looking around and saying "where's Nige and Jan?"
Sorry we missed you!

Another without the window frame. (We decided to take it out ! :o )

Lol Murphy - I remember saying to Jan at the time that I thought that was you. Hopefully we'll catch you next time.
-
Me and Jan doin the the Tourist thing.
-
View from the observation platform beneath the falls.
-
That Friday night we met up with Mr and Mrs Harleyteam ( Dennis & Karen). We had a great meal at a local Mexican and shared numerous stories about life and biking.
Thanks to you both for taking the time to meet us and take us out to dinner.
:2vrolijk_21:
-
Well that takes me up to our departure from Toronto on Saturday 6th September.
But........................ I don't know if anyone noticed, but the pictures I posted started around the Badlands. I have another good few pics of our first weeks riding down from Calgary to Yellowstone and across to South Dakota for Sturgis.
Here's one - more later.
Going to the Sun Highway - Glacier National Park
-
I just noticed after posting the last lot of pics from Niagara that I don't have any of our exalted forum leader Neal.
i don't know why that is - forgot the camera? ran out of battery juice? :nixweiss:
Anyways, Neal rode a 900 mile round trip to come and see us (awesome) and we shared a great night in Niagara. I've nicked one of Neal's earlier photos here.
Thanks for coming over Neal it was great to see you - you are now officially the first person that I have seen twice from the CVO Forum. I think that it is very fitting that you hold that crown.
:2vrolijk_21:
-
Back to the very start of the trip. Jan Mel & Eileen getting ready for our first day of riding in the car park of the Inn on the Mcloud Trail - Calgary. Little did we know what an incredible trip awaited us.
-

Nige, do they still charge the $25 to go up the CN tower if you have a dinner reservation? The tower in Niagara Falls has a revolving restaurant as well. Sorry to have missed you. I was going to join up with Neal on the way but had to go to Florida at the last minute and left that morning. What a wonderful and it's so well documented here for others to follow. Great job!

No they don't. If you have a dinner reservation it is free to go up the tower. Guess that means you make a bit of a saving on the cost of the dinner (which was very good).
It was a shame you could'nt be there. Hopefully we'll catch ya the next time.
I think this thread is as much for me as anyone else - I intend to write the trip up as well and this will help to jog my memory whwn I do it. I guess that is going to be a winter project.

This was the set up on the bike. SPOT satellite tracker which had thousands of views on the Jason Jonas site during the course of the trip and the Garmin Zumo. The Zumo was programmed for every day of the ride before we left. It worked faultlessly and meant we included all of the great roads and scenary I had pre-planned.
-
Hitting the wide open roads of Alberta and heading for the States.
Does it get any better than this?
-
The bikes parked up for our second night stay at The Sunshine Inn - Glacier National Park.
-
Glacier National Park - there must be more rivers, streams and waterfalls in this area than in most places in the World. Stunning.

If a picture paints a thousand words.............................

Heading up towards Logan Pass - Glacier National Park.

Oh my.

How you are you going to decide which pics to print and frame Nige? The one of you and Jan sitting by the falls would surely have to be one.

Nige,
Thanks for sharing you wonderful adventure. I hope I get to meet and ride with you on your next vist here.

Thats a good question Jim. My intention is to get a large frame which multiple pictures can go in. If I can get one that holds about 15 that will be good.
But what do I do with the other 900 :nixweiss:

Back on the road again and heading for the Canada/USA border
-
Wish you were here ??
-
Over the border - very friendly pair of ladies at the boder crossing. We had a good laugh with them and with the custom's guys who were mystified by our "strange license plates man" !
-
and she looks so sweet and innocent to me..........!
-
We decided that the USA wasn't too shabby round this neck of the woods either!
-
and so to more important matters ....... a refreshing beverage at lunch time (one was Mel's - honest!). We drank a lot of this during the

Montana - no wonder they call it big sky country. I have never ridden anywhere quite like this and I guess I'll never beat it till the day I die !!
-
Not quite sure where we were here !
-
These guys were confused too !
-
This was a great place we stopped for lunch at Jackson Hot Springs. The whole place is heated by the local hot springs. The water goes all the way through the buildings heating system before ending up in it's outdoor swimming pool. They have to do it this way as the water is way too hot to go straight in the pool. They have a huge dance floor in the middle of the main room and the walls are decked with hunting trophies.
Definitely a place to call into if you ever in the area.
-
Great beer too - Lewis & Clark's Brewing Co. - Amber Ale.
Yummmm !
-
The bikes outside the bar in Jackson Hot Springs. The flamed bike was the owners, which his wife had thrown down the road the week before ! I took a picture of the good side, the right side was a bit of a mess. Looked like quite a few $$$$$$ needed to be spent to put her back in shape again as the paint job was a one off and had been done way down in the States somewhere.
-
Back on the road again and heading for Missoula.
-
Just swamped with traffic again - Mel didn't know what might hit him next !
-
and so that brings us down to West Yellowstone for our first two nights stay.
I was kinda thirsty after all that scenery so I had one of these in preparation for our next day's touring around Yellowstone Park.

I think this was the Madison River running through Yellowstone. I would have loved to spend a day or two fishing these stunning rivers.
if you look closely on the right horizon you can see the smoke from the foreat fires that were raging in the North Eastern corner of the Park.
-
Our first sighting of the Buffalo of yellowstone.
-
This deep vent hole was known as "The Dragon". As well as the continuous stream of sulfur filled steam it rumbled and grumbled continuosly. Must have been really scary to the native Indians who thought it was the lair of an underground demon.
Way cool.
-
This was a very active mudpot. The mud was very liquid and rushed out from an underground vent. I never did figure out where it all went after it had issued from it's cave???

Hey George - it was easy, we packed enough stuff to last for a week and then we washed stuff at the hotels we stayed at for more than one night. When we had amassed more Dealer T's and stuff we fed-exed a parcel back home.

So how you gonna top this trip?
Not quite sure about topping it, but we are planning another 5 week odyssey in 2013 for the 110th HD Anniversary. We are also looking at doing a west coast (vancouver to San Diego) and back up the western side of the Rockies trip in between. Guess that one will be aboout 4,500 - 5,00 miles and take about 3 weeks.
The planning is fun tho - so many options.

Is that all! I keep going through them and finding more that I think are worth sharing.
It's starting to get cold here now and the last couple of nights have brought some heavy frosts. Parts of the country have had their first snow falls of the winter and the trees are now all becoming bare.
It's nice just to sit for half an hour and go through some more of the pics and dream of those warm, cloudless days in the saddle.

Silverton Colorado
At 9,318 feet in elevation, the Town of Silverton is completely surrounded by stunning 13,000 - 14,000' peaks. More peaks this size in fact than anywhere else in America. The Victorian charm of the old homes and miners cabins are second to none. Silverton is a town that has its own color and character. Most of the buildings and the mining-laden hillsides reflect a simpler day as does the Silverton lifestyle. Silverton offers a style of living where there is more time for family and community. The year round population of 500 is supported by the 250,000 visitors who come here for the peace and tranquility each year. Once summer is over and most of the visitors have gone back home the town quiets down to a slow winter lifestyle locals have come to love.
Located in the San Juan National Forest, over 85% of the surrounding land is national forest. The Weminuche Wilderness, and thousands of acres of public land offer recreation and solitude for everyone.
Great fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, river rafting and many other activities are just some of the things to do here. The Denver & Silverton Railroad is another popular tourist attraction.
Summers are great weather with the occasional shower and the July 4th celebration is one of the busiest times as tourists from all over come to see the fireworks show Silverton is famous for.

Cost me about £2,635.00 return. i flew into Calgary in Canada and then back from Toronto. it's not so easy to fly a motorcycle into mainland USA these days, which is a direct result of 9/11. When I booked the Dollar was weak weak and I was getting over $2.00 to the £1.00. The same trip now would cost £3,500.00 or at todays exchange rates arpund 4,100 Euros. There will also be some airport customs clearance fees and handling charges amounting to around £125.00 - 150 Euros plus your insurance charges. I was there for nearly forty days and the insurance was $1,100.00.
Having said all that i would still reccomend taking your own bike if you can as our American CVO chums just love to see a foreign plate on their turf.
Go for it if you can.

The same trip now would cost £3,500.00 or at todays exchange rates around 4,100 Euros.

The plates also explain why he was riding on the wrong side of the road! :P

Wow, I think it's cheaper to buy a new one when you land and sell it when you get to the end.

Ok, I'm sick! I blew up the picture got the name off the sign Heidi's Saloon, Googled it and found info below, Longview, Alberta, Canada.
Heidi’s Food Saloon
Hearty all day breakfast plus delicious sandwiches and homemade soups and much more available for lunch. Open 7 days a week from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm. Located on Hwy 22 (The Cowboy Trail) in Longview. 'Drop in and eat where the cowboys come!" Wir sprechen deutsch.

Just had a thought why this quotes the "Cowboy Trail". This would be because Hwy 22 is on the old "McCloud Trail" - nice one Craig :2vrolijk_21:

Cowboy Trail refers to hwy 22 which runs from hwy 3 in the south to hwy 39 in the north. It's called that because it passes thru ranching country. Mcleaod trail is actually the old hwy 2 thru Calgary.

Afascinating picture of a Yellowstone mud hole !
-
Norris Geyser Basin is home to the largest active geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser. Steamboat can reach 380 feet and its steam phase can be heard miles away. Unfortunately, Steamboat is rare, the last major eruption was in 1991. Even so, Steamboat can be fun to watch. It often has minor eruptions some of which reach 40 feet. And, who knows, someone will probably be present when it has its next big eruption, why not you.
This was it when we were there - we waited for a while, but no luck.
-
A Blue Hole in the Norris Geyser Basin area. Couldn't fancy swimming in it though cos it would burn the skin off of your unmentionables in a flash !
:nervous:
-
Looking across the Norris Geyser Basin area from the road. It looks like something from another planet.
-
Another from one of the vantage points near the visitor centre.
-
Back on the road and heading round the inner loop in Yellowstone Park.
-
Heading around Yellowstone Lake - it is huge.
-
Our first view into Yellowstone Canyon.
-
Another - the pictures don't do this canyon justice. It is deep and steep sided - well worth a visit if you are in Yellowstone.
-
View across the Park with the Forest fires burning on the horizon. If we had left a day later our chosen exit route would have been closed due to these fires.
-
Hmm - on days like these it's good to be alive...........................Harley dreamin !!!

That's a definite Jim. I think you could spend a good few years of summers travelling the length of the Rockies and still have plenty left to marvel at.
I think I'm on the third shuffle through the pics now so still a few more to go.
Here's another yellowstone postcard.

Scene from the top of Mammoth Hot Springs..........sure does look like snow.

Starting to head out of the North East Corner of Yellowstone.............that sure is a lot of land.

View from the road just outside our superb apartment style room at the Hilton Tapatio Cliffs - Phoenix. It was mega scorchio and the humidity was unbelievable.
Great place though.

I think thats kind of unlikely Howie as the couple we are going with want to do Sturgis and as much of the Rockies area as possible. I think we might just blast straight across to Milwaukee this time for the 110th HD Rally and who knows where after that. If we bring our own Scoots again we will probably have to fly into and out of Canada as we did last time so that kind of blocks out upstate NY.
I think an East Coast trip is going to have to be another trip for us as there is just so much to see and do. The West Coast trip will also be a seperate trip - Seattle to San Diego down the PCH and then back up through the Western side of the Rockies.
So much to do - so little time!

Hi Neil - long time no speak. Hope you and Sue are keeping well.
Niagara has got to be a possibility again as our riding buddies are highly likely to want to see the Falls. Plus, Toronto is a good place to organise a flight back home from. If we do it we should try and arrange to spend two or three days together so that we can get out and do some riding. I'm sure you and Howie could come up with a plan for that.
In the meantime here's another photo to keep our whistles whetted!
-
Just browsing my pics and found one that reminded me of those long, warm, blue sky summer days. This one is from Northern Montana just near to the entrance to the Waterton Glacier International Peace Park.

Hey Howie - how's it going?
We were just talking about our planned 2013 trip with our riding buddies the other day. The plan still stands, though we haven't decided on our routing yet. Five weeks commencing around the beginning of July is the outline and then we need to fill in all the pieces. Sturgis and Milwaukee will feature in the trip of course.
Thanks for the good wishes. Have a great Christmas and New Year.

That was a real shame Neil. Hopefully next time (wherever it is) we'll be able to share some more time together. Some riding and bullchitting, beers and vittles for a few days sounds good.
All the best to you and Sue for Christmas and the New Year.

I think Knob Creek by a roaring fire would be the order of the day.

Yea, Nige that sounds good. It's been a little warmer here the last week, I was out all day yesterday in a short sleeve shirt. I always have some Knob Cheek in the cabinet so if you get back out we can break it out! I also have a locally made small batch whiskey that's really good also.
