Title: Engine Touch-up

Anyone had any luck touching up small scratches on the silver paint of their motor? I bought the HD touch-up paint and it is not so easy to get successful results.

What part or parts are you talking about?

I'm thinking the silver parts are the raw metal that isn't painted.

Some of the covers on the softtails, sportys that are silver are painted but on the SEEG I believe it's just the raw metal.

I'm sure if I'm wrong TwoLane will know the answer.

They actually are painted.  'Cat, which kind of paint are you using, brush or spray, and what is the problem with the result of your repair attempt?

Silver powdercoat.

It's a powdercoat.  And the touch up paint is really really tough to make a great match to the powdercoat when the spot gets very big.  The processes are different enough that it's just tough to do. The touch up is generally visually fine for small areas.  But the bigger the divot the easier it is to see the differences in color shading.

I thought the "blond" motor was a "bead blasted" motor.  Are you sure it is a powder coat?  I didn't think they used powder coat on them because they chipped at the spark plug ports. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Unless it's changed recently Striker it's a powdercoat.  The touch up paint at the dealership has a name that is something like "silver bead blast" as that's the color the power is trying to emulate.  But it's a powder finish.  The powder won't show the stains that a bare aluminum piece would so it makes for a better looking finish over the long haul.

Yep.  Black engines are crinkle black powdercoat, silver engines are crinkle silver powdercoat.  Take a look at the machined surfaces of the cooling fins to see the difference in appearance between bare aluminum and the powdercoated surfaces of the rest of the motor and transmission.

I have a couple of small scratches under the left header pipe on the top of the primary. I bought a bottle of the liquid touch-up paint. Put it on and took it off a couple of times due to unsatisfactory results. Just wondering if anyone has a proven technique?
