Title: CHIT!  Throttle cable broke
Post by: WFP on July 22, 2005, 12:09:25 PM
Left at 1130 to take a leisurely ride through Newport and around ocean drive.  Just getting on the road and snap...suddenly no throttle.  take apart the housing and there is the frayed cable.  No Leisurely ride for luch today.  I remove the adjuster and slied the cable out and using my leatherman i ride to home depot.  Buy a needlenose visegrip...this works better as I can use it like  a grip throttle levering on the rag covered switch housing.  Back at work now thinking about the 30.5 mile trip home...wondering how the cruise will work on the highway.  No hotrodding today.

Now to call service and see if i can drop it off.

True...but now i will be riding around on a 1986 rebel 250!  SED estimate is STILL not done and who knows how long this will take...BIG Boar in westport did not really want to take it on.

Yes...but it is still under the basic 2-year warrantee...let harley pay...the cable is too young to have broken in my mind.

Bill, did you write that right?  Still waiting on the estimate for the SED?  Not the repair but the fracking estimate?  Holy crap  [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

You should be able to give plenty of slack at the grip end of the throttle to pull it off the carb.  You will have to remove the aircleaner, but the rest should not be too bad.

OK, it is in the shop and they don't have a cable in stock...What do ya think of my redesigned throttle...should I patent it?

I'm thinkin the same thing.  What's with these dealerships that are out of stock on common items?  Are they the small, mom & pop dealerships or something?

But WFP has exhibited some very fine.......what we used to call "jail house ingenuity" there with those vice grips.  A guy has to do what a guy has to do.

Kind of reminds me when I was a kid......53 Ford and the teeth on the steering wheel stripped out (broke off, whatever...don't relly remember the "why" of it) and I was more than 100 miles from home.  But the trusty vice grips worked fine.  Those vice grips ended up being my steering wheel for several weeks, before I got around to getting another steering wheel for it.  Memories......it's what we live for at my age. And that phone call would start "hello, you've had my bike since 1987 and got the estimate for it written in the late 90s, is the damn thing finally done yet?"

I thought one time you said they had it 37 years?  18 doesn't sound so bad, then. [smiley=laugh.gif]
