Title: The Tunnel that made The Great Escape possible
Post by: iski on December 04, 2008, 07:20:26 AM
Received from a friend and wanted to pass this along.

The Tunnel that made The Great Escape possible (This was the same tunnel
made famous by the movie 'The Great Escape') When graphics appear, move
cursor over the number (no need to click) to display an explanation of
 activity.

Make sure you take the tour.  It's really something to see.

The last number to 'roll over' is 16.  Be sure to look and read the numbers and click 'next'
 to move along.

In 1943 work had begun on 'Harry', the tunnel that allowed over 70 men to
escape from the German POW camp, 'Stalag III', during World War II.
This was the same tunnel made famous by the movie 'The Great Escape'.
The URL below takes you to a site where one of the men, after the War,
drew a diagram with explanations of each of the sections.

It's amazing how accurate the movie was, even though it couldn't possibly
include all the information involved in this great engineering feat.  Hope
you find this as interesting as I did.

You are welcome mi amigo.

One of my favorite movies.  Our best to you & Martha.

I rode into, instead of over, a barbed wire fence once.  Not as cool as Steve McQueen though.

Without a doubt the Great Escape is my favorite movie... I think I can recite the entire movie word for word now! After reaching my 34th time watching it over the years, for Christmas '04 my wife finally surprised me with the video.
However, I still drive her crazy 'cause when I'm channel flipping and come across it, I just can't resist and end up getting stuck on it again.

When I went for a personalized license plate for my first Harley back in '91, I ordered the plate to read "HILTZ", but unfortunately it was already taken... You see, I often referred to my '91 Softail as "My Great Escape" and just loved the role Steve McQueen played in the movie.  I guess that is because I always seem to get myself in trouble!

Thanks for the very interesting post.

Take care,

Grizzly
