Title: How do you keep your bike from getting dusty in the garage
Post by: 2009FLTRSE3 on January 11, 2009, 10:10:52 PM
My bike is in the garage and covered with a fabric cover and dust gets through the fabric and settles on the paint, has anyone figured out how to avoid this without a plastic cover that promotes rust in the winter.

No way really to keep your bike dust free in a garage. You'd have to have a special room with Hepa filters or a CBA setup for that. My advice is to buy a decent compressor and blow off the dust that finds it's way through your CVO Indoor cover.

I keep an oscillating fan blowing on the bikes all the time.  Never have a dust problem.   :2vrolijk_21:

If dust should settle...get that thing out and blow the dust off. I find most of it leaves somewhere around 80-90mph.

Are you using the CVO cover.  I've never taken mine out of the bag, and if it doesn't stop the dust, I guess I won't bother.  If you can find a way to keep the dust off, let me know so I can do the same on the car in my garage also.  I get pretty frustrated after spending all the time detailing my bike, and then by the next day, it's covered with dust.  I know part of my problem is that I almost always go in and out of my house through the garage.  Maybe if I'd learn to use my front door, I would have so much dust in the garage.  Or, you would always leave your bike with me and you'll never notice the dust.

Miker has one for his Oldster in FLA but it's lousy for showing off the bike and difficult to get the bike in and out of.  It's way easier wipe the bike off once a month (need it or not) or just ride it in the rain to rinse the dust off.

I find riding the bike and not letting it sit in the garage very long keeps the dust off...if you live in the cold climes, my advice would be to move south.    8) ::) :nixweiss:

The dust that gets throught the filter on the bubble is even more fine than regular dust, like talc, I quit on it. Addtional filtration would require a bigger fan as the the one provided is just a little biscuit fan and hardly adequate to inflate bubble from the get go..

The silver bike is much better at hiding the dust but being the wettest bike I have ever owned it usually gets rainwater rinsed every freaking time I ride it...

I just use compressed air on the Oldster before his weekly run.  The other bikes are now in the trailer and seem to stay dust free in there...

I am so confused.  So is moving south a fine idea?  Or is the dust fine?  Or even too fine?  Is too fine like double good?  Or like a high maintenance w... um, never mind.  And, why, now, am I suddenly hearing in my head one of the voices performing live and in concert "I'm too sexy for my shirt, too sexy for my dust, too se..."  Wait, dust....  where's Lyra?

Fine(adj)-  The last word you never want to hear from a woman at the end of an argument.  When it's said, it means the opposite (along with hot tongue and cold shoulder on the menu for a few days).

A good blower might be less harmful to the paint than that duster Howie.  Here's infrared imagery of what a really good blower can do.  Who'd have thought you could watch such a thing in infrared  Click here (http://www.break.com/index/fart_caught_on_infrared_camera.html) ?

Hey there 2009FLTRSE3.  Just noticed there was no follow up post after your first one here asking how to keep your bike from getting dusty.  Please don't get too shook up over what transpired in this thread after your question.  Just started to say we weren't laughing at you we were laughing with you; but I'd have been full of chit if I did.  There was a little laughing at you going on.  But that's ok.  We do it to each other all the time.  So grab a beer and play along.

When the bike gets dusty, do like I do....nothing better than pure, clean rain water!
Park the bike outside, wait for rain, wipe dry.
That happens here about 4x per year, thus, my bike is always "dusty"!!!

Try using the 360 degree Swiffer duster. You can get them just about anywhere.  I've found it to work great on my springer. I just change out the duster before it get very dirty.  I live fairly close to a busy highway and get dust from that after a couple of days.  It seems like the Swiffer duster acts like it is negatively charged and draws the dust onto itself without having to really contact the paint much.

Your bike shouldn't be getting dusty in the garage.  It should be getting dusty sitting in your local HD shop awaiting the head update/recall, or heated grips or et al!

The Dealer gave you the wrong cover I bet! They gave me a "91625-04 softtail cover" for my Dyna.
Then they gave me a "91691-05 OZ/v-Rod-CVO"?

Look inside the cover and read the tag, good luck.

Not sure how long you are leaving the bikes parked to get this much dust buildup, but it must be coming up from the bottom. I use a cover made from cotton, my wife sewed it together, use a Exigent for pattern. Made it a little longer so it touches the floor all the way around and I have little or no dust, even if I leave the bike for a couple weeks while on vacation. We keep 2 fans, one a ceiling type and one a Home Depot floor fan, both running on high 24/7 due to humidity so lots of air movement, but no dust on bike.

If you really hate dust on your bike, then invest in the Harley Bubble.  It doesn't take long to set up and it will keep the bike virtually dust free.  I use it all winter long here in the Midwest and when I take her out in March she's just as clean as she was when I put her away in December.  Keeps the moisture out too...

While my bike is parked in the garage I keep a queen size sheet draped over the bike. The cotton sheet breaths well and seem to keep my bike somewhat dust free. My previous bike was a Heritage and a queen bottom sheet fit just fine. I now have a CVO Ultra and I have sewn the bottom fitted sheet and about 24 inches of the top sheet together (length wise). The cover that comes with the CVO is too bulky and difficult to put on or take off quickly.

The standard nylon cover that either you get from Harley or one of the aftermarkets does a pretty good job of keeping the dust off.  I typically let mine cool for a few hours then put the cover on it and it makes a huge difference, especially living in the dust bowl of Oklahoma!

Take it to Tilley's and leave it all Winter!  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: Seriously, when Ol' Maudie is resting upon her jack, in my garage at home, I have my Detail Man come clean her every 2 weeks, and wax once a month with 3M Hand Glaze.  There endeth the lesson.    8)  Later--HUBBARD
