Post by: The Bolvine Gigolo! on February 16, 2009, 08:56:45 PM
I just got an Email from Marilyn from windvest, there new shields will be ready in two weeks. She didn't have a price in the email, I sure like the looks there seems to be a real nice recurve.

They have to get rid of the mounting slots. I hope the realize the SERG winshields fit different. I like the larger recurve.

I'm going to bump this back up, I went to Jim's today he's a dealer now for windvest, I bought the smoked 12" with the recurve and rode it home around hundred miles. It sells for 159.00 less the 10% you get from Jim. I'll post some pic's tomorrow, it is a great shield very thick plastic , Ok! I'm 5'10" with a 32 inseam very little wind noise. :2vrolijk_21:

Had a Windvest on my Deuce and loved it, got the 12" Klockwerks on the SERG.  Windvest usually has a display at Laughlin, will have to check it out there.

Wimdvest makes a good product, we have one on Melanie's bike. Right around the corner here in Campbell. I would have got it from JIM but he DOESN'T LIST WHO HE IS A DEALER FOR.  No new chrome while you were at Jims? No Pics of the shield?

Don, what for a measurement do you have pulling a vertical line?  I ask as I have seen measurements posted for the KW and I wanted to compare them. I couldn't use the KW as it leans to far back and doesn't have enough vertical rise for me.

Klock Works
Windvest
Clearview

Who is the resident computer wiz that can post pics of each of these to show their actual height (not listed) along with pricing and options? A full on comparison between the four........

Let's see, you're 5'10" and you bought the 12". Do you look through or over it? Also, please let us know if you ever get a BSR and her impressions. This one looks like a winner for me w a good price as well. Thanks much.

Ditto, the Windvest looks really good. I am also curious if you are looking over or through the windshield. I think the Corbin seat positions you forward about 1 inch which I expect would make it easier to see over the top of the Windvest with the 12" height. I will have to measure my Cee Bailey 10" to see the actual height above the gauges, with the lean angle it might be comparable. The 12" Cee Bailey was too tall for me and the 10" was good and I am 5'10" also. I do like the look of the Windvest with the recurve better than the Cee Bailey.

Screamin,
I see over it quite well, and if I had too with the light smoke I can see thru it also, now for the BSR I don't know if I can get Soozie on the back, but will try this weekend, and let you know.

Just to confirm, you bought the 12" Smoke and it measures 10 1/2"? I have a Clearview sport and it is just to short at 9". I am thinking the Windvest 12" will work great. What are your toughts.

The windwest recurve seems to be more recurved than the Clearview , is that correct ?

The 2009 SERG windshield is different and has a unique trim piece (gasket), but can be used on 1998+ models if you also use the new trim piece. It's strange that the wind deflectors are interchangeable between 1998-2009 models but windshields are not.  :2vrolijk_21:

Bill,
Not sure but it works for me, I do like the recurve it is alot better then the clearview, I think thats why you can get by with a little shorter shield.

It's the gun smoke, Thats what Jim had in stock. and yes it has alot bigger recurve, I have a clearview that I used to have on the 05 SEEG, and there's a bigger difference in the too!

It sounds like the windvest outperforms both CB and CV and of course the KW (talking about the RG models).

Anybody know where the least expensive place to order one would be or is this an item that must be purchased directly from windvest?

Does anyone know what the difference is between Windvest Gunsmoke and their Dark Smoke?  I am currently running a Clearview sport on my Road Glide and it just is not tall enough so I am going to try the 12 inch Windvest, but would like to know the difference between the two smoke colors.  Thanks in advance for the help.

gun smoke is " grey-smoke " , looks darker than dark smoke ( which is a touch of brown ) , so they explained to me .

I ordered the 12" gunsmoke. it will be here this Thursday. I'll be needing it for the trip to E.S. I'll post some pics when it's on the scoot. I have the Cee Bailey 15" on now. BSR hates it. She tells me she gets all the wind in her face. I'm hoping the Windvest cures all of this....................Fuzz

Try the Kuryakyn, It beats out all others (CB,CV,KW) and looks the best IMO.  You can also clean all the way down behind it because of the bubble in the center.  It rises 14" and measures 20" from the center screw back.

Sorry , but windvest wrote me this :
Hello Klaus,

Thank you for your interest in WindVest Motorcycle Products.
Yes the Road Glide screens fit the CVO’s as well.
The Dark Smoke has a bronze tint to it and the Gun Smoke has a grey tint and is actually darker than the dark smoke.
Do do not currently have black for the Road Glides and I’m not sure if that is something we will be doing.
Please let me know if you have any other questions
Have a good day!

Can someone update on what comes with the Windvest shields?  Does it come with the foam seals attached to the shield (like the clearview) and does it come with well nuts?  Thanks in advance for the help.
Title: Re: Windvest Shields for our Road Glides!
Post by: Highjagger on May 04, 2009, 01:13:48 PM
Only the shield , nothin else , Jim added the wellnuts , because i ordered them .
The package and the shield was ok , the fitting is not so good as the CeeBaileys , left and right from the center-screw is a small gap between fairing and screen , i used the stock SERG-gasket , but it`s not perfect fitting .
The look is not a hype but i guess that i can live with it on tours and with BSR .
the buffetting is not scrolled down to sero , it`s still at the level round the eyes , nut no flys or bienes in the face , they get pushed up by the shield-wind .
the faster you ride the better it works , at 120mph with open face helmet ( about 190km/h ) you get a pressure from behind at the head ( but not from the front ) .
This is my first impression about the first 50 miles with this shield , i think it`s a keeper because of average good function and the look does not hurt me too much .

And this
HJ, Now that you have ridden with the CB and WV summerize the differences for me, the CB knocks my helmet around at 70 mph the WV is shorter do you get turbulance around your ears with it at road speeds.
Title: Re: Windvest Shields for our Road Glides!
Post by: Highjagger on May 04, 2009, 04:50:35 PM
I only have made about 50 miles solo ride , it feels that the WV causes less turbulences than the CB  .
But you have definitely mor wind against and around your eyes .
The helmet is not shaking with the WV .
And the wind pressure lows down when you ride faster till you get it from the back to your helmet ( from behind ) .
I think that the WV is rideable , the CB wasn`t rideable for me ( couldn`t stand the turbulences ) .
I will see at the weekend after a two up tour about 1K kilometers .
But i ordered also the CV 9" sport which will be here soon ( i hope in one week after the tour ).
When the CV will push up the flies and the bees then i think that the better look of the CV will be the winner .
( Because a real perfect functional shield would look sooooo bad that you would not put it on theis awesome scooter )
The stock deflector is still my favourite because of the hot rod look , i only can ride with a full face helmet with the stock deflector , but the look is worth it .

I received my two Wind vests today. Both are 12", one is a Gun Smoke and the other is a Dark Smoke.

This is the model #1240 Gun Smoke
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z238/mlcorrell/2001%20Screamin%20Eagle%20Road%20Glide/709.jpg)

This is the model #1220 Dark Smoke
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z238/mlcorrell/2001%20Screamin%20Eagle%20Road%20Glide/710.jpg)

Here they are side by side.

The Gun Smoke is black/grey in color. The Dark Smoke has a bronze(ish) tint to it. You can be the judge of which one is darker. Without a light meter I wouldn't call it.

My current custom cut Slip Streamer measures in at roughly 11 1/2". For me this is about a 1/2" to tall.

For me I had troubles with my flip up screen coming in contact with some of the windshields I have tried. The Windvest has the clearance needed!   :2vrolijk_21:

The Wind Vest measures in at 10 1/2". A little shy of my target 11" however the Aero Lip may offset the height difference.

@ Puzzled ,
your old shield looks hot .
 What is it ?

You mounted the WV without the SERG-gasket , what`s the fitting ?
What gasket do you use ( or what is it ) ?
Or is it just a kind of rubber-edge-protection ?

My old shield is a Slipstreamer that I cut with a Roto-Zip tool. The vinyl was my idea and I had my bud who owns the local sign shop cut it out for me and I applied it.

There is what looks like foam weather stripping attached to my fairing (small amount). I bolted the new shield right in place of the old one. The piece on the bottom is the stock rubber molding that my bike came with. It prevents the shield from rubbing the fairing and helps cover any gaps between the windshield and fairing. :)

ok guys been trying to keep up with the posts. Picked up the orange bike last week. We put a clear KW on it and its not very good. Looks ok but above 50mph it beats the crap out of me and can't hear the radio. I'm 6'2" but only a 31" inseam. Is the windvest going to help?

I'm lucky enough I've got a few months to let everyone else sort it out before I jump in. I pick up my bike Friday, but only get to ride it for a week, then it goes into storage for a few months... hopefully by then there will be somewhat of a consensus... lol

I put on the Klock Werks smoked ... I'm 6' 4" and it cuts very well for me.  I get some helmet slap above 65 mi/hr but much better than my old short shield.  I recomend the KW and it looks great too.

IMHO that shield has too much going on. I guess for me, it may lean heavier towards the function side (though if it ineffective above 65, then it isn't even that effective), but it takes away from the clean lines of the bike. Just my 2¢... YMMV

Update** Windvest isn't sending out any more shields for CVO Roadglides stating that there is a fitment issue that they are correcting.. Windvest claims the update should be completed soon..

Damn thing ,always the same bullshi... ,
before ordering i asked them about the perfect fitting and they wrote to me that it will fit .
Now they received complaints and checked it again .
Why don`t they do this before promising such things to us .

My 12" Windvest that I bought from HD-Dude works pretty good. I am 5'10", look over the top, about the same relationship as my SEEG was with the middle HD Shield on. The Klockwerks 12 did nothing but look nice, otherwise it was less effective than the oe air deflector. I like the Windvest, it fits fine with the stock Road Glide Mldg. Would be nice if it fit the new SERG Lower mldg, otherwise no problem.

I just got back from 1600 miles behind my 12" WV. I don't have any serious complaints. A little taller would be nice. As I said in an earlier post I should have went with a clear windshield, I should have! I rode in four plus hours of rain today and the tinted shield was a bit tough to hide behind and try to look through.

I agree , the WV 12" works with 6.1 and signature seat too , a little taller would kill the acceptable look but would mean better function , the fitting could be better , i will keep this for tours and two-up-rides , I`ll try the CV-gasket when the CV sport will be here this week ( i hope ) , this will become my solo-cafe-racer-shield ( i hope )

Has anybody purchased the 10" WindVest yet? I am interested in the measurement above the gauges. It looks to me like the 12" clear would be perfect for fall/winter/spring and the 10" Gun Smoke might be nice for the summer months.

OMG my head hurts.

Thanks for the great input guys. I have been following the threads to see what is the best replacement for me(I am 5'9") but I am completely baffled as to which one to go with. I think any recurve windshield will cause more turbulence--right or wrong??????????
But most of the regular ones are butt ugly. I am seriously thinking that a taller OEM one is the way to go but I would like it blacked out like the one that came with the bike. Does anyone know if this exists.

Rob

Have the 12" Windvest, as mentioned earlier. Rode yesterday, took surface road (65 MPH speed limit) to try and avoid love bugs. I was wrong on the love bug deal, hit about a million. Windvest worked great, had about 3 or 4 on top of my helmet, rest were stopped by the windshield.
Good deal. AND 150 Watt Hawg Wired Amp w/CX504's is outstanding. Volume to waste at 80.

I tried the tallest WV winshield. I put it on the night before I left for Eureka Springs. All I can tell you that if your over 6' don't buy this shield. It was totally useless for me. At highway speeds I had to wear ear plugs because the buffeting was really bad. Even without the earplugs I could not hear the stereo above 50 mph. If anyone is interested in buying from me , give me a pm and we'll work it out. I should have known better. Anyway I just bought a Clearview GT-XX large. I'm 6-4" 32" inseam. So that means I have a long back. So anyone under 6' this WV shield might work out for them.......Fuzz

I've only seen pictures. I've got the KW on mine. Its clear and at 50  or less its ok. But at 65-70 I think I would be better without it. At 6'2'' and 31" inseam I know about the long back issue. I was hoping the Kury screen might work for  me. It sounds like the Wind Vest is a bust as well??

Try the Kuryakyn, It beats out all others (CB,CV,KW) and looks the best IMO.  You can also clean all the way down behind it because of the bubble in the center.  It rises 14" and measures 20" from the center screw back.

I am getting mad!!! the stock shield is crap! I already bought two shields, a cv gt medium and a cb 14''. I am 6.1''. both are still producing bad and strong low frequencies you rather feel than hear! getting pain in the...Then I started an experiment: without any shield: great!!! none of these bad vibrations!! the cb is just good with two persons on the bike.
I think I'm gona buy the third shiled: an kuryakin and I will shorten my stock to the minimum!?!
what are you thinking of this? best greetings from switzerland!

No not yet, but I'm cosidering it after seeing the pic. It seems like its low over the dash and comes up near the rider and looks great. I'm not too impressed with my CB and understand the dynamics a little better now to see how this might be the one that works. Doc

Wow, I have a deposit on a 2010 cvo and I'm starting to question my desire for a SERGU as "THE ONE" I have to have. Can't  remember hearing  about so many problems with shields for glides...... Maybe there just weren't as many of us riding the roadglides till they became SEs again. I test drove a RG a couple weeks ago and the ride was great and i didn't notice the wind being a problem. Course it had the tall factory shield on it, and I didn't even turn the factory stero on. I do remember feeling like I was on a rail going through a turn on the freeway it was so smooth with no vibrations. At that point I was sure I wanted a SERGU.....now I'm having second thoughts. I know I love my home made SESG. So here we go decissions, decissions...... :nixweiss: :confused5:.... Jon

Forget any issues with the shield...

Get the bike you want....

Figure out what saddle will fit you, one that rides the long haul in comfort...

Then, and only then, take the appropriate measurement as specified by Clearview...

And.. order a clearview recurved shield, with the height as suggested by their reccommented measurements. ..

You will be happy...
