Title: RoadGlide seat question
Post by: DAW on July 05, 2009, 07:05:25 PM
Just got done with my first long trip with the 2009 SERG, after about 150 miles my back side started getting pretty sore "pressure points I guess". I have been riding Dyna's so was hoping the new road bike would be better. I am 6 ft and 165# which might not help. a lot of guys had good luck with Harley's Road Zeppelin Air Adjustable seat, I don't like the look but for them 450 mile days it would be nice. I see they don't offer them for the 2009 year, does anyone think they might?? Does anyone have a good experience with a touring seat?

Anything beside Corbin, ANYthing, and apparently they are going under due to economy & poor product support, which would mean a product that is subpar to begain with and no warranty.
Then again maybe not.

+ 1 on the Corbin Solo.....Had a Mustang on my FLHR and I liked it.  Have the Corbin on the SERG, and to my butt & riding style, it is more comforatable, and looks better on the SERG than the Mustang.  As for Corbin customer service, no complaints from me.  Ordered both the seat, pillion, and back rests and they provided nice service.  As for them going out out business, do not think so.

I would be interested in seeing what evidence leads you to believe that.

Buddy who lives in Daytona said the store there is basically empty and he read online, Bikernet.com I believe, that they had filed bankruptcy.  Not a good sign, they lost a major fortune when they screwed the public on the battery car line, now the seat company is in trouble. I hate to see any company go out of business due to jobs lost, but they suck as a company, in my opinion so only thing I hate is hard working people loose there jobs, Corbin can starve for all I care.

The following is posted at Bikernet News.  Word of the business being for sale and property listed has been common for awhile now.  Toward the bottom of the page at this link: http://www.bikernet.com/news/newsarch.asp?Article=050709-2

Seat King Mike Corbin Set To Retire Lists Manufacturing Company For Sale-- motorcycle seats for 42 years, but now he’s ready to call it quits. Corbin, founder of Corbin-Pacific, one of the leading developers and manufacturers of motorcycle seats and accessories, has put the company up for sale. The details are presented here. The second part of this report includes information from a lengthy conversation I had with Corbin about how he built the company, how he sees changes in the marketing of motorcycle products, and what he plans to do in retirement.

After designing and building some of the world’s most popular motorcycle seats for more than four decades, Mike Corbin has had enough. He’s ready to retire, and he wants to sell his company, Corbin-Pacific, Inc., including its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Hollister, Calif., and its retailing facility in Daytona Beach, Fla.

He’s not going to go away entirely, though. He’s available to work with the new owner for up to two years to ensure a successful transition.

He’s listed the company with an LA sales and acquisitions firm, Business Team. Jeff Beland, executive vice president, is the contact, if you’re interested. He can be reached at (310) 539-8300 or jbeland@business-team.com.

I spoke with Mike and Jeff this week and here’s a summary of the selling information:

Corbin Pacific, Inc. It’s listed at $11.5 million. The company develops, manufactures and markets a wide line of custom motorcycle seats and accessories. Mike Corbin founded the company and has been its resident design genius for 42 years. He holds 82 patents and has developed everything from custom leather motorcycle seats and backrests to apparel and highly stylized fiberglass fairings, bags and other accessories.

The company’s products are designed specifically for individual models of motorcycles and scooters. Corbin also produces products for the unique three-wheel BRP Spyder roadster.

Corbin maintains an inventory of more than 1,500 fiberglass seat molds for every major brand and model in street and off-road categories.

In an unusual move for this industry, Corbin has eliminated all sales to distributors and now sells directly to dealers and consumers, largely through the Corbin website.

The company generated revenues of $14.6 million in 2007 and $14.7 million last year, almost all of it through the company’s Internet website. The company lost money the last two years, but has returned to profitability this year, according to management.

Hollister, Calif., Property. It’s listed at $7.2 million. This modern 82,000 sq. ft. facility houses the company’s headquarters and main manufacturing operation; it’s where all Corbin seats and accessories are produced. Built in 1997, the building includes a restaurant, customization service area, customized wiring and an OSHA Certified work area. There’s also a showroom that presents the history of Corbin and the many products he’s invented and produced.

Ormond, Fla., Property. It’s listed at $3.2 million. The Ormond showroom is an 11,000 sq ft building designed to handle sales, marketing and product installation. The classy building serves as a showcase of Corbin products for East Coast riders. The showroom is located on Main Street in Daytona Beach, which hosts two motorcycle rallies annually and draws more than 200,000 motorcyclists.

That’s it for the sales information. Next time, I’ll write about my conversation with Mike that will touch on his future plans, his unusual marketing approach, and a bit of the history of the company and the man.

With as many people that have complained about Corbin's service and other problems with the company the last two or three years I too have been on of the lucky ones.  Have the saddles and love what they do, how they look and how they ride.  No one know yet how it'll all play out.  Maybe a new owner rights the ship and they just keep on keeping on.

DAW,  yes the CVO Ultra comes with a heated hammock seat.   I put a regular hammock on my roadglide.  It raises the seat height at least an inch and moves you forward about an inch also (which is good if you have a passenger, gives them a little more room).  I like the seat so far, it does a good job of smoothing out most bumps.

I had the same issue on my first long distance trip with the wife.  After about 150 miles our butts hurt bad!  Stopped at a dealer and they had a Sundowner in stock (PN 52093-08 I think).  Put that on and all was better.  Wife was happy again!    The hammock sounds good too!

Here's the link for the HD Hammock Seat:
http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448772959&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374309043229&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374309043229&bmUID=1246992059455&bmLocale=en_US

P/N 53051-09   List $500, about $400 at Chicago HD or Zanotti HD.  I believe the CVO Ultra heated version had a list of around $900.   Here's a picture of the hammock on my bike.

Great pics, thanks.  The stock ultra seat looks decent.  Large, but decent.  Anyone put one of these on their SERG yet?

Any seat that Eglidegoodies sells is someone else's brand that they are remarketing. Try Saddleman, Mustang, Corbin etc. Those are there seats they are selling and you can get discounts from a lot of places on the brand seats, but not from Eglidegoodies. Also they do not offer the best service available. My own experience talking here.

I put a Hammock on my 09 SERG and I really like it. It does raise you up at least and inch which I don't really like so I'm probably going to lower the back end an inch.

Comfortable on long trips; a world of difference from the stock seat.

The standard 09' Road Glide seat could make a good touring seat.
Just swap it out for the long . . . rides.
I think they are priced under $200.

I thought the stock 09 SERG seat was comfortable, I just wanted a backrest and the cost of that made me go to an aftermarket seat.

Corbin was my choice - had one for 8 years on my '00 and wife & I both loved it so did it again on the '09.  Made a nice drive down to Hollister this summer to have it fit up, don't have to do it there but nice to customize on the spot.  I know some have "issues" with Corbin but I never have.   Lots of choices for you Dow!

We put the Hammock seat on our bike and although it's cush and comfy, it seems to make your britches sweat more.
Yes,  I do live in Houston Texas, where you sweat just looking out the window, but I didn't seem to have the same issues with the stock seat.
It says it's vinyl/leather and I'm wondering if the vinyl is just not absorbing the moisture.  It looks like I wet my pants everywhere I go.
I found a small black towel I was able to secure across the seat and am hoping for an early fall.
The HD dealership traded out my stock seat with the Hammock and kept the stock seat, ( I'm sure to send in for warranty purposes), but I sure wish I
had it back so I could switch back and forth.
