Title: My CVO is no more.........
Post by: grinner on November 18, 2009, 10:31:48 AM
On 11-4-09, at about 6:30pm eastern, I t-boned a Nissan in north Georgia at about 50mph.  I was coming into an intersection, geared down and saw everything was clear.  As soon as I committed to going through, the Nissan turned right in front on me - no options other than impact.  My four month old CVO SESG was completely totaled.  I flew about 85 feet in the air after impact, and skidded another 20-30 feet after landing.  Lifeflighted me to Atlanta trauma where I stayed in ICU and CCU for 10 days.  Got back home on Friday night 11-13.  Broke (or fractured) everything on my left side (scapula, collarbone, left arm, left hand, 9 ribs, pelvis, left leg, left ankle).  Thank God I am a rightee so able to still do a lot!!  Collapsed both lungs, but no neck/back trauma, no internal issues, little impact rash on my chin and right knee.

Very thankful to be alive and able to recover in time.  Had all my leathers on, 3/4 helmet too, and was told point blank that my gear definitely kept me from greater harm.  Thanks to all my buds for their immediate and continued support, my thanks to God for reaching down and saving me, and safe rides to everyone!

In my best Terminator voice - "I'll be back!"

Best of luck on a speedy recovery.

Very sorry to read of the accident and all the injuries.  Great to read you're out of the hospital and on the mend.

What's the prognosis for recovery?  And any more surgeries ahead to finish putting pieces back together or remove new bits holding them together now?

It was a young girl in an 09 Nissan, and I'm pretty sure she was on her cell phone at the time.  Just found out I totaled her car.

Short-term I will be in a wheelchair until mid-January.  Long-term they are concerned about the ankle and the arm/wrist.  Can't foot shift if ankle doesn't recover so you can bet your a## I'll be following all orders to heal.

You guys and gals are FANTASTIC - thanks for all the responses and encouragement!

Grinner,
Sorry to hear about the accident and the dumb-a$$ bimbo turning in front of you. :(  But very glad to hear that you're still around to talk about it.  I was in the same position as you and I got called three days after I got out of the hospital by the officer that investigated the accident, and he told me, I know this doesn't make your pain any less, but if it's any comfort, you totaled the guys pickup when he hit you.  It didn't ease the pain any, or bring back my bike, but it did bring a small painful smile to my face... 8)

Heal quick bro so you can get back in the wind...

On Oct 26th this year in Ontario they made it illegal to use a cell phone without handsfree device. Minimum fine is $500, worse if it is the cause of an accident and God forbid if someone is killed, the Crown Attorney has the right in certain cases to move charges from vehicular manslaughter to criminally negligent homicide.

Grinner, very sorry to hear about you being cut off. Wow it gave me the willie's thinking about it. That's the scenario I get the sweats over! You seem to have a solid grip on things... so kuddo's to you dude!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Lack of attention when driving a cage, makes that cage a weapon, and is CLEARLY NEGLIGENCE and STUPIDITY, but not a simple "accident" Sorry Mark, but w'ell NEVER agree on the definition of an accident. I really don't believe in them at all. We are all accountable for our actions, and if we were paying attention and were careful, only product failures could be considred accidents. Not driver carelessness or lack of attention!!! >:( >:(

Man, I'm very sorry to hear they are calling this a accident because it's not. This dumb little bitch on her cel phone has caused you many days and months of pain and not being able to do the things you need to do, like taking care of your family. Thank GOD that your here with us to tell us that your getting better and over time will heal up. I to laid my Fatboy down last year because of a dumb ass wanted to pull in front of the car I was behind and I had two choices, hit the rear of the car or laid it down. I had four surgeries and I'm still doing PT twice a week and it's Been over a year ago. So don't be in a big ass hurry and rush your body. Listen to the doc's, you will be back soon. Take care PM if you want to talk.

Cell phones were not common when I T-boned 24 years ago..I didn't launch however, I crunched.

My back and shoulders blew the back window out of a Pontiac Grand Am ..Just another Ahole Dumb Assed Muther Pluckka.  (AHDAMF)

Dont forget to take your drugs...have your people subpoena the cell phone records and instill fear into the insurance company.

Hoist! :coolblue:

Not sure what our disagreement was, I don't believe most "accidents" are accidents either. That's why I said "I won't call it an accident." If someone wasn't paying attention and caused the crash, then it wasn't an accident. Even if they were paying attention and just did something stupid, it is still a crash and not an accident. A biker could cause a crash by not having their head in the game just as easily as a cage. It's just that there are more cages out there, it is much easier to be doing other things while driving a car than a bike (I'm not excusing it, doesn't make it right, it's just easier), bikes get lost in blind spots easier than cages and not many teen-agers ride motorcycles (probably a good thing).

Grinner;

Sorry to hear about your wreck. In hopes it offers some encouragement during a difficult time;

2 fractured backs, multiple broken hands, wrists, arms, legs and both heels/feet, nose, shoulder, and scull bolted back together with plates and screws....

You can overcome anything, just keep fighting all the way to getting back in the saddle...

Don't try to be macho and only take your meds when it really hurts, take them when needed as it actually promotes healing...

God' speed recovering and you still have the most important ride; Life!

Late reply be me, sorry for your pain, many of us can feel that for/with you, but that don't make it hurt less.

I know this is gonna rub some folks wrong, and for that I say "hey, we all make our own choices and what works best for us". Not passing judgement, cars are like colors  and models of Harley's, we all have different likes and dislikes, but for me, the WORST thing that could happen is getting hit by a car that came off a boat. Top that off with some SOB on a cell phone and it gets no worse. I have never been down from an impact, but a fence, a dog, a coon and one bag of trash have taken me to the ground before.  Get well soon and let us know what becomes of the overall mess that it is., (Itotally sit on the same side of the bar as Hoist)  And I agree with MANY of the other guys here..........  the bike is just a thing, replaceable, while you are not.   Hope the long term recovery goes well..................

Getting better every day.  Got all the stitches/staples out, ortho and trauma docs say I'm healing good.  Eating good and getting out of the house some too.  Sleep is still a chore, been sleeping in my recliner now for over a week.  Can't lay flat yet due to ribs and shoulder, but I'll get there.  Got fed up with this slowa@@ wheelchair last week - it's in the shop getting a 96 installed, race tuned, and some decent pipes on it........

Continued thanks for all your emails and support. :bandana:

Hey Grinner/TBar......good to hear that you're on the mend.  Keep us posted on your progress and thanks for all your posts sharing your unfortunate experience (crash).  I think it helps all of us to be reminded on a pretty regular basis how much crashing sucks.  I'm fed up with all cell phone use by drivers including 'hands free' as I think the concentration factor is the true menace, not the manipulation.  I've personally quit even answering my phone even tho I've got all controls/spkrs/etc. built into the car.  You can always wait to pull over and return the call.  Beats causing a crash.  Keep on keeping on and heal fast!  :2vrolijk_21: spyder

Hey Spyder you are so right about cel phones, Karen and I was on the Expressway not long ago when a young girl was texting and kept coming into our lane. Karen waved at her twice and she never even seen her.

I'm generally a live and let live kind of guy, but I waited a long time to get that scoot, put a lot of time and $$ into setting it up my way, lost it in the blink of her eye, got a long way to go to convince my wife to ride with me again, and the more I recover the more pissed I get.  She (Miss Cage just didn't see me) called me right after it happened when I was in the hospital and apologized, but I want her to see the injury/scars and fully understand how bad she hurt me, my wife, my family, and my scoot....

I feel a crusade coming over me........... :soapbox:

Title: Re: My CVO is no more.....12-29 UPDATE
Post by: grinner on December 29, 2009, 12:13:09 PM
Got back from the Ortho Docs last Wednesday so here's the latest scoop.....

Doc says for a 51 year old I am mending extremely well.  All bones are showing good improvement except for the arm and leg (both had rebuild surgeries and are still recovering).  He did take the hard cast off the leg with strict instructions for no weight bearing for another 6 weeks so I'll still be in the chair but at least now I can shower and SCRATCH MY LEG!!!!  When the nurse took the old cast off, she found a quarter, some pieces of velcro, a chop stick, and two popsickle sticks down there - I just shrugged and pled the fifth (should have blamed the wife)....  Sleeping in the bed for the fifth day in a row now - no more recliner nights.  Hard to turn over with the ribs and pelvis issues, but forcing myself to stay put and deal with it.  Laying on my back at night I can practice shifting with the foot and clutching with the hand so already got my PT priorities straight.  They set up real PT for the arm so will be making progress soon in regaining better movement.  Not taking any more pain meds now and started driving again too.  Appetite is extreme, eating good just not as much as before - weight is 194 (down from about 220 before the crash).  Gotten lean and mean and got rid of the dickie-do disease I've had for at least 20 years (you know, when your stomach sticks out further than your dickie-do...) thanks to the "crash" diet I was on.

Again, many thanks to all those who have and continue to wish me well.  Enjoy life to the fullest, love as deeply as you can, and most of all keep the shiny side up!

Title: Re: My CVO is no more......... GOT NEW SCOOT!!
Post by: grinner on January 17, 2010, 09:17:13 AM
Just took delivery of my new scoot on Friday.  Got a 2010 SEUC Ultra Glide (riptide blue/titanium) with everything on it.

Docs are fairly optimistic that the foot is healing well and I should be ready to ride May 1.  Started PT on my hand/arm last week - I think the PT tech is kin to Nurse Ratchet from One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest....  I ain't hating, just saying.  Hoarded all my pain pills and I can see I will need them taking PT.  First session was good, she was able to get a little more flexibility in my fingers.  Working on strength later.  Will start foot/ankle PT first week of February but Doc gave me some exercises to do in the meantime and I feel like I'm way ahead of the curve.....

If you guys need me for anything I'll be in the garage for the next three months polishing my new bike!

On top of the world,

Grinner/TBAR

Now don't be worrying about your new scoot. I am postive that there are several guys here that will be more than happy to make sure the battery doesn't run down. Heck we may just ride it on down to Bike Week for you.

That's what "Buds" are for.

Glad to hear you are doing much better.

Be sure to take pictures of your therapy sessions and send them along to the chit head who hit you. It's important that they know you are thinking about them each and every day.

I think this will be my last "healing" update.   Ortho Docs released me last Wednesday from all restrictions.  Injured leg is at 74% of non-injured leg and the Doc was very pleased - so much so that he didn't even order PT for my leg.  The next day I took my wife's Honda 750 for a spin around the neighborhood just to test myself.  No problems at all - hand was strong on the clutch and leg was able to support bike.  SO......Friday morning I fired my new SEUC and rode it down to the Cartersville HD dealership.  Went right back through the intersection where I crashed and didn't give it a second thought.  Visited the HD shop for a while until it started snowing pretty good, then fired that mother up and headed home.  First time I had ever ridden in snow and it was spectacular!  After church Sunday one of my buds called and we went on about a 75 mile cruise - again no issues with strength or navigation.

Crashed Nov. 4, 2009, and rode again on Feb. 11, 2010, exactly 98 days later.  If that ain't a miracle I don't know what is.  Thank You Jesus, family, and friends for bringing me back!

Great ending to a bad start.  As a rider and physician I see it from both ends of the spectrum.  Physicians can only do so much but it is the human spirit that then takes over.  Always be the one who looks a half glass of water as half full rather than half empty.  Have fun.

We are all very glad you are back and that you have the ability to continue to ride.  It could have come out worse as you well know. I am hoping you take it upon yourself to continue work theweak parts with the goal of getting as close as you can to 100%

Also I am hoping periodically you'll post up what's happening to the person who hit you. I personally would like to see them accept responsibility for what they did.

Good Luck and please stay off of the snow and black ice... You don't need to flirt with fate and start rehab all over again.

Regards

Jerry

THIS IS THE DAY!

Got released from all Physical therapy today.  Pelvis is still giving me some fits, left arm getting better and less painful, got about 95% of motion back in my left shoulder!  But on the bright side I've got some really cool scars, some gnarly x-rays, and my wife says I have a cute limp........

Went outside last Saturday and decided it was time to try and hit a golf ball.  Prior to crash I carried a 5 handicap... first two I topped bigger than life, but 3 through 8 were long, solid, and had a bit of a fade at the end!  Will work on playing my guitar this weekend, but looks like this is a really happy ending to a pretty bad crash.  Bought a 2009 Fat Bob this past weekend to put on the lift and work on.  Big bore coming, nasty pipes, insane paint, NO WINDSHIELD.......

Life is good, and friends are even better!  Thanks a million - God Bless you all,   Grinner

First, the mystery of the changeling bike colors.  I bought the Riptide Blue when I was actually still in the hospital.  They delivered it a couple of days after I got home, but I had seen the Burnt Amber while interneting in the hospital and I love orange (drive an Orange Avalanche).  One day when I was at my local MoCo, I asked what it would take to trade out, they gave me a figure, and I went home on the Burnt Amber/Citrus that afternoon.  I am very happy I got it because it is exactly what I wanted - no doubts.  I love riding that scooter!

As for Miss Distracted, no jail, paid a $140 fine, no other legal woes....probably going to have a hard time getting insurance for a while.  My insurance paid off with no problems (Progressive is AWESOME!!!!) and will go after her to recover their loss.  I reached out to her Mother recently just to convey that I will be okay and hoped the daughter had learned a lesson.  Mother said Miss D now had a big bun in the oven (still only 18), and was going to be a cosmetologist.  Mother said how terrible the treatment was that her daughter had received at our local hospital after the crash (bumped her head) - not a word for me and my condition so I hung up and just shook my head.  I now yell at everyone I see on the phone when I am riding, and am thinking about a crusade........

But I have everything I need, God has given me back my strength, my health, and my LIFE, and I am ever thankful of this undeserved gift.

Grinner:

FWIW: You're a better man than I am. I would have to sue her civilly for the pain and suffering--etc and negligence.  Yea shes only 18 now but here insurance company is responsible for her cival liabilities too as are her parents if she was under age.

Now I would agree to be more forgiving if they even tried to give a damn but they don't and more than likely will do it all over again since she still has her cell phone.

Thank's for the update !!! ... I however would be seeing my local legal eagle, to collect for a little pain, but more importantly to make an example of careless driving... donate to a local charity but nail her ..... IMOP

I learned my insurance lesson after Katrina wiped us out on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2005 - we lost the house and all of our contents because of the technicial definition of a "flood" and got nothing from our insurance company (Farm Bureau).  So when I moved up here to Georgia I bought everything Progressive could sell me, including an auto/motorcycle umbrella uninsured/underinsured policy that would pay me in the event I was in a wreck and the other person either had no insurance or had minimum insurance coverage.  Progressive made good on the policy and will go after her/her parents/whoever in order to get their money back.  The policy wasn't very expensive, but sure came in handy when I needed it.  No issues from Progressive at all - they paid me promptly and in full.  Keeps me from having to try and take her to court, get some sort of judgement that I'll never see a dime on, and now I can move on.  My only issue is that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia refused to pay the lifeflight helicopter bill and I'm going to be sued by the helicopter company for $10,000.  BCBS just lost my personal business as well as all of my company business (175 employees) over this stupid issue.  I would have probably died without the helicopter ride, and BCBS refused to pay for that vital and necessary service!!  So long BCBS, hello Principal!

You have to hold these companies accountable, and the best way to do that is not give them your business or your hard-earned money if they don't keep their end of the bargain!
