Title: How to remove the battery without alarm going off?
Post by: Sinker on November 30, 2009, 09:39:06 PM
I have a 2009 FXSTSS3 and love everything but the alarm.  I have the bike in a storage space and went to remove the battery for the winter.  Why does the alarm go off when you are removing the battery?  How the hell do I get the battery out without the alarm going off?  I nearly went deaf in the small aluminum storage locker.

On a touring bike you have to pull the maxi fuse out while the ignition is on.  Could be the same for yours.

Yep,......

Have fob near bike
Turn ignition ON
Pull Maxi fuse
Turn bike off
remove battery

To expand on this, there is a reason for designing the system this way.  If a thief could defeat the alarm by just disconnecting the battery, the alarm would be pretty much useless around anyone with that knowledge.  By forcing you to have the ignition on to disable the system, there is at least the assumption that an authorized person with the ignition key and fob is the one disconnecting the battery.

I just turned it on and then off, that silenced the dang thing on my 07SG. Still went off with battery disconnected since the siren unit has its own (small)battery in it, so I was told by dealer.     Hated this so much I almost removed the siren........

On my 08 FXSTSSE2 you have the fob nearby, turn the ignition to ON and then remove the battery cables.  Don't ask me how I know.

HD-Dude is correct. I had the same thing happen when I went to install my stereo. I went into the manual and found these steps and it worked fine.
If you don't that Dam siren will just about def-en you!!!!!  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for all the responses.  Just one more question:  which fuse is the Maxi fuse?

The largest one in or near the fuse box.  A 40 amp.  You will know it when you see it (about 1 1/4" accross).

There is another way to do it but is a little more involved. If you can get to the actual alarm then just take the little nine volt battery out of the siren and then it has no power. Only problem, it is in the same compartment as the ECM and if you have a Power commander you know how much of a pain it is to get there.

I should have read this post prior to disconnecting my battery to connect up a Hogtunes Hog Pod. After I set off the alarm, I did a quick search on this site and found out I should have pulled the maxi fuse prior to disconnecting the battery.

I have a follow-up question, once the alarm is engaged, how do you disengage the alarm?

A person could go deaf or crazy while waiting for about 5 minutes for the alarm to disengage itself.

Have the Fob near the bike and turn on the ignition then turn it off. This should reset the alarm.  :2vrolijk_21:
