I hope this the appropriate place for this. How many of you have been exposed to agent orange? I just filed for compensation at the VFW office in Providence RI. The Service Officer that helped me indicated that Uncle Sam will probably reject my claim because of missing documents. Then I can file an appeal. Who else has been thru this process? kb

I can't be the only one here that spent time in Viet Nam.

I know there are many out there as my wife works at a VA and see's many affected vets from it every day. Good luck with your claim.

I had prostate cancer surgery last year. So far all test have come back negative. I just pray it stays like that. kb

I hope you get better, never was in the service, worked for a company that built fighter plane parts in high school and throughout the conflict, therefore was deferred. Lost a lot of friends and have a hard time wondering what if. Sorry for the agent orange, a guy I work with was there and has had a kidney transplant and other major issues, tells us stories of being drenched with it and commanding officers telling them it would not bother them.

Nope. You're not. Just keep at it as much progress has been made in the area of A.Orange claims so I hear. I've never had to make any claims but have buddys that have and it's much easier now than for many years. spyder

My brother-n-law (sister's husband) got leukemia. He was in Vietnam and has been treated in the local VA hospital. I heard that he is going to be compensated ...I can give you his phone number and contact him if you want. Let me know.

A friend of mine that adopted child from Vietnam told me that agent orange can be passed to future generations .... and it can be traced in a DNA screening....

You have already done the biggest and best thing you can when dealing with the VA, and that is, you went to the VFW to have them help. Sign all the papers you need to and sit back. It has always been an uphill battle with the VA for me and the VFW has helped me much in the past. The DAV has also helped me much in the past as well. The VA is an arm of the government and they have a budget to deal with so they play the numbers more than anyone that attends a Gamblers Anonymous meetings.
Hang in there, the the process is slow by purpose, the fact is, many will drop their request for compensation, just don't be one of them. It's very sad to say, but the VA is betting that you will will drop by the way side as well, don't let them win.
Much has been gained recently concerning records. If the VFW is a local chapter, you may do better to deal with your VFW State Rep that usually has an office at a Federal Building. In NH it's at the same building that the VA is at.

Chappy, I hope all is well with you. Thanks for support and advise. I intend to follow it everyway possible. Even the people at the DAV say it can be a long process. I just wish that I had applied for benefits years ago. I guess that you need to start somewhere. God bless you my thoughts and prayers are with you. kb

In 1968 to 1969 I was in Viet Nam and was exposed to Agent Orange. The VA used to resist the idea of Agent Orange related claims, but in my experience now ( over the last 3 years) looks for connections and helps you get coverage. I have diabetes and some other problems that the VA told me is the result of Agent Orange exposure. The VA has given me a 65% service connected disability rating, not just for Agent Orange exposure but also for some injuries received while on active duty.
I have seen some pamphlets at the VA regional hospital in Sioux Falls, SD that covers Agent Orange exposure and gives examples of conditions that are presumed to be the result of such exposure. I am sure that pamphlet is available at any VA regional hospital.
My experience is that the VA is on our side and will help get care for Agent Orange related conditions.

Today I received a notice that the VA grants me a 30% Special Monthly Compensation due to possible exposure to Agent Orange. it sure ain't much but it is a start. kb

I filed a claim in September for compensation after learning of studies that indicate exposure to agent orange may be a causative factor for developing diabetes mellitus (Type II diabetes) later in life. I provided a total of about 10 pages of documented evidence that I may have been exposed more than once between 1966 and 1968, and I tested positive for diabetes in 1999. They are still processing my claim.

Good to hear your starting to get help. I'm sure it's been a up hill battle for you the last year to get where your at today,but at least you got your feet wet. Keep the faith !! God bless our vets!! :2vrolijk_21:

Just don't give up. I think that they just hope you will get fed up and quit. Make it a mission . kb
