Title: Decision on trading my 09 SERG for an 11 FLTRUSE
Post by: newseultra07 on August 29, 2010, 11:34:36 AM
Well dealer had the Rio Red & Black Ember on floor. They wanted MSRP plus 4K. I said no way i would pay that. I've bought 3 CVO's from this dealership over the past 3-4 yrs. Anyways they said trade difference would be 18K. I said your crazy i wont do that. They came back and said 15K difference, i left & went home. On way home salesman calls & says they will do 13K trade difference. I put pencil to it and they are selling the 11 for MSRP plus freight & giving me 23,000 for my bike with only 2200 miles on it. I really don't like the red & black but would prefer the gray & black RG. They said they found some & would do a dealer trade to get it. Not real sure this is a good deal. I really wanted closer to 25K for my bike since its got low miles on it & in great condition. I may just keep mine & blow off this idea all together...I don't owe but around $22,000 for mine since i bought it a good price a year ago... Any suggestions..

Shop around... see if you can get a better deal (find a MSRP dealer)... if not go w/your gut feeling.

Most dealers in my area have them sold before getting them. This particular dealer will sell it at MSRP thou. Just my trade in is lower than i wanted...Going to work on them tomorrow for a better trade in..

I would look at a different way.

According to Kelly Blue Book, in my area, the trade-in value of a FLTRSE3 in good condition is worth $24,700.  With the low mileage, I would expect yours to be worth more.  So assuming they gave you what your FLTRSE3 was worth, they are still charging you close to $2,000 above MSRP.  They are simply hiding that fact by low balling your trade-in.

Unless the deal got a WHOLE lot sweeter I'd keep what you have. It's a better looking bike anyway. Get ya a matching TP and save a bunch of cash. JMHO

Yep think unless I got closer to 25-26k iam not going to be doing it. True on getting a tour pack. Would be lots cheaper in long run.

The 11 is essentially the same bike as the 09 only it has some gizmo's that didn't come on the 09serg.  The 11 also has the ugly pre-09 rear end without the LED stop/turn lights and extended clean fender/bags that came out on your 09.  Your 09 has a Waaaaay better paint job with the eagle to boot!  The wheels on the SERG are the best looking wheel the MoCo has ever fielded...the 11 comes with chromed 10SESG wheels with fugly roters.

The motors, frame, transmission, brakes, etc... are the same as well.

I'd keep the Grey Ghost, it's a one-year limited run knockout of a bike!

The 2011s coming out makes the 09 two model years old.  2200 miles.  This is a slightly different take on the question.  But....  at 1100 miles a year it's not ridden enough to justify either the new expense or replacement.

"But Daddy I just want it!"

We are in agreement but I must admit that I have that voice in my head too from time to time...

Just been really busy with work & its been hot as heck here thats why only has 2200 miles. I've had the bike since last October. Still not many miles for almost a year... I've decided to just keep the grey ghost & save lots of $$$$$$$$.

Dont trade a hot rod in for a "Old man bike"

Yeah, but it's the more comfortable of the two, will go just as fast, and has all the necessary whistles and bells that most of the 09 SERG folks tried to accomplish by spending thousands more.  The only thing they could have done to the 11s was added the LED rear fender and the extended bags....but I'm not going to let that stop me from getting one of those "Old man's bikes".   :2vrolijk_21:  I'll wave comfortably at you as we pass on the road.   :2vrolijk_21: ;)

If $$$ was not a limiting factor, I'd own both the FLTRUSE and the FLTRSE3. One for touring and one for banging 'round town and day trips. However, in my case $$$ is a limiting factor and so I've been more than happy with my decision to trade up from a '07 FLTR to my Slate/Black '11 FLTRUSE.

Regarding the original post.

As I have been stopping at various dealers along my road trip from Albuquerque, NM to Kalamazoo, MI, I have been checking out their stock of FLTRUSEs and asking prices. All so far have been asking MSRP plus Freight and Setup.  Other than the dealer who I purchased from in Santa Fe who asked for a $2k premium. After dealing on my trade, I believe I got close to the $2k back out of my trade. I didn't care for this approach but I guess I was motiviated to purchase. (Hmm.. I need to control these urges).

Also, regarding the value of the low mileage '09 FLTRSE3 - sales on eBay over the last month have been in the range of $26.5k to a high of about $29k. These were all very low mileage bikes (3.5k miles or less).

While it sounds like you have decided to hang on to the FLTRSE3 for now, if you did really want a new FLTRUSE, I'd recommend selling the bike on eBay first (soon before it gets any older) and they finding a dealer like Mann HD in Indiana or Perry HD in Michigan (both have Slate/Black in stock and will sell at MSRP, taxes lower in IN I believe).

Good luck,
Simon

I've decided just to keep my old Silver FLTRSE3 for now. I have it set up way i like it & don't feel like starting over on a new one.. Its still new with only 2300 miles on it... I've been looking at the ebay sales some just to see what they've been going for...

LOL!!!!!!! That is a way out of line price. I was offered 35k on my bike last month. It's real simple what do they want for the 2011 (but you have to ask why would you trade) and then what will they give you for yours? Not being a smart a?$)( but when they do that crazy 4k over msrp stuff it leaves them all the room to wiggle. Put it on ebay and see what you get especially with 2k miles
